Masahisa Fukase - Private Scenes

Akaaka Art Publishing 2023 ISBN 9784865411676 Acqn 34030
Hb 24x19cm 192pp col ills £48.50
Text in Japanese

'Private Scenes' presents the entire eponymous series for the first time, revealing a new
dimension in the work of Masahisa Fukase (1934-2012): the artist struggling with his medium.
The series is made up of photographs in which the artist inserts himself, comprising two sets:
"Letters from Journeys", with images taken in 1989 in various cities around the world, and
"Private Scenes '92", which focuses on his daily life in Tokyo. In the latter, each print is now
enhanced with colour paints, becoming a unique work. It bears witness to Fukase's questions
about his own practice at the end of his life and the place of the photographer in his work, when
subject and object overlap. Japanese edition.

Yoshihiko Ueda - Always Dream

Akaaka Art Publishing 2023 ISBN 9784865411584 Acqn 34031
Hb 18x26cm 548pp col ills £125

The images appearing in "Always Dream", a photobook by Yoshihiko Ueda, were all shot in
China between 1990 and 2011, while Ueda worked on several advertising campaigns for an
oolong tea made by Japanese beverage giant Suntory. Though the reason for Ueda's presence
in China may have been strictly commercial, the photographs in this book possess a serene
beauty. During his travels around the country, to places like Shanghai, Shenyang, Guilin, and
Dalian, Ueda connected with local people and artists, local street life and urban landscapes, and
nature. Incidental encounters alternate with organised shoots with subjects such as ballet
dancers, workers, and models.

The Spirit of Avant-Garde Photography - Transforming "Nothing Much"

Akaaka Art Publishing 2023 ISBN 9784865411690 Acqn 34056
Pb 19x26cm 240pp col ills £26
Text in Japanese

During the 1930s, a large number of works influenced by surrealism were shown in Japan under
the heading "avant-garde photography". Among these were works by Takiguchi Shuzo (1903-
1979), who soon thereafter founded the Avant-Garde Photography Association along with Abe
Nobuya (1913-1971). Their theoretical approach to the photographic medium would in turn
influence other experimental Japanese artists such as Otsuji Kiyoji (1923-2001) and Gocho
Shigeo (1946-1983). Collectively these artists have made an indelible impact on 20th-century
photography in Japan, which is the subject of this seminal exhibition catalogue on their work and
legacy.

Kanno Jun - Planet Fukushima

Akaaka Art Publishing 2023 ISBN 9784865411621 Acqn 34084
Hb 26x18cm 304pp col ills £67.50

'Planet Fukushima' is a two-part record of the past decade in Jun Kanno's home city in
Fukushima Prefecture. Part one, titled "Fat Fish", focuses on the "temporary storage sites"
installed in 2014 for radioactively polluted material produced after the March 2011 nuclear
catastrophe. Part two, titled "Little Fish", presents photographs of the all locations seen in part
one, but with a Geiger counter in the foreground. Kanno thus weaves together micro and macro,
visible and invisible, future events and past mistakes. Her work not only examines the ongoing
catastrophe in Fukushima from a different perspective but also manages to connect local events
to a wider scale.

Akiyoshi Taniguchi - On Representational Emptiness

Akaaka Art Publishing 2023 ISBN 9784865411706 Acqn 34086
Hb 22x30cm 100pp col ills £34

Akiyoshi Taniguchi is farsighted, so he decided to remove his glasses and immerse himself in a
blurry world to take pictures. Using manual focus, it was impossible for him to tell if the shot was
in focus. Reflected on his retina was scenery that only he could see, so he tried pressing the
shutter while relying on his own five senses. Looking at the finished prints later on, he felt there
was "something reminiscent" of that reflection on the retina. But while that is the fact captured by
the photograph, the question of what was taken is a futile one. Such floating substances are
understood in Buddhist philosophy as Impermanence. In other words, permanent substances do
not exist at all.

Aurelien Mole - 30 mn
Editions Empire 2023 ISBN 9791095991229 Acqn 34087
Hb 17x10cm 116pp col ills £40.50

With two disposable analogue cameras purchased on site, Aurelien Mole spent thirty minutes
documenting a local photography lab, a relic of a bygone era: that of the industrialisation and
popularisation of analogue photography. It took no longer than that to develop and print the two-
colour negative films for this photo report, and to craft this brief introductory text-a little more time
was required, though, for Syndicat to design its ghostly layout, in a book that plays on the
contrast between matte paper and screen-printed varnish.

