Learner Services

“I never believed that I would get this far.”

From an early age at school, Claudette struggled with English and maths.
Fortunately, she was creative which meant that she was able to achieve a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at
University. However, it was while studying for her degree that Claudette first found out she was dyslexic
and was able to access the support she needed to write her dissertation.
It was not until she was applying for jobs that a lack of English and maths qualifications became a barrier
to getting on with her career. An unexpected period of being unable to work provided Claudette with the
opportunity to tackle this gap in her skills.
Claudette says, “I wanted to become confident with numbers and overcome my fear of them so I could feel
confident both in myself and at work. To do this, I have had a specialist screening to pinpoint my learning
needs and been supported by tutors and learning support assistants.
I am also now allowed extra time to complete written exams, which means I now feel like I can do myself
justice. This has relieved some of the anxiety and pressure that I used to feel about exams.
Having gone back into education, I feel that this support has allowed me to reach my potential in maths
and other subjects. I would encourage other learners to ask for help and take advantage of the support
that is available. When I started on my learning journey, I told myself that I would never be able to learn
because of my dyslexia. Learning a little showed me that I could learn - and little by little I made progress.”

“Overcoming my barriers to learning has enabled me to believe in myself.”

10
We are here to help you succeed

support available to overcome your barriers to learning and being successful in your studies.

Depending on your needs, you can receive:
• support from a Learning Support Worker
• an assessment to see if you would benefit from extra time or other arrangements in exams
• equipment to help you access a classroom or computer
• British Sign Language interpretation service

Financial support
We can support you with:
• travel costs
• class materials and learning resources
• IT equipment
• childcare costs

Other support

personal finance, health and wellbeing.

and computer skills.
If more specialist information, advice and guidance is needed we can signpost you to other
organisations offering support.

English, Mathematics
and Science

Qualifications and knowledge in these core subjects open

doors to better opportunities in life, education and work.
As a basic requirement for most jobs you now need to be able to show that you possess a basic level of
reading, writing and maths skills. Without a GCSE or Functional Skills level 2 qualification in English and
maths it is increasingly difficult to get a job interview for a better paid job, or gain a promotion.
Without a qualification in science it is becoming more difficult to meet the entrance criteria to study on
most further education courses.

Tackle those gaps in your knowledge and be empowered

Being confident in the use of these essential skills will help you to make better decisions and put an end
to any worries you feel about being embarrassed in everyday life.
We offer a variety of courses from Entry Level to GCSE courses at various times including evenings and
Saturdays. There are face-to-face courses as well as those that run in virtual classrooms. English and
maths courses are free for most people.
On our courses, you will learn maths and English skills through exploring everyday life situations. You will
see how the skills you are acquiring relate to day-to-day tasks like paying bills and credit cards, writing
emails and finding the best deals while shopping.
Having nationally recognised qualifications and good English and maths skills empower you to have more
choices and the ability to improve the quality of life for yourself and for your family.

12
Finding the right course at the right level for you
To help us to place you on the right course, we will ask you to come to one of our centres to take an Initial
Assessment. We don’t want you to worry about this or let it put you off joining a class. The assessment
consists of a conversation with a teacher and an appropriate task. The information we find out from this
assessment means we will then be able to place you in a class which is at the right level for you.

Skills for Life - Mathematics
To get on at work, start a further education course, or just to feel
more confident when using numbers in your everyday life join a
maths course.
Lose your fear of numbers!
Improving your maths skills will empower you to take control of your life and help to give you and your
family a better future. Successfully completing a maths course will
• build your problem solving and analytical skills
• improve your career prospects by showing you have sought after knowledge and understanding
• develop the numerical knowledge needed to study a wide range of other subjects
• build confidence to make important daily financial decisions
• let you help with your children’s homework
• reignite your love of learning by challenging yourself to learn things
The good news is maths courses are free for most people

