This procedure describes the allocation of Numbering and Nomenclature to High Voltage Equipment
on the National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) System.
It implements the requirements of STCP 1 0-1 Asset Nomenclature and Grid Code requirement
Operating Code (OC) No. 1 1 "Numbering and Nomenclature of High Voltage Apparatus at Certain
Sites." In that:
shall have numbering and nomenclature in accordance with the system used by NGET.
To ensure, so far as possible, the safe and effective operation of the total Transmission System and to
reduce the risk of human error faults by requiring, in certain circumstances, that the numbering and
nomenclature of Users' HV Equipment shall be in accordance with the numbering system used by
NGET.
PART 1 – PROCEDURAL
1 RESPONSIBILITIES
The Transmission Network Control Centre (TNCC) is responsible for agreeing with other
NGET Business Units the application of the principles of this procedure.
The NGET Business Unit that initiates the modification to the NGET HV system, whether the
modification is substation or Overhead Line (OHL) related, will be responsible for beginning
the process of agreeing the associated numbering and nomenclature. The timing of this
process should be in line with the timescales identified within UKBP_TP500 – Network
Development Process. If the HV system changes are OHL related, the NGET Business
Unit will be responsible for approaching TNCC to address the allocation of any required line
route codes and Circuit Identification Plates (CIP). This allocation will also be with the
agreement of the Area OHL Team Leader.
2 INTRODUCTION
For the purpose of this document, the term Numbering will refer to the number of the
equipment e.g. X1 20.
The term Nomenclature will refer to the equipment identification e.g.400kV Bus Section 1
Circuit Breaker. The term Nomenclature will also apply to all names associated with
Substations, Circuits, and Overhead lines.
The terms Disconnector and Isolator are synonymous. However, for the purpose of this
document the preferred term is Disconnector.
An OHL Route and its towers shall not be numbered or have a CIP such that they could be
readily confused with any other geographically close route or tower. The designation letters
Q, I, and O are not considered appropriate for use.
When NGET HV Equipment is added at a Users Site, the provisions of Grid Code OC 1 1 .4.2
shall be complied with.
When User HV Equipment is added at an NGET Site, the provisions of Grid Code OC 1 1 .4.3
shall be complied with.
Where NGET has a requirement to change the existing numbering or nomenclature of NGET
HV Equipment on a User's Site, or there is a requirement for a change to the existing
numbering or nomenclature on Users HV Equipment at a NGET Site the provisions of Grid
Code OC 1 1 .4.4 shall be complied with.
Upon request Users will be provided the details of NGET’s current numbering and
nomenclature system to assist them in planning the numbering and nomenclature for their
HV Equipment on NGET Sites.
7 LABELLING
When either NGET or a User installs HV Equipment the respective Party shall be
responsible for the provision and erection of clear and unambiguous labelling showing the
numbering and nomenclature. Where either Party is required to change the numbering
and/or nomenclature of existing HV equipment, they will be responsible for the erection of
clear and unambiguous labelling showing the new numbering and nomenclature.
NGET will not change its standard system of numbering and nomenclature defined within
this document. For non-standard designs, reference should be made to section A20.
It is not intended that any of the requirements of this document be applied retrospectively,
except where safety implications justify the necessary expenditure.
Not applicable.
10 DEFINITIONS
10.2 User
A term utilised in various sections of the Grid Code to refer to the persons using the National
Electricity Transmission System, as more particularly identified in each section of the Grid
Code concerned. In the Preface and General Conditions the term means any person to
whom the Grid Code applies.
In England and Wales, a site owned (or occupied pursuant to a lease, licence or other
agreement) by a User in which there is a Connection Point. For the avoidance of doubt, a
site owned by NGET but occupied by a User as aforesaid, is a User Site.
A site owned (or occupied pursuant to a lease, licence or other agreement) by NGET in
which there is a Connection Point. For the avoidance of doubt, where a Site is owned by a
User but occupied by NGET, the site is an NGET Site.