Carlijn Jacobs - Sleeping Beauty

Note Note Editions 2023 ISBN 9782493467058 Acqn 34036
Hb 22x30cm 176pp col ills £53

Dutch photographer Carlijn Jacobs works with today's leading brands and celebrities, and yet she
manages to keep her images quirky and alienating. 'Sleeping Beauty' is an invitation to the
subconscious. Jacobs transports the spectator to a land of dreams, a fairy tale excursion through
160 hyper-stylised, illusory and surreal images depicting otherworldly creatures amid the
pageantry of a masked ball. Geishas, LED face masks, painted bodies, Venetian carnivals, sheer
wrappings_ glamour is a persistent theme, but there is an edge to the beauty here. Inspired by
both modern and ancient aesthetics, Jacobs demonstrates a fascination with the extreme in her
work.

Feng Li – PIG
Note Note Editions 2023 ISBN 9782493467041 Acqn 34042
Pb 21x26cm 48pp col ills £25.50

'Pig' reveals a more intimate and sensitive aspect of Feng Li's work, chronicling his pig's journey
as it grows into an adult. Here the photographer shares images of he and his wife's expanded
family, which at one time consisted of three cats, a parrot, and a pig that had been abandoned by
its previous owner, all living together in one house. Full of kindness, humour, contentment, and of
course animal antics, the pictures reveal the close relationship that developed between the pig
and its human caretakers. The photobook is an invitation to share their idyllic daily life through
Feng Li's eyes, and the portrayal is tender and ironical in equal measure.

Chinese Shadows - Through a diplomatic lens

Jeu De Paume 2023 ISBN 9782915704983 Acqn 34059
Pb 22x31cm 48pp col ills £11

Published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Chinese Shadows', which brought together a
selection of photographs by Helene Hoppenot and Andre Travert, this portfolio presents a
selection of little-known or unpublished prints from photographic collections belonging to the
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both photographers were connected to the French diplomatic
mission in China. Their work, which covers the period between the 1930s and 1950s, offers a
unique glimpse into the nation and its people. Prior to the advent of communism, Hoppentot
sought out famous monuments and rural landscapes. Travert's images perceptively record the
profound transformations after 1947.

The Mimetic Observer - A Visual Reading on Dante's Divine Comedy

Viaindustriae 2023 ISBN 9788897753933 Acqn 34062
Pb 20x23cm 128pp col ills £33.25

Launched on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death, the project is the
result of a profound analysis and reflection that involved various experts and scholars as well as
photography experts from the ICCD and looks at the world of the Poet in a completely new way: it
focuses on the objects, landscapes and other natural elements that Dante Alighieri deals with in
his major works. The luminous and photographic narrative comes to life through a meticulous
reconstruction of images and optical illusions from the three Canticles, with the aid of early
analogue photographic processes. The works on display have become part of the contemporary
photography collections of the ICCD and are enclosed in a volume named after the exhibition,
published by Viaindustriae Publishing, which is the result of extensive research into typographic
printing materials and techniques.

Massimo Gardone with Alessandra Muran has produced a volume that is many things: a living
and vivid herbarium of nature's colors with elements collected and photographed while still fresh,
but also an evocative photo book capable of enhancing with the eye of the graphic artist the
colors and "pantone" of petals, leaves, branches and other elements of nature. The texts
accompanying this research are an essay by Francesco Messina and reflections by landscape
designer Matteo Lacivita who starts from the naturalistic observation of colors to also talk about
painting, music and other art forms that color really cannot do without.

Thomas Manneke – Zillion

Van Zoetendaal 2023 ISBN 9789072532572 Acqn 34081
Hb 30x40cm 112pp ills £48.50

At his workspace in the centre of Amsterdam, when the afternoon sun is just right, Thomas
Manneke captures still lifes and portraits of his daughter, Laurie, using an 8x10 inch plate
camera. Most photographs in this book were made in collaboration with his daughter. The objects
in the book are made especially to photograph them. Sometimes they are inspired by found
objects, like a small grey stone with whimsical white lines or by a web created by caterpillars.
Some objects were inspired by artworks from the past like the drawings on glass were by Josef
Albers and the folded sculptures of thick paper, or dynamic cut-outs of cardboard were inspired
by photographs of Francis Bruguiere. The book shows the fun of creating things together while
getting inspired by the world around us.