It’s easier than ever to learn

“If I don’t do this now
I might never do it.”
Jonathan currently works for Birmingham
City Council in the Waste Department.
In his spare time, he volunteers as a
community special police officer. His
ambition is to get a full-time job in the
police force.
As Jonathan approached his thirtieth birthday, he
was starting to think that his chance of achieving his
dream was fading fast. He didn’t want to live with
regrets, he decided to do something about it.
Jonathan says, “I was starting to feeling like a plant
that sits in the corner of the office, I was in danger of
becoming rooted in my job and the life I was living. I
decided that I needed to be proactive and have one
more go at getting the qualifications I needed to join
the police.
Jonathan is a dyslexic learner, who in spite of these
challenges has shown amazing improvements in his
knowledge and skills. He has achieved this through
hard work, dedication, persistence and having the
burning desire to reach his goal.
He has had to work hard to fit his studies around a
job, his volunteering and everyday life. To achieve
this he has made the most of the different types of
learning available and mixed his twice a week online
English class with an onsite daytime class in Maths.
Through all his studies, Jonathan has shown himself to
be a helpful and caring character. He enjoys working
with others and has a positive outlook on life. These
personal skills combined with his new knowledge
and skills will give him every chance of success in his
chosen career.

Special Educational Needs
and Disabilities (SEND)

Our programmes of study are designed to both inspire and

develop skills for living independently and social inclusion.
At BAES, we offer courses for adults with additional needs or disabilities that will help them to thrive and
develop the many skills needed to live independently and actively participate in their local community.
Our courses are designed to help people fulfil their potential, personal and/or career goals.

Our SEND provision caters for developing educational needs for learners who are aged 19+. Our courses are
taught in five of our centres that are spread across Birmingham.

SEND courses are available at...

**New this year at Saltley and Sparkhill Centres**

Classes are kept small with a maximum of 11 learners per class. Each programme of study is broken down
into sessions that are taught over two full days per week. Most classes have the additional support of
a Learning Support Assistant or a volunteer meaning that learners are given as much individual support
as needed. This level of support enables the learners to develop their independence not only educationally
but socially.

18
How does our SEND programme work and how will it help you
Our programme is made up of a series of courses that combined together make up a 3-year progressive
programme. The courses begin at pre-entry level and through the 3 years progress to Entry 2. English,
maths and IT are included in all programmes of study. At the end of year 3 you will have the opportunity to
gain accreditation at Entry 1 or 2 in English, maths and IT. You will also have the choice of developing further
skills in one of two areas, Working in Catering or Independent Living Skills. The intention is to develop the
skills needed to progress onto supported or paid employment, or to be able to carry out voluntary work.
Finding the right course at the right level for you
Not everyone needs to start at the beginning of the programme. Before you join the course you will have an
assessment and the information from this will help us to find the right course for you to join.
If you are not sure about which course best suits your needs, or you want to discuss future goals, then our
team are here to offer comprehensive information, advice, guidance, and support.

English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL)

Being able to confidently communicate in English will

enable you to live a fuller life and thrive in the UK.
There are many reasons that improving English skills will improve your day-to-day life. You will be able
to talk to your neighbours, feel more confident shopping, help your children with their homework and
visit the doctor and be understood. Improving the way you communicate in English will also help you
to get a job, and enable you to apply for better ones.

If English is not your first language and if you are a permanent resident in the UK,
then one of our ESOL courses is just what you’re looking for!
We have a range of ESOL courses at centres across the city where you can practise speaking, listening,
reading, and writing skills. You will learn the language you need to interact with your local community
and to make the most of training and job opportunities available to you.
Our ESOL courses are classroom based, run at different times of the day and are delivered by
qualified teachers. We will help you to develop confidence using English which will empower you to
take better control of your everyday life. You will learn English using real-life situations and classes
will include individual work, group work, pair work, role play, discussions, and giving presentations.
When you join an ESOL course with BAES, you will be able to access extra opportunities to practise

20
your English by joining in our Conversation Clubs and wellbeing activities. We also run short course
classes to help you develop IT skills and to get you ready for jobs and further courses in Health and
Social Care. We even run a course to help you have the language knowledge you will need for the
Driving Theory test.

