SUMMARIES FOR SEPTEMBER

Lauren
Continuing with fractions, we started this month with a recap of
what was taught last month. Additionally, we covered what a proper
fraction, improper fraction and mixed number is. Then, we started
adding and subtracting fractions; LCM included. We discussed
fractions with the same denominators and different denominators.
For fractions with different denominators, we used the method of
finding LCM first then making equivalent fractions. She is quizzed
every week on what was taught the previous week and this has been
helping her remember.

Xaiden
Continuing with fractions, we started this month with simplifying
fractions. Then, we took a break from fractions to do Prime
Factorization as this was a topic he did not understand in school. We
defined a prime number, composite number, factor and multiple. We
used the method of dividing numbers by their prime factors to find
the prime factorization of the number. This seemed to be easy for
him after a thorough explanation. We practiced a bit and the week
after, he was given a test where he got 100% (with a little help with
the wording for his definitions). We’ll be continuing with fractions
next month as he was given some worksheets to practice.
Louis
Louis and I started off this month with decimals. We were able to
cover adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. We
completed decimals with a worded problems worksheet which he
did great in. Lastly, we started the topic; Sets. This is a new topic for
him so starting from scratch we looked at what a Set is and the Set
symbols. We discussed the Universal Set, an empty set, etc. We
learned how to get the union and intersection of sets as well as
representing all of this on a Venn diagram. We also looked at a few
Sets worded questions and we’ll be continuing with this next month.

Zarah
Zarah and I mainly focused on some exam preparation topics and
questions. Ratio was the main topic we looked at. We ran through
how to find the ratio between two groups of objects, given the total
i.e. finding for one part and using that amount to find for each
individual group. We also looked at joining ratios when given two
separate ratios but a common object between the two.
Isabella
We started off September with nth term sequences. This has always
given Isabella a bit of trouble but she started it in school so we
decided to go through it again. Something she needs to remember is
that ’n’ refers to the position of the term in the sequence and not the
term itself. Once this is solidified, I don't think she’ll have anymore
problems with nth term. After this, we did averages; mode, mean,
median and range. We’ll be continuing next month with quadratic
sequences and moving averages.

Daniel
For the month of September, Daniel and I started off with some
algebra. We did expanding, factorizing and simplifying algebraic
expressions. We looked at some GCSE algebra practice questions.
Next, following his school syllabus, we started trigonometry. He
was introduced to this previously but we started the topic from
scratch again as he expressed his dislike for trigs. We spoke about
the practicality of trigonometry and some real life situations where it
could be applied. We looked at the hypotenuse, opposite and
adjacent sides. Lastly, he learned the formula for Pythagoras’
theorem and applied it to a few questions.
