Rattle - An Inventory of Forms

Editions Piqpoq 2023 ISBN 9782919459124 Acqn 34051
Pb 15x24cm 128pp col ills £33.75

The rattle is often the first toy a child is given, because it stimulates their five senses and helps in
their development. Its role as a toy that promotes early learning is essential, but it also acts as a
"transitional" object, reassuring the baby when separated from their mother. Inspired by new
theories of child development, 20th-century designers such as Kay Bojesen, Patrick Rylands, and
Antonio Vitali made revolutionary changes to this familiar object. Drawing on a unique collection,
this book presents a rigorous selection of dozens of imaginative creations from this period, with
materials ranging from different kinds of natural wood to the smooth, brightly coloured surfaces of
plastic.

Interior Desecration
Corraini Edizioni 2023 ISBN 9791254930748 Acqn 34076
Hb 12x16cm col ills £46

"The illustrator's job is a fabulous one: to add fantasy to the written text and make the emotion
hidden between the words immediate to read. In Steven Guarnaccia's drawings, there is also the
irony with which he seasons his images and 'demythologises' what would at first glance remain
extraneous, transforming all objects into something sympathetic and familiar."With these words,
Michele De Lucchi accurately describes the work of Steven Guarnaccia. He has worked for major
magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Abitare, Rolling Stone and Domus,
and has created murals for Disney Cruise Lines and exhibition drawings for a show of Achille
Castiglioni at the Museum of Modern Art. His career is a long journey in the world of illustration
and this book, consisting of precious images from his vast personal archive full of drafts,
unpublished drawings and sketches that later led to now "historical" images is a precious and
indispensable object for those who love Steven's work and for those who want to know and study
it in depth. Interior Desecration is being released in conjunction with an exhibition of the same
name opening in NY on November 8 2023 at the Salotto exhibition space.

Riccardo Dalisi - The Chickpea Chair

Corraini Edizioni 2023 ISBN 9791254930588 Acqn 34092
Pb 17x24cm 144pp col ills £22

Architect, designer and artist, in the early 1970s Riccardo Dalisi encouraged street children in the
Rione Traiano, Naples, to design small furniture and architectural elements, using simple and
'design ultrapoverissimo' materials such as wood, string and metal wires. "La sedia del cece"
(The Chickpea Chair) is a work by a very small girl, Rosa, on whose interpretation various artists
and intellectuals, including Andy Warhol, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass and Enzo Mari,
drew. This volume - produced on the occasion of the exhibition "Riccardo Dalisi. Radicalmente",
curated by Gabriele Neri at the MAXXi in Rome - collects many of the drawings made by the
artists prompted by Dalisi, and together with texts by architects and critics such as Stefano Boeri,
Domitilla Dardi, Paolo Deganello, Fulvio Irace, Ugo La Pietra, Franco Purini and Angela Tecce, it
becomes a manifesto of his "modus operandi".

Puppets and the Avantgarde

Corraini Edizioni 2023 ISBN 9791254930762 Acqn 34093
Hb 21x25cm 320pp col ills £61.50

When a puppet breaks the "fourth wall"- that is, the capacity for emotional involvement of a
successful performance - it wins the trust of the audience, giving the show the power to blur the
division between stage and world, between art and life. Understanding this were those artists,
leading figures in the world of Art and Figure Theater, who looked to "creative play" as a source
of aesthetic inspiration to seek new modes of visual expression. This volume and the
accompanying exhibition Puppets and the Avantgarde. Picasso - Depero - Klee - Sarzi, curated
by James M. Bradburne - from November 2023 at the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio
Emilia - open up a space for the imagination by tracing the cultural and social role of puppets in
the European avant garde at the beginning of the 20th century. An itinerary that places alongside
the great names of Pablo Picasso, Fortunato Depero and Paul Klee, that of Otello Sarzi, a poetic
figure who marked the artistic and educational history of Reggio Emilia. In order to understand
their appeal, puppets are examined in the broadest sense: puppets operated from above -
common in the palaces of princes and the drawing rooms of the bourgeoisie; and puppets
manipulated from below - inhabitants of the popular world of fairs and the public square.

Nagy Shaker - An Experimental Graphic Artist of the Egyptian Avant-Garde

Khatt Books 2023 ISBN 9789490939281 Acqn 34096
Hb 17x24xm 176pp col ills £35

Nagy Shaker (1932-2018) was an Egyptian design pioneer born in the suburbs of Cairo. He is
one of the most influential figures in the history of modern Egyptian design. He is also considered
the godfather of modern Egyptian puppetry since he introduced the art of puppetry to Egypt, and
his name will forever be connected to this art form. He designed and directed several seminal
performances for the Egyptian Puppet Theater Company. Its most famed is El-Leila el-Kebira
(The Grand Night, 1960). He enriched Egyptian theater and film with outstanding sets and
costume designs. He also worked in editorial design in Cairo in Dar El-Hilal and many others,
until he set up his own multidisciplinary design studio in 1980 and carried out various graphic
design projects for UNICEF and for cinema and publishing houses. His graphic design solutions
instigated a shift in cinema poster design and introduced a modernist approach to editorial
design. Through his teaching and mentorship, he influenced a younger generation of Egyptian
designers who are practicing today. This has contributed to the development of graphic and
three- dimensional design in Egypt and, indirectly, the Arab region. In addition to being a
comprehensive presentation of Nagy Shaker's various design projects, this books presents an
intimate insight into his personality, process and life story, retold in his won words through
interviews interspersed through the book.