A system consisting (wholly or mainly) of high voltage electric lines owned or operated by an
Offshore Transmission Licensee and used for the transmission of electricity from one Power
Station to a sub-station or to another Power Station or between sub-stations, and includes
any Plant and Apparatus and meters owned or operated by any Offshore Transmission
Licensee in connection with the transmission of electricity but does not include any Remote
Transmission Assets. An Offshore Transmission System extends from the Interface Point, to
the Offshore Grid Entry Point(s) and may include Plant and Apparatus located Onshore and
Offshore.
This process applies to NGESO and each TO and describes the process required to ensure
that the relevant numbering and nomenclature standards are implemented on Transmission
Sites and User Sites and to ensure that NGESO can discharge its responsibilities under the
Grid Code OC 1 1

A1 NAMING OF SUBSTATIONS
A1 .1 NGET Substations
Substation names shall be nominated by NGET who will consult with and agree the
proposed names with NGESO. Four letter Substation codes are allocated by NGESO.
No substation shall be given the same name as that of any other NGET substation or User
Site on the system unless it is located on the same site as an existing NGET substation or
User Site.
No substation shall be given a name that could be readily confused with the name of any
other substation or User Site on the system.
Where circumstances dictate that a NGET site needs to assume the name of an existing
substation or User site, or a name that could readily be confused with an existing substation
or User site, NGET will consult and agree the necessary adjustment of names with NGESO
and the relevant User.
Where two or more substations are located geographically close together they may be
named independently or given the same name with equipment numbered such there is no
duplication.
User site names shall be nominated by such User, who will consult on and agree the name
to be adopted with NGET and NGESO.
No User site shall be given the same name, or one that could readily be confused with, that
of any other User site or substation on the system unless it is located on the same site
footprint as an existing User site.
Where circumstances dictate that a User Site needs to assume the name of an existing
substation or User site, or a name that could readily be confused with an existing substation
or User site, NGET will consult and agree the necessary adjustment of names with NGESO
and the relevant User.
If a substation of the same voltage is being extended or replaced at the same location, then
the new substation will, where practicable, take the same name as the existing one. The
duplication of numbering / nomenclature on the equipment shall be avoided and this will be
achieved by either;
· sequencing the busbars within the new substation from the existing ones; i.e. MB B 3
and MBB4 where MBB1 and MBB2 already exist.
· rename the existing busbars from MBB1 and MBB2 to MBB3 and MBB4 then use
MBB1 and MBB2 at the new substation.
The same rationale will apply to Bus Sections, Bus Couplers and Circuit Bays.
Traction supply points are sites where National Grid connect to a railway network ATFS
(Auxiliary Trackside Feeder Station) via a Feeder circuit.
Further to the requirements of Section A6 for all transformers to be uniquely numbered and
Section A7 for reactors, compensators and boosters to be uniquely numbered, the following
will apply:
a) Where the above installations are associated with an even numbered busbar section,
then an even numbered sequence shall be used. The same principle will be adopted
for odd numbered busbars.
b) Where there is a single busbar section within a substation, this will be numbered Main
Busbar 1 , Reserve Busbar 1 . If the site is designed to be extended from the centre
with use of a Bus Section, then one side will adopt odd numbering with the lower
number at the centre and even on the other side.
c) Where the above installation is connected to the system via a static compensator
transformer, then the circuit numbering will follow the sequence that is used for other
transformer circuits.
d) Where the next number in sequence could lead to confusion or ambiguity with
adjacent equipment, the following number in sequence should be used.
Sequence numbering that could lead to ambiguity at substations of different voltage on the
same complex should be avoided. For example, if MSC 1 exists at a 400kV location then it
shall not be used at the 1 32kV location. Instead the MSC will be suffixed with a different
number.
When extensions to existing substations are undertaken, the existing number sequencing
should be reviewed but only altered where reasonably practicable.
A3 IDENTIFICATION OF CIRCUITS
A3.1 The identification of circuits connecting substations at different named sites will be proposed
by NGET who will consult with and agree the names with NGESO. The identification shall
be as follows:-
A circuit connecting two substations shall be designated by the names of the substations
concerned in alphabetical order of sites.
Parallel circuits between the same substations shall be suffixed with a unique
sequence number.
