● A pleasant day to each and everyone, especially to our respective course instructor in
Rma,Ar. Bernadine Ilagan and to our panels for today (state names).
● Just to introduce ourselves, I am Ma. Micaela Mañosca together with my research mates,
Jennifer Domingo and Kristine Apdua. We are here to present our project proposal
entitled A Proposed Batangas City Medical Tourism Center.

(NEXT SLIDE)

FOR CHAPTER 1:
-THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
● We came across this topic as we browsed the net for information regarding our other
topic about a transport terminal in Calamba city.
● We,the proponents, found a recent article about The Department of Tourism (DOT)
actively promoting medical tourism in the Philippines.
● In the article, heresay, “Department of Tourism (DOT) is currently engaged in proactive
efforts to enhance medical tourism in the Philippines, by leveraging the expertise of the
country's acclaimed physicians and the unique Filipino approach to healthcare.
Additionally, Boracay, and CALABARZON are being explored as potential wellness
destinations within the Philippines.”
● What is a medical tourism center? Obviously it is a healthcare facility designated for
foreign or local tourists and searching for much cheaper medications or wellness related
stuff.
● A medical tourism center is nag siserve din as a core then nag babranch out siya with the
other hospitals around the globe or the city where it is located. Si medical center yung
magsasabi or mag rerefer sa patient nung hospital around the area na kinakailangan niya.
● Upon reading CALABARZON is included sa mga locations na DOT is eyeing, naisip
namin kaagad ang Batangas City since it has a number of hospitals and as I have
observed personally, many of the patients from other regions ay here sa batangas dinadala
whenever hindi available ang mga facilities.
● An example is pag nagkakasakit yung mga kamag-anak namin from Calamba city ,
Laguna most of the time sa Batangas dinadala. They are already considered den as
medical tourists.

Here is our Statement of the problem. We listed a set of major and a set of minor
problems that we’ve encountered as we dig deeper about the topic.
-MAJOR STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. Since we are aiming for a vernacular and sustainable design, we are wondering about
ways on how we can incorporate these approaches to the design.
2. Architectural strategies and innovations are able to bolster its market presence. A unique
way, how can this development stand out from other medical tourism centers locally and
globally? One of the big problems here to address is that though the Philippines offer a
value for money services “kuno” according to articles here in the Philippines, bakit hindi
parin tayo pinipili ng nakadadaming tourists? Ano ba yung pagkukulang natin? Aside
from our budgets allocated for this kind of facility obviously.
3. If for example we are going to incorporate a technologically advanced application in the
design, how can we, in this case, still promote job opportunities for the locals
4. How can we be able to promote cross-cultural relationships? Diversity in Design? How
can we improve our global status?
5. So we thought about using cost-effective materials pero what cost-effective materials can
be utilized without compromising the aesthetics, functionality, and technological aspects
of the project?

-MINOR STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In terms of minor aspects naman we have here:
1. The architectural style, spaces needed, and architectural elements.

SO YUNG MGA NABANGGIT NA YUN ANG NEED MA ADDRESS NG STUDY NA TO

ASIDE FROM ITS FEASIBILITY.

as a reference guide which will help the future researchers who wish to conduct the same study
or any study-related study in completion of their own design projects.

-SCOPE AND LIMITS

● Now, let’s talk about the scope and limitations of the study. The study focuses on three
(3) key areas: conceptualization, designing and planning, and innovation. These aspects
are crucial in understanding the architectural elements of the project.
● In conceptualization, we will be exploring the initial ideas and vision behind the project.
This includes identifying the goals, requirements and overall concepts that shape the
design process.
● Moving on to the designing and planning, we will be checking into the details of creating
a sustainable and functional architectural design. This involves considering factors such
as space utilization, energy efficiency, and material selection.
● The study also highlights the importance of innovation in architectural design. We
explore new technologies, materials, and construction methods that can enhance the
sustainability and performance of the aspect.
● While the limitation of the study focuses on architectural aspects, it has limitations
regarding structure engineering. Although there are limitations, the study provides
important project details that can be used as a foundation for future research.
Additionally, an economic evaluation will be conducted to determine the
cost-effectiveness of sustainable design. However, financial limitations may prevent a
thorough long-term cost analysis.
-THEORETICAL
● This study is anchored on several influential theories and concepts that shape the
understanding of the project. These theories provide a solid foundation for exploring the
different dimensions of architecture and sustainability.
● One of the key figures in architectural theory is Vitruvius. His concept of the Vitruvian
Triad emphasizes the 3 fundamental principles of architecture: firmitas (firmness), utilitas
(commodity), and venustas (delight). These principles guide the design process and
ensure that the architectural solution is not only structurally sound but also functional and
aesthetically pleasing.
● Next, we have Janine Beynus and her concept of biomimetic architecture. This approach
draws inspiration from nature’s design principles and processes to create sustainable and
innovative architectural solutions. By mimicking nature’s efficiency and resilience,
biomimetic architecture aims to create buildings that harmonize with the environment
and promote sustainability.
● Moving on, we have Homi K. Bhabha and his work on cultural diversity and cultural
differences. In the context of architecture, cultural diversity plays a vital role in shaping
the design process. Understanding and respecting cultural differences allows architects to
create space that reflect the identity and values of the community they serve. This
approach fosters inclusivity and promotes a sense of belonging.
● Lastly, we have John Elkington and his concept of the triple bottom line theory. This
theory expands the traditional notion of business success to include not only economic
factors but also social and environmental, and economic impacts pf their designs. The
goal is to create buildings that not only meet the needs of the present but also contribute
positively to the future.

-CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
● The conceptual framework of the research study involves 3 key components: input,
process and output.
● Input - This includes project objectives, identifying major and minor problems, research
analysis, and data gathering. It sets the foundation for the design process by defining the
goals and analyzing the challenges that need to be addressed.
● Process - The design process focuses on a sustainable and vernacular approach, cultural
integration, cost-efficient design, and innovative concepts. It emphasizes using
environmentally friendly and culturally appropriate design principles, considering cost
efficiency, and incorporating innovative ideas into the design.
● Output - The proposed Batangas City Medical Tourism Center is the outcome of the
research study. It reflects the sustainable and vernacular approach, cultural integration,
cost efficiency, and innovative design concepts. The center aims to serve the needs of
medical tourists while promoting local culture and contributing to the development of
Batangas City.
● In summary, the conceptual framework involves defining project objectives, analyzing
problems, and gathering data as input. The design process focuses on sustainability,
cultural integration, cost efficiency, and innovation. The output is the proposed Medical
Tourism Center that embodies these principles and serves as a functional and culturally
integrated facility.
