Coming to America

"My parent
came to the Status from Ireland in the middle of the 19th century

When the were in Ireland they lived on a farm and grow


their own food . It was a
hard life

because they had no


running
water or
electricity .
They managed to get by until

the terrible potato famine destroyed what little they had Life become even more

difficult. There was no work and people queued up


for free food It soup kitchens .

Many people sterred to death . My parents decided to move to America

where they knew there was food and jobs ·

It log unpleasant journey scross the ocean mother told me

in the lowest desk of a ship with no fresh air , little clean water and often no food .

The only thing that kept them going was the thought of a new life in America .

I was born two years after they arrived .


Now I live in a one-room flat in New York

Luckily ,
we have running water and electricity ! I have s good job .
I work in

contruction and we build the fantastic Skyscrapers you see


shooting up nowsdays .

I get paid at the end of the day and go home to a cooked mea . My wife

makes shirts in a factory Sometimes she does loundry for people to earn extra

money .

is not perfect but it is fer better than the life my pevent led in Ireland .
