Activity 5. Group management

Group Activity
Duration: 30 minutes –

Consider the scenario(s) given below and discuss how you would manage the group.

Scenario How to manage the group

1. Your learners have formed very distinct

sub-groups and are resistant to working
with others when you try to split them up
to create different groups for certain
activities.

2. You have a group within a group whose

members are silent throughout most of the
session and don’t take part in group
discussions. If you split them into smaller
groups, one or two carry out the task
while the others watch.

3. You have a practical session and personal

protective equipment is required. Two of
the group repeatedly turn up without this
equipment, and insist that other teachers
allow them to participate in practical
sessions without it.

4. You have a group of adult learners, most

of whom are friends and tend to talk about
life outside the course rather than getting
on with tasks set during the day. Others in
the group find this frustrating.
