EMPower! Master Program for Green Transformation

Government-sponsored students Application Requirements

Objective: This program aims to grow students who will contribute to achieving the global
SDGs by promoting green transformation (GX) under collaboration between Bangladesh
universities and Yamagata University, Japan. Students will be empowered to acquire
abilities to devise new technologies, such as climate tech and those for water environment
conservation and energy efficiency, from multifaceted perspectives in energy, material,
and process. In addition, this program supports building an international network of
colleagues sharing a passion for establishing sustainable societies.

Features: During the two years of the Master's program in the Graduate School of Science
and Engineering, Yamagata University (Department of Mechanical Engineering and
Department of Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering),
students with diverse international backgrounds will learn GX with problem-based
learning (PBL) in group work and work on the realization of new ideas. This PBL program
includes visits to cutting-edge GX-related companies and discussions with pioneering
researchers. The students from Bangladesh are supervised by education teams comprising
of professors of the two departments and supported by a mentor of the graduated
Bangladesh university.

Eligibility: Students, who graduated or are expected to graduate before Oct 2024 from the
following universities, are eligible to apply for this program; Yamagata University,
Rajshahi University, University of Dhaka, Chittagong University, Khulna University,
Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, Jahangirnagar University,
Jagannath University, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Shahjalal
University of Science and Technology and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology
University. This program will offer the Japanese Government Scholarship for four
students from Bangladesh. The four scholars will be selected from candidates
recommended by the ten universities in Bangladesh. The tuition will be exempted, and
the fee for air tickets will be provided.

1. General Application Requirements

The requirements for students who wish to participate in this program are as follows

1.1 Applicants having a bachelor's degree from one of the ten Bangladesh universities
or those who are expected to obtain the degree by the end of September, 2024.
Certificates of graduation or expected graduation from the university must be
submitted.

1.2 Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.3 or higher in their undergraduate
studies, as evidenced by a transcript from the university.

Engineering expertise in mechanical, chemical or biological matters (see below


for examination details).

1.3 Sufficient proficiency in English (speaking, writing, listening, reading, etc.;


details of the examination are described below).

1.4 Have the ability to positively adapt to the Japanese environment and culture.

1.5 In principle, applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1989.

2. Documents required for application

2.1 Copies of degree certificates (university-issued and government-issued


certificates).

2.2 Copy of academic ID card or passport

2.3 An academic transcript showing that the student has a grade point average of 2.3
or higher (a copy is acceptable, but the original must be submitted for the final
examination).

2.4 Application documents designated by Yamagata University (in English)

2.5 Letter of recommendation for application (recommendation of the dean, vice


president, or president)

2.6 Summary of Undergraduate Thesis or similar, not to exceed 2 pages in length, in


English (only for having graduate thesis).

2.7 Transcripts related to TOEFL y/o TOEIC (only for certificate holders)

3. Plan to conduct selection examinations

Deadline for submission of application materials: Dec 20, 2023

A first stage examination by application materials

A first stage examination will be implemented by own university and two students will be

proceeded to a second examination. Selected students must submit the all sheets for
application to Yamagata University by e-mail.

A second stage examination: Jan 31, 2024. 10 am (ONLINE). Prepare your online
environment (ZOOM will be used).

Announcement of the successful applicants of a second stage: Feb 22, 2024, 10 am (A


representative teachers of each university
will be notified successful candidates)
