1 FOREWORD
This document is part of a hierarchical structure of documentation which collectively defines
the requirements for protection, control and automation systems at substations owned by, or
intended to be adopted by, Central Networks.
This document should be read in conjunction with the company’s Protection, Control &
Automation Policy (POL-CN-0004), Primary Network Design Manual and Secondary Network
Design Manual.
2 INTRODUCTION
This document details the requirements for the identification of small wiring associated with
protection, control & automation systems.
The identification of individual wires provides the ability to trace circuits through electrical
equipment for the purpose of verifying functionality, for fault-finding and when undertaking
future modifications.
3 SCOPE
This document should be read in conjunction with relevant Energy Networks Association
Technical Specifications. Where there are inconsistencies between the requirements of this
document and relevant Energy Networks Association Technical Specifications, the
requirements of this document shall have precedence.
Prior written authorisation must be obtained from the Network Standards Manager for all
instances of non-compliance with the requirements of this document.
Queries are routinely received about the application of wiring identification to type tested
main equipment such as switchgear or transformers and to Telecontrol RTUs. The
requirements of this document apply to all small wiring, except as follows:
Compliance Required
Terminal Blocks
Auxiliary cable
connections
To other equipment
These requirements do not apply to the small wiring interconnecting the RTU and the
RTU and the terminal blocks. Identifiers are generally not used on these wires as the
specialist staff who work on this equipment have other mechanisms for identifying
wires.

6 REQUIREMENTS
6.1 GENERAL
All wires shall be identified at both ends except for inter-terminal connections on the same
component where the wire length is less than 75mm and is visible for its entire length, which
shall be identified in the middle or at one end only.
Every branch of any connection shall bear the same identification mark.
Where it is necessary to identify branches which are communal (e.g. current transformer
leads), different identification marks for the branches may be employed only if they are
interconnected via links, or are connected to separate terminals which are then
interconnected by removable connections.
Double ferruling / marking of wires is undesirable and shall be avoided where reasonably
practicable. When used, double ferruling shall be applied at a single point only, preferably at
an auxiliary cable termination on a terminal block.
All wires shall be identified by use of cable markers (ferrules). Cable markers shall be either:
a) Single-character sleeves which slide over the insulation of wires which have not been
terminated. The sleeves shall have an interlocking arrangement to enable the easy
alignment of multi-character identifications. The sleeves shall have alpha and numeric
black characters embossed on a white PVC background.
b) Multi-character heat-shrink sleeves which slide over the insulation of wires which
have not been terminated and are then heat-shrunk to form a permanent label. The
heat shrink ratio shall be at least 2:1 and preferably 3:1. The sleeves shall have
characters printed on using a dot matrix or thermal transfer process. Printing shall be
black alpha and numeric characters on a white background. Of paramount
importance is the durability / permanence of the character markings. Printing shall be
permanent and fade-resistant and shall also be smudge-proof and resistant against
abrasion, aggressive cleaning solvents, fuels and oils, both in the shrunk and pre-
shrunk state.
Clip-on, tie-on, wraparound type cable markers are not acceptable for small wiring
identification.
Cable markers shall be suitable for the external diameter of the cable sheath to be identified.
Loose fitting markers which can easily be displaced or migrate away from the wire end are
not acceptable. Removal of the cable sheath to fit markers is strictly prohibited.
6.2.1 GENERAL
Small wiring numbering shall comply with the requirements of the following sections.
Wires shall be identified by use of a wire identifier. A circuit / plant identifier may also be
attached to further aid identification.
Wires shall be identified by use of a function letter followed by a wire number. A suffix letter
may also be attached to further aid identification.
Each wire shall have one or more letters that identify the nature of the circuit with which it is
associated e.g. switchgear control circuit, current transformer circuit, 110Vdc protection
circuit etc.
Circuits having functions not included in the function letter table shall be identified by
agreement with Central Networks, for example the identification of resistance thermometer
wiring and optical cables.
Where part of a circuit is common to more than one function, the first in alphabetical order of
the appropriate function letters in the table shall be used for the common part. Where the
circuits split at a separable contact (fuse, link, switch or relay contact) the function letter shall
change if necessary from the splitting point onwards.
A suffix letter shall be used after the wire number where similarly numbered leads are
present in the protection, control & automation system associated with a single power circuit,
for example:
- Multiple ‘same condition’ telecontrol alarms are required on a single piece of
equipment, e.g. individual SF6 gas pressure alarms for phases L1, L2 and L3
- Multiple current transformers, operating at the same network voltage, are connected
to a protection relay, e.g. mesh corner protection
- Where spare cores are present on several auxiliary cables
The similarly numbered leads shall be distinguished by the use of an initial suffix letter A, B,
C…etc.
A circuit / plant identifier shall be used after the wire identifier where similarly identified wires
are present in a cubicle, rack, kiosk or box which is shared by multiple power circuits, for
example:
- ‘Same condition’ telecontrol alarms, indications, commands and analogues within a
telecontrol marshalling cubicle / box
The circuit / plant identifier shall be applied in the common cubicle, rack, kiosk or box, and at
the common cubicle, rack, kiosk or box end of interconnecting multi-core / multi-pair cables.
The circuit / plant identifier shall commence with a “ / ” character in order to separate the
circuit identifier from the wire identifier. No more than four additional letters or numbers shall
be employed after the “ / ” sign.
(a) Switchgear
The switchgear identifier shall be used where the switchgear has a unique identifier
which is four digits or less in length e.g. “105” for circuit breaker 105, “3S0” for circuit
breaker 3S0, “30RM” for circuit breaker 30RM, “113” for disconnector 113 etc.
Where the switchgear does not have a unique identifier, or the identifier is greater
than four digits long, a two digit number shall be used e.g. “00”, “01”, “02” etc. The
number to be used shall be selected in agreement with Central Networks. At
substations in the Central Networks East area this will be the NAFIRS number for the
circuit.
(b) Transformers
The transformer identifier shall be used e.g. ‘T1’ for transformer T1, “GT1A” for grid
transformer GT1A etc.
The circuit breaker identifier (see 6.4.1 (a) above) shall be used.
Where the feeder circuit is controlled by a single dedicated local circuit breaker, the
circuit breaker identifier (see 6.4.1 (a) above) shall be used.
Where the feeder circuit is controlled by a shared local circuit breaker, the line
disconnector identifier (see 6.4.1 (a) above) shall be used.
