Rationale:

The early exposure of students to modules related to their profession is an international


trend in pharmacy schools and faculties around the world. This has proven to be a very
effective approach in orienting students’ thinking and study to a more practice related
as opposed to a purely academic way of thinking.

Goals:

• To prepare the student for studying pharmacy.

Objectives:

General objective:

This course is designed to provide students with a survey of the profession of pharmacy
including its history, development, scope of practice, educational requirements, ethical
foundations, regulation, contemporary issues, and career opportunities.

Specific objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify the importance of studying pharmacy and develop rational reasons for
studying this profession.

2. Identify main areas of pharmacy practice.

3. Identify and understand the undergraduate program and its requirements in terms of
content, methods of evaluation, academic standards to be maintained, learning methods
and adherence to ethics and codes of conduct set by the faculty.

4. Identify and appreciate the role of the pharmacist in changing and improving health
care.

5. Identify the historical aspects of pharmacy and how the profession has advanced
throughout its life time.

6. Identify basic concepts of good pharmacy practice.

7. Identify the main laws, regulations and ethics that govern the practice of pharmacy.

8. Identify general rules of over the counter dispensing of drugs.

9. Identify the possible roles of the pharmacist in the community.

10. Identify the main description and components of pharmaceutical care.

11. Identify the current situation of pharmacy in Sudan.

12. Identify the importance of rational drug use.

13. Identify future expected developments in the profession.

14. Identify other healthcare professionals and components of the healthcare system in
Sudan.

15. Identify the importance of proper communication with other healthcare


professionals as well as patients, co-patients and families.

16. Identify social and psychological aspects associated with patient care and working
as part of the healthcare team.

17. Identify the concept of evidence based practice and the main sources of information
used in pharmacy.

18. Identify and understand the meanings of prescription and dispensing.

19. Identify main areas of research in pharmacy

20. Identify the importance of continuous professional development and create a


personal CPD portfolio.

21. Identify medical devices most commonly used by patients.

22. Identify and understand the main reasons behind rational/ or irrational self
medication.

23. Work as part of a team and positively integrate with other team members.

Instruction methods:
• Seminars followed by group discussion.
• Each seminar group will be supervised and facilitated by an academic staff
member.