You will be working towards Skills for Life qualifications with support from our
teaching staff
We offer courses from Pre-entry level for learners who have very little English, through to ESOL - Level
1 for learners who want to develop their English for further study or employment. At the end of the
course, you will be able to progress to a higher level ESOL course or enrol onto a vocational course.

Finding the right course at the right level for you

To help us to place you on the right course, we will ask you to come to one of our centres to take
an Initial Assessment. We don’t want you to worry about this or let it put you off joining a class.
The assessment consists of a conversation with a teacher and a short writing task. We will then be
able to place you in the class which is at the right level for you.

"It feels like it's only
the beginning."
Linda’s goal is to return to teaching
and work in the UK having previously
worked in Saudi Arabia as a qualified
primary school teacher.
Born in the UK, she always dreamed of coming
back and eventually moved to Birmingham in
2022. Linda has navigated the demands of life in a
new city with her children, settling them into a new
school, and then enrolling at BAES on both English
and maths courses as stepping stones to returning
to teaching.
Although a Level 2 qualification was important,
Linda agreed with the long-term view and enrolled
on Level 1 to give herself as much time as possible
for language development. “It was a difficult
decision but the right path for me, and I’ll go on to
Level 2 stronger. I was thrilled when I passed my
exams. It was very encouraging and I’m excited to
come back in September to continue to the next
level. My confidence has soared and it feels like it’s
only the beginning.”
Linda’s determination to succeed has never
wavered. She has taken on board every piece of
advice, and seized every single opportunity to
improve her English across all skills, with fantastic
results. Success at Level 2 will enable her to take up
a conditional offer to gain a professional teaching
qualification in the UK.
Her tutor says, “She’s a fantastic student, with
excellent learning strategies, and never afraid to
take on any challenge; a popular member of the
group who is always ready to support her peers
whatever the need, academic or otherwise.
It’s a pleasure to have Linda learning with us.”

French for fun, travel
and work
When Bev was at school, she had
loved French, but her A Level choices
meant she couldn’t continue to
study it.
That was until Spring 2019 when passing the
Library of Birmingham, she decided the time was
right to pick it up again. Starting at the Beginners
level she has quickly progressed to nearly
Intermediate level.
Initially, a quiet learner in the classroom, she now
enjoys the group atmosphere and being with like-
minded people who want to learn a new language.
When Bev started the course, she was working at
National Express in an administration role. She has
recently moved to a job as an Operations Analyst
at Birmingham Airport. As her career progresses,
Bev expects to engage more with passengers
and knows her language skills will hold her in
good stead. Part of the appeal of continuing on
the course is that her language skills can open
up exciting new career opportunities. Someday in
the future Bev is keen to try to work abroad.
Now that travelling has become easier, she and a
group of friends had a trip to Paris where Bev was
able to put her language skills into practice. She
says “People are really appreciative when you
try to engage with them in their own language.
Everyone I spoke to in shops and restaurants was
really patient with me.”
Bev really enjoys learning with her group and
tutor and wants to eventually progress to the
Advanced Conversation and Culture course.

In November 2022 we asked our learners to write

listened attentively to every question I had and was extremely helpful. Just the one conversation I have
had has improved my self esteem. It has made me feel like I can go back to college to further my maths
and possibly another course that would help me with the right qualifications for work. She was a fantastic
advisor and without her help I wouldn’t have known what direction to go in.”

Managing data and
daddy day-care
Four years ago, Emile was a Data
Manager for an organisation back in
Rwanda. When he moved to the UK, he
found his experience and qualifications
were not recognised when trying to find
work.
Emile was determined to continue his career in
IT and data analysis. He decided the first thing he
needed to do was improve his general software
knowledge and to get a qualification that proved his
proficiency in Microsoft applications. He enrolled
onto an online ICDL – Advanced Level 3 course with
BAES.
Emile is a primary care provider for two small
children while his wife also studies to get the
qualifications she needs for them to make a better
life in the UK. For him, the course being online,
with support available from a tutor, was a perfect
fit for his personal circumstances. He was able to
work at his own pace and allocate dedicated time
to focus on completing modules around childcare.
All through the course, Emile maintained extremely
high work standards and achieved great results
in his final exams. During his studies, he has also
somehow managed to find time to support other
class members who have struggled with specific
parts of the software.
Emile is now studying Power BI, a Microsoft
business application. The skills he gained from ICDL
- Level 3 allowed him to enrol onto that course. He
is currently waiting to hear back on his application
to start a Masters Degree in Data Analysis at
Birmingham University.

