VOCABULARY UNIT 1

THEME: DESCRIBING PEOPLE YOU KNOW

1.- CLASSMATE

classmate (n.) - someone who is in your class or school

Ryoko is in my class. She is my classmate.

2.- CLOSE FRIENDS

close friend (n.) - someone who you know very well and like very much

We see each other every day. We’re close friends.

3.- NEIGHBOR

neighbor (n.) - someone who lives near you, especially in the next house

James is my neighbor. He lives near me.

4.- ROOMMATE
roommate (n.) - someone who you share a room with

Maria is my roommate in college. We share a room.

5.- BOSS

boss (n.) - someone at work who tells you what to do

Ana is my boss. I work for her.

6.- A COUPLE

a couple (n.) - two people who are married or have a romantic relationship

Daniel and Carmen are dating. They are a couple.

7.- BOYFRIEND
boyfriend (n.) - a man or boy who someone is having a romantic relationship with

This is Daniel. He is my boyfriend.

8.- GIRLFRIEND

girlfriend (n.) - a woman or girl who someone is having a romantic relationship with

This is Carmen. She is my girlfriend.

9.- GRANDCHILDREN

grandchildren (n.) - the children of your son or daughter

These are my grandchildren.

10.- GRANDDAUGHTER
granddaughter (n.) - the daughter of your son or daughter

This is Chloe. She is my granddaughter.

11.- GRANDSON

grandson (n.) - the son of your son or daughter

This is David. He is my grandson.

THEME: NAMING EVERY DAY THINGS

1.- CHASH

cash (n.) - money in the form of coins or notes

A: Do you have any cash with you?


B: No. I only have my credit card.

2.- DRIVER´S LICENSE


driver’s license (n.) - an official document that allows you to drive a car

I got my driver’s license today. Now, I can get a car.

3.- HAIRBRUSH

hairbrush (n.) - a brush that you use to make your hair neat and smooth

I can't find my hairbrush, and I need to brush my hair.

4.- KEYCHAIN

keychain (n.) - a metal ring that keeps your keys together

I keep all my house keys on a keychain.

5.- MIRROR
mirror (n.) - a piece of glass that you use to look at yourself

I have a big mirror in my bedroom. I use it when I comb my hair and put on makeup.

6.- UMBRELLA

umbrella (n.) - something you use to protect yourself from the rain

You need to take your umbrella. It's raining.

7.- CANDY BAR

candy bar (n.) - candy shaped like a thin brick

I love candy bars. They taste so good.

8.- GUM
gum (n.) - a soft candy that you chew but do not swallow

Do you want some gum? I have cherry and grape flavor.

9.- HAND LOTION

hand lotion (n.) - something that you put on your hands to protect them and make them soft

I use hand lotion to keep my hands looking and feeling good.

10.- RECEIPT

receipt (n.) - a piece of paper that you get when you buy something

I bought this TV yesterday, but I want to return it. I need to find the receipt.

11.- TISSUES

tissues (n.) - soft pieces of paper that you can use to clean your nose

There is something on your nose. Do you want a tissue?

12.- WATER BOTTLE


water bottle (n.) - something to keep your water in

I always take my water bottle with me when I go for a walk.

VOCABULARY UNIT 2

THEME: EXPRESSIONS WITH DO, HAVE AND MAKE

1.- DO THE DISHES

I always do the dishes after dinner.

2.- DO THE LAUNDRY

I do the laundry every day, so I always have clean clothes.

3.- DO HOMEWORK
I help my daughter do her homework after school.

4.- DO WORK

She’s busy. She’s doing her work.

5.- MAKE THE BED

I don't like my bedroom to be messy. So, I make the bed every morning.

6.- MAKE PLANS

I’m making plans for next week.


7.- HAVE SOMETHING TO DRINK

I always have something to drink after exercising.

8.- HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT

I always have something to eat when I get to work.

9.- HAVE FREE TIME

She has some free time, so she’s reading and listening to music.

It was my roommate's birthday, so we had a party.

THEME: NAMING WORK AND STUDY ITEMS

1.- HEADPHONES

headphones (n.) - something you wear over your ears so you can listen to music

I listen to music on my headphones when I’m on the bus.

2.- KEYBOARD

keyboard (n.) - a set of keys on a computer

I got a new keyboard for my computer yesterday.

3.- OUTLET
outlet (n.) - a place where you connect electrical equipment to give it electricity

Is there an outlet in this room? My laptop battery is low.

4.- MOUSE

mouse (n.) - a small piece of equipment that you use with your hand to control your computer

My computer has a touchscreen, so I don't need a mouse.

5.- SCREEN

screen (n.) - the part of a television or computer that shows images or writing

My phone needs a new screen.

6.- CALENDAR
calendar (n.) - something that shows all the days, weeks, and months of the year

I use a calendar to help me remember important dates, like my mom’s birthday.

7.- DOCUMENT

document (n.) - a paper with information on it, or a computer file with text

I read all my work documents on my work laptop.

8.- FILES

files (n.) - texts, pictures, computer programs or other information that you keep on a computer

I mostly have music and video files on my laptop.

9.- NOTES
notes (n.) - words that you write down to help you remember something

The students are taking notes.

10.- TEXTBOOK

textbook (n.) - a book about a subject, written for students

This is my biology textbook.

11.- WI-FI

Wi-Fi (n.) - a system for connecting electronic equipment, such as computers and cell phones, to
the internet

I saw that the café had a Wi-Fi sign, so I was able to connect to the internet.
VOCABULARY UNIT 3

THEME: SPORTS

1.- ATHLETE (athit)

athlete (n.) - a person who is very good at sports, especially a person who enters sports
competitions

My cousin is an amazing athlete. He runs in races all over the country.