A3.2 A circuit connecting busbars of the same voltage at the same named complex or a circuit
connecting busbars of the same voltage at a particular substation shall be designated as
follows:
· Bus Connector
· A sequence number
The exception to this numbering is when the Bus Connector connects to a Mesh Corner. In
this case the suffixed number will be the same as the Mesh Corner number.
When additional towers are being added to an existing route the following shall apply;
If a temporary tower is being built to facilitate a tower replacement then it will take the same
identification as the tower its replacing and be suffixed with the letter T for (Temporary)
If a tower or run of towers is being added to facilitate a small, double circuit diversion then an
existing tower number shall be taken and suffixed with sequenced letters. The original tower
number taken will also be included in the suffixed letter sequence.
If a tower or run of towers is being added to facilitate a small double circuit diversion that is
being split onto two separate single tower spans for the diversion, then an existing tower
number shall be taken and suffixed with sequenced letters for one of spans and another
tower number shall be taken and suffixed with sequenced numbers for the other span. In
both cases the original tower number taken will also be included in the suffixed letter
sequence.
For larger circuit diversions consideration will be given to adding a new route code into the
circuit and sequencing the towers accordingly.
For major scheme works that require OHL reconfigurations; if the tower numbering is
significantly out of sequence then consideration should be given to re-sequencing the towers
into a standard format. See Diagram 9
All Towers shall be fitted with a Circuit Identification Plate and Flag Bracket.
Irrespective of whether a circuit connects into a substation or by-passes it, when a circuit
passes a Substation, the Circuit Identification Plate (CIP) and Flag Bracket on the Towers
should change. This allows three-ended circuits to be split into legs with no potential
duplication of CIP or Flag Bracket thus avoiding safety issues. It also allows for future OHL
reconfiguration and substation turn-in to take place without bearing the cost and effort of
changing the affected CIP and Flag brackets on any affected towers. It is not intended for
this to be retrospectively applied.
See Diagram 9
Circuit Identification colours and route codes are allocated from the TNCC after agreement
with Operations - Over Head Lines.
The circuit will be suffixed with the same sequence number of the Supergrid Transformer
circuit that it connects to. If the SGT is number 1 then the circuit will carry the suffix 1
through to the ATFS. If the SGT is number 3B then the circuit will carry the suffix 3B through
to the ATFS.
The SGT circuit will be labelled SGT (suffixed with the appropriate number) from the busbar
disconnectors on the HV side up to and including the SGT LV line disconnector. It will then
be labelled a Feeder (suffixed with the appropriate number) from the disconnector to the
ATFS. From the ATFS it will be a Feeder circuit (suffixed with the appropriate number) up to
the SGT LV line disconnector in the National Grid substation.
Where Offshore Transmission circuits connect into a NGET substation at the busbars, the
circuit name will be agreed between NGET and NGESO. This will normally be the name of
the Offshore transmission substation. The numbering assigned to the circuit will be feeder
based.
e.g. the West of Duddon Sands 1 circuit at Heysham would be labelled West of Duddon
Sands 1 and carry numbering X*04, X*06, X*05 etc)
A4 IDENTIFICATION OF BUSBARS
The first section of Busbar in a substation will be Busbar 1 , the next section will be Busbar 2.
Any further Busbar sections added will be sequenced out in following way
Extensions to Busbar section 1 will be come Busbar section 3, Busbar section 5 etc…
Extensions to Busbar section 2 will be come Busbar section 4, Busbar section 6 etc…
See Diagram 2
In the case of substations where a section of one busbar is common to two sections of an
associated busbar, the former shall bear the numbers of both corresponding sections of the
latter.
In the case of a mesh type substation the corners of the mesh should be numbered
consecutively in an anti-clockwise direction when viewed from above.
See Diagram 3

A16.2 Where switchgear used for shorting/discharge functions as a fully rated earth switch or
maintenance earth on all phases at all points of application then it should be numbered as
an earth switch or maintenance earth as appropriate. In all other cases the following
numbering shall be applied:
· The third part shall be the circuit sub-division reference as used on a banked circuit
where appropriate.
· The fourth part shall be used, where necessary, for the numbering sequence for
switchgear which would otherwise bear the same number.