Train to Earn
Is a gap in your workskills stopping
you getting that job?

A training programme that gets you into work fast

Train to Earn is designed to allow you to quickly get the qualifications and
workskills you will need to be successful in the workplace.
Our Employment Team works with local employers to recruit to real job opportunities by setting up short,
intensive training that has a guaranteed job interview on successful completion of the programme.
Our tutors and employment team have extensive experience of getting people ready to return to work and
supporting them to overcome any barriers that might be stopping them getting and staying in work.
We currently run programmes in the following employment sectors
• Retail, Hospitality and Customer Service
• Construction
Guaranteed
• Logistics
• Health and Social Care job interview
• Business, IT and Office work at the end of
with established local businesses such as the programme
National Express, Midland Mencap and Summerhill Services Ltd

How does it work?

Our two or three week training programme will help you to gain specific qualifications and develop
essential workskills so that you are ready and able to start work quickly.
During the programme you will also meet a representative from your potential employer so that you can
find out more about them. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the
job and your future career prospects.
We will make sure that you have a great CV and understand how to write a effective application form so
that you are equipped to apply for jobs.

40
Why you should give it a go
Our training programme is completely free to you. Furthermore, because we only set up programmes
with employers who are actively looking to recruit to current positions, on successful completion of the
programme you will have the opportunity to interview for real job vacancies.
Employers report back to us that candidates who have been through the Train to Earn programme have
performed very well at interview. Having received our support to research and understand the job role
our candidates are very often appointed into vacant posts.
By completing a Train to Earn programme you will also be developing a range of transferable workskills
that are relevant to a wide range of jobs. If, at a later point you decide this type of employment is not
right for you, you will have developed skills that are required for other jobs.
This includes; Customer service, problem solving, personal presentation, teamwork, time-keeping, and
acceptable behaviour in the workplace.
Dependent on the type of work involved in the programme you join you will also have achieved
qualifications such as Food Safety or Health and Safety, safeguarding, IT and computers. These
qualifications will improve your CV and make you a more attractive employment prospect for future job
applications.

How to join a programme

Before you join one of our training programmes we will need you to meet with one of our employment
team. We will invite you to come into one of our centres for a short assessment session where we
can tell you more about the opportunity. We will also do a quick check that you have the right level of
English and maths skills to succeed on the programme.

Health and Social Care

Make a difference in the lives of others

We do not always recognise the skills and natural talents
many of us make use of on a daily basis. Characteristics like
caring, nurturing and supporting others are exactly what is
needed to work in the Health & Social Care sector.
Working with children and young people
No two days are the same when you are working with children and young people. At times, it can be
challenging, but the satisfaction you will get when you see the positive impact of your work means that
you will never regret your career choice.
Our range of courses will enhance the skills and talents you already possess. You will develop a range of
professional skills and knowledge so you are ready to work in one of a wide range of careers available in
this employment sector.
Health & Social Care - work in a world that values people skills
Developing a career working in a Health and Social Care setting can be incredibly satisfying, but requires
dedication, determination, emotional resilience and, most of all, a real desire to help others.
If you are dedicated to working with or caring for others and want to prove your ability to employers, then
we have the ideal courses for you! Our courses are suitable for support workers and care assistants to gain
the essential qualifications needed to work in a care setting.