2.- COURT (cuurt)

court (n.) - an area used for playing sports such as tennis and basketball

There is a basketball court near me. There isn't a tennis court.

3.- FANS (fens)


fan (n.) - someone who admires and supports a person, sport, sports team, etc.

More than 10,000 fans are at the final game of the season.

4.- FIELD (fild)

field (n.) - an area of grass used for playing sports

My college has a very big football field.

5.- GOAL (goul)

goal (n.) - an area on a field where players try to send the ball to win the game

He scored a goal.

6.- GYM (llim)


gym (n.) - a place or club with machines, weights, and other equipment where you go to exercise

My gym has lots of weights and running machines.

1.- POOL

pool (n.) - an area of water for swimming that was made by people

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: I go to the pool every day to swim.

2.- RACE

ace (n.) - a competition in which all the competitors try to be the fastest

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: They are running a race.

3.- TEAM (tim)


team (n.) - a number of people who do something together as a group

SENTENCE EXAMPLE: This is my favorite soccer team.

4.- PLAYER (pleyer)

player (n.) - someone who takes part in a game or sport

The two basketball players are on different teams.

5.- WIN (guin)

win (v.) - to be the best in a competition and/or to get a prize in a competition

The home team is winning 31 to 23.

6.- LOSE
lose (v.) - to not be the best in a game or competition; to not win

The visiting team is losing 23 to 31.

THEME: EXERCISING

1.- CLIMB (claimb)

climb (v.) - to go up, or to go toward the top of something

Last weekend I climbed a mountain.

2.- JUMP (llamp)

jump (v.) - to push yourself off the ground using your legs
She’s jumping on the bed.

3.- LIE DOWN (lai daun)

lie down (ph. v.) - to move into a position in which your body is flat, usually to sleep or rest

I like to lie down on the couch and watch TV.

4.- LIFT

lift (v.) - to put something or someone in a higher position

He’s lifting a very heavy box.

5.- PUSH

push (v.) - to move something or someone by pressing them with your hands or body

They pushed the car out of the snow.

6.- SIT DOWN (sit daun)


sit down (ph. v.) - to move your body to rest on a seat or on the ground

He is sitting down on the chair.

7.- STAND UP (stand ap)

stand up (ph. v.) - to go from sitting down to being on your feet

He was sitting on the chair, but now he is standing up.

8.- STETCH

stretch (v.) - to make your body or part of your body straighter and longer

I stretch at work when I feel tired.

9.- THROW (trou)


throw (v.) - to make something move through the air by pushing it out of your hand

He’s throwing the football.

10.- TURN (tourn)

turn (v.) - to move your body to face another direction

They’re turning to talk to each other.

THEME: DESCRIBING POP CULTURE


1.- ACTOR

actor (n.) - a person who plays someone else in a movie, play, or television or radio program

She’s a really good actor. She wants to be in a movie one day.

2.- BAND (baend)

band (n.) - a group of musicians who play modern music together

I like this band a lot. They mostly play rock music.

3.- DIRECTOR

director (n.) - a person who is in charge of a movie or play and tells the actors how to play their
parts

The man in the chair is the movie director.

4.- TV SHOW (ti vi show)


TV show (n.) - a program on television

They are watching a really funny TV show.

5.- VIDEO GAME

video game (n.) - a game in which the player controls moving pictures on a screen by pushing
buttons

I tell my kids to stop playing video games and to play outside, but they don't listen

6.- ARTIST

artist (n.) - someone who paints, draws, or makes sculptures

She’s a really good artist. She paints amazing pictures.

7.- ART FESTIVAL


art festival (n.) - an organized set of special events with different artists

There is a big art festival in my city every year.

8.- CONCERT

concert (n.) - a performance of music by one or more musicians or singers

This is a great concert. There are so many people here, and the music is really good!

9.- MUSICIAN

musician (n.) - a person who is good at playing music and usually does it as a job

She can play the piano and violin. She is a very good musician.

10.- SINGER
singer (n.) - a person who sings

She’s a really good singer. She has a beautiful voice.

THEME: NAMING GIFT ITEMS

1.- BOUQUET OF FLOWERS (bukei of flowers)

bouquet of flowers (n. phrase) - a group of flowers that people give as a present or for a special
event

Men often give their wife or girlfriend a bouquet of flowers on Valentine’s Day.

2.- CANDLE

candle (n.) - a stick of wax with a piece of string that burns to give light

The electricity is out because of the storm. Can you light a candle?

3.- CANDY
candy (n.) - a sweet food made from sugar or chocolate

I love candy, but I know it’s bad for my teeth.

4.- GIFT CARD

gift card (n.) - a card that gives someone a certain amount of money to buy things at a store

I need to buy my dad something for his birthday. Maybe I’ll just get him a gift card. Then he can
buy what he wants.

5.- JEWELRY

jewelry (n.) – objects such as earrings and rings that you wear to decorate your body

My sister doesn’t really like jewelry. She sometimes wears earrings, but that’s about it.

6.- PERFUME (perfium)


perfume (n.) - a liquid with a strong, pleasant smell that you put on your skin

I like your perfume. It smells really good.

7.- PHONE CHARGER

phone charger (n.) - a device for recharging a phone battery (= filling it with electricity)

Can I borrow your phone charger? I forgot mine, and my phone is almost out of battery.

8.- PURSE (purss)

purse (n.) – a bag for money, keys, and small personal items; a handbag

She's putting her phone in her purse.

9.- SPEAKERS
speakers (n.) - pieces of electrical equipment for hearing sound

I like these speakers. They are very loud and very clear.

10.- SWEATSHIRT

sweatshirt (n.) - an informal shirt made of thick cotton with long sleeves

He's wearing a yellow sweatshirt with a hood.
