Student Teaching Portfolio

Fall 2023

Lesson 3

In this lesson, students learned about taking their musical ideas and applying it to “Where

the Light Begins”. The students had a few opportunities to work on this towards the end of class

(as shown in the video). Once we finally got to the section that I wanted them to learn for today,

we were able to have more conversations about how we could be more musical with this section.

Unlike the other two lessons, I had to make many adjustments to this lesson to meet

student needs and benefit the entirety of the rehearsal process. As I reviewed the very beginning

of the piece, I noticed that there were some note errors in the unison melodic line in measures

9-11. This caused me to stop them to fix this section. There are a few reasons that I feel that this

could have happened. The most prominent of which is that my first two lessons occurred on a

Thursday and a Friday, and this one occurred on a Monday, so they could have only practiced the

section that was due for today and not review the rest of the piece that we had learned so far.

Instead of moving the lesson along to our musical discussion when I wanted to, I had to review

the melody of the chorus.

I monitored student learning by assessing according to my rubric how well each section

sang measures 14-19. I also monitored student learning by mentally analyzing their musical

ideas. This was a very similar method to what I used in the previous two lessons.

Based on this lesson, I know that I will need to set clearer and stricter expectations on

what needs to be practiced and learned. My co-op and I thought of the idea of assigning
individual singing recordings for a grade so that they are sure to know their music well enough to

make artistic choices with it as they prepare for their concert.
