Tutorial 3: Single Sideband (SSB) Communication Systems

1. Define the following terms:

i. Single sideband full carrier (SSBFC)

ii. Single sideband suppressed carrier (SSBSC)
iii. Single sideband reduced carrier (SSBRC)
iv. Independent sideband (ISB)
v. Vestigial sideband (VSB)

2. Draw the frequency spectrum for each SSB systems in Question 1.

3. State the advantages and disadvantages of SSB when compared to conventional AM system.

4. For the balanced ring modulator circuit, a carrier input frequency of 400 kHz, a modulating
signal with frequency ranges from 0 to 4 kHz, determine

i. Output frequency spectrum.

ii. Output frequency for a single frequency input of 2.8 kHz.

5. For a 3-stage conversion SSB transmitter, a low frequency carrier of 100 kHz, a medium
frequency carrier of 4 MHz, a high frequency carrier of 30 MHz, and a modulating signal
frequency range of 0 to 4 kHz,

i. Sketch the spectrum for the following points: Balanced modulator 1 out, BPF 1 out,
summer out, Balanced modulator 2 out, BPF 2 out, Balanced modulator 3 out and BPF 3
out.
ii. For a single frequency input of 1.5 kHz, determine the translated frequency for the
following points: BPF 1 out, BPF 2 out and BPF 3 out.

6. For a single conversion SSB transmitter, a 0 to 3 kHz modulating signal and a 28 MHz carrier
signal,

i. Sketch the output frequency spectrum.

ii. For a single frequency modulating signal of 2.2 kHz, determine the output frequency.

7. For a phase shift SSB transmitter, an input carrier frequency of 500 kHz, and a modulating
signal frequency range of 0 to 4 kHz,

i. Sketch the frequency spectrum at the output of the linear summer.

ii. For a single modulating signal frequency of 3 kHz, determine the output frequency.

8. What is the difference between a coherent and a noncoherent receiver?

9. For the noncoherent BFO SSB receiver, a RF input frequency of 35.602 MHz, a RF local
oscillator frequency of 25 MHz, and a 2 kHz modulating signal frequency, determine the IF
and BFO frequencies.
