The origins – Corpo de
Quadrilheiros

• First reference on police institutions –


1383, Quadrilheiros
• Function: ensure patrols the streets of
Lisbon and later the streets of Porto
Guarda real da Polícia

• After the 1755 earthquake and the


ineffectiveness of the (Quadrilheiros) in
defending the city against criminals force
the creation of a new police force, which
was titled after Guarda Real da Polícia.
• First professional police force

• The victory of liberalism in 1834


• "Guardas Municipais " of Lisbon on July 3,
1834, and of Porto on August 24 of 1835
• This movement imposed the administrative retire
ment of the Country which led
to the formation of the 18 districts of Portugal.

• The end of the monarchy and


the implementation of
Republic creates de provisional
Guardas Republicanas of
Lisbon and Porto while
preparing the organization of
the current Guarda Nacional
Repúblicana, that was formally
created on May 3 of 1911.

What is the
goal/mission?
• The PAF (Portuguese Air
Force) was created on the
1st of July of 1952.
However, its origins are
from 1912, when the army
and the navy started to
form their aviation;
• Its mission is to fully
cooperate in the military
defense of the Portuguese
Republic and its airspace
through air operation
missions;
The Famous – F-16
• This is (most likely) the most known aircraft of the PAF (Portuguese Air Force).
• This plane is known all over the world, and it appears in many films, for
example Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where this plane takes the main role.

• The F-16 made its first flight by portugal on 26 June of 2003.

• Portugal has 4 F-16 and each one costs around 63 million dollars.

The branch of the Portuguese


Armed Forces whose mission is to
cooperate, in an integrated manner,
in the military defence of Portugal,

• “Batalha Naval de Saltes”:
• A Portuguese squadron of 26
galleys and ships, with almost
10,000 men, was defeated off
Saltes by the Castilian squadron
of 17 galleys, which took
advantage of the dispersion of the
Portuguese ships. The naval battle
of Saltes was the heaviest
Portuguese naval defeat in its
entire history.

Curiosities of the
Portuguese Navy

• It is the oldest Navy in the world.

• The first battle of our Navy took place in


1128 and the last one took place in 1918,
a combat between a fishing ship
requisitioned by the Portuguese Navy
against several German ships.