44
Counselling & Mentoring - develop your valuable talents and build a rewarding
new career helping others!
It is not always possible to overcome the problems that life throws at us without a bit of specialist help.
Our counselling and mentoring courses will help you develop the skills you will need to help others resolve
personal issues, develop and grow. On these courses, you will learn and develop skills that are valued in
many careers such as teaching, nursing and care work.
Finding the right course for you
To help us to place you on the right course, we will ask you to come to one of our centres for an Initial
Assessment. The assessment consists of a conversation with a teacher to find out more about your
previous experience and to check your current level of English and maths. The information we find out
from this assessment means we will then be able to place you in a class which is at the right level for
you and also to arrange additional English and maths support if you need to get qualifications in these
subjects.

Dedicated to family,
learning and career
Kulvir’s son was born with a series of
health issues and needs extra support
to attend and learn at school.
Seeing the special bond Kulvir has with her son and
the way she related to other children, a teacher at
his school suggested she should consider training to
work with children. Jumping at the chance to have a
career doing something she loved, she enrolled on a
Level 2 Supporting Teaching & Learning course.
Juggling a demanding homelife while succeeding on
this challenging course is difficult. However, Kulvir
has immersed herself wholeheartedly into her
course. She is always among the first to complete
homework and pushes herself to go the extra mile
with her coursework. If all this wasn’t enough,
Kulvir has made the most of the flexible online
learning opportunities at BAES, ready to use this
extra knowledge when she starts her first job.
She not only excels at college but the headteacher
at the school where she has her placement is full
of praise too: “Kulvir has been with the Year 2 class
for a few weeks now, and in that time, she’s built
relationships with all of the children in the class,
in particular a core group of children she has been
supporting regularly in class. She has a lovely
manner with the children and is extremely willing to
get involved and support in any way she is needed.”
Kulvir is now applying for jobs and plans to continue
onto the level 3 course. We are sure, with this
amazing dedication and attitude, she will go far.

Arts & Crafts

Whether you are a complete beginner or a skilled arts and

crafts practitioner there is something for everyone in our
exciting new Arts & Crafts course programme.
Choose from our extensive range of new courses to either spark a new creative interest or build on
an existing passion. We have many new courses to choose from in Drawing and Painting, Digital
Photography and Editing, Music and Performance, Cookery, Textiles and much, much more.
Look after yourself - relax and escape from everyday life
Many people experienced the mental health and wellbeing benefits of doing arts and crafts during
lockdown. It is important to remember to make space in your day-to-day life to continue enjoying your
artistic endeavours.
Doing an arts course can also be a fun and easy way to meet new like-minded people who have similar
and shared interests.
How will I learn?
We have many different levels of courses available, from complete beginners through to intermediate
and advanced levels. You can learn either by joining a class where you will be lead through different art
and crafts projects by one of our experienced and qualified tutors. Alternatively, if you know already
what you want to make or do join one of our intermediate classes, here you will work on your own
projects and our tutors will be available to offer tips and guide you as much as necessary.

“I am now seeing the
world in a new light.”
It was Sonia’s advisor at the Shaw Trust
who first suggested she should think
about joining an art class to improve her
health and wellbeing.
She had enjoyed art as a child and it seemed like
a good way to socialise with other people so she
plucked up the courage to enrol onto a drawing
class.
Since then both Sonia’s wellbeing and and artistic
skills have gone from strength to strength. Starting
off with one art class she soon joined an extra one as
she was enjoying the sessions so much.
Sonia is here to develop her skills, in her work she
never takes the easy option but chooses projects and
uses materials which she knows will challenge her.
Her enjoyment of art is now so deep she spends any
spare time at home completing classwork or trying
new art projects. Sonia is also a valued member of
the art classes she attends, always making time to
look out for the rest of the group’s welfare.
One of Sonia’s first drawings was selected for an
art exhibition at the Library of Birmingham. Though
amazed to see her work in such a prominent place it
was a great boost to her self-belief.
It is a pleasure to have Sonia in the studio, her
demeanor has transformed so much since she
started classes. She now walks in with so much
more confidence, always has a smile on her face and
is keen to show her latest work.
Sonia says that since starting art classes she is
looking at everything in a new light. She is noticing
the world around her in a new way and seeing art
principles and ideas within her surroundings.