A17.1 Where more than one earthing switch qualifies for a particular number, then the number shall
be suffixed by unique letters as detailed in A1 0.4, see Diagram 2
For a substation with no Bus Section the numbering of the earth switches will start at the
side of the substation where the circuit bay sequencing begins and sequence along the
busbar.
For a substation with Bus Sections, the numbering of the earth switches will start at the Bus
Section disconnector (where there are two disconnectors it will start at the disconnector with
the highest number, e.g. X1 28) and sequence through the Bus Section and along the
Section 1 busbar. The earth switches on Section 2 busbar will start adjacent the Bus
Section disconnector and sequence away from the Bus Section along Section 2 busbar. See
Diagrams 2 and 3
A17.2 Where equipment is used which can perform the duties of both a disconnector and earth
switch then the earthing device should be identified as the disconnector followed by ED.
e.g. X101R
X101AR
A17.4 Where Fixed Maintenance Earthing Devices (i.e earthing equipment applied phase by
phase) is installed, it shall be designated 'as follows:
· The letter F
Where there are more than one Fixed Maintenance Earthing Devices then the following will
apply
e.g. more than one Fixed Maintenance Earthing device associated with Overhead
Line Circuit 2
F20A, F20B etc
If the circuit has banked connections, the last letter will denote the bank and a consecutive
number, starting at 1 , will be added to the end.
e.g. Fixed Maintenance Earthing devices associated with a banked Transformer, SGT 3A
F31 A1 and F31 A2 etc
A18.1 Switchgear
The nomenclature of neutral earthing switchgear shall be the designation and number of the
associated equipment followed by the words NEUTRAL EARTHING SWITCH.
The numbering of neutral earthing switchgear, except in the case of common neutral
earthing switchgear, shall be the letter 'N' followed by a sequence number.
a) The first part shall be a letter to denote the type of circuit with which the switchgear is
associated as given below:-
M -Generator
T -Transformer
P -Petersen Coil
S -Section
c) The third part shall be the letter N to denote the neutral earthing function.
d) The fourth part shall be a sequence number, zero being reserved for neutral circuit
breakers.
A18.2 Resistors
The nomenclature of neutral earthing resistors shall be the designation and number of its
associated equipment followed by the words NEUTRAL EARTHING RESISTOR.
Where the neutral earthing resistor is common to more than one item of equipment it shall be
designated COMMON NEUTRAL EARTHING RESISTOR followed where appropriate by a
unique sequence number.
The implementation of the information given above under the heading "Neutral Earthing
Switchgear" is illustrated in Diagram 5.
The purpose of this section is to set out the principle for identification of gas zones to be
used at all gas-insulated switchgear substations. This will assist persons at the local and
remote substation operating points to clearly relate gas zones to the electrical configuration
of the switchgear, and to identify zones of work.
This guidance applies to all new substations at which NGET own the busbars. At
substations where individual bays are owned by other parties (e.g. a DNO) this system is to
be applied by agreement to all bays to ensure consistency. At substations where NGET
does not own the busbars, agreement should be sought with the other parties involved to
have this system applied to the entire substation.
A1 9.1 .1 Busbars
On double busbar equipment the gas zone number shall be in two parts:
a) For double busbar equipment main and reserve busbars shall use the designations
MBB and RBB respectively, followed by the section number, e.g. MBB1 , RBB3, etc.
The complete gas zone number shall combine these designations, e.g. MBB1 G3,
RBB3G04, etc. On single busbar equipment the designation for the busbar shall be BB.
For Section 1 the sequence of numbering shall start from the bus section. For other sections
the sequence numbering of gas zones shall be in the same direction as the numbering of the
busbar sections. This numbering convention will not apply to any busbar compartments that
contain switching devices other than earthing switches.
The numbering convention for compartments containing busbar voltage transformers shall
combine the busbar section number, the VT number, and G1 , i.e. MBB1 VT1 G1 .
A19.2.1 Gas zones which contain identified equipment i.e. circuit breaker, disconnector or voltage
transformer
The first part of the gas zone number shall be the identification number of the principle item
of equipment. The second part shall be the designation G1 . Where a gas zone contains
more than one item of equipment, including at least one disconnector or circuit breaker, the
gas zone number shall include the designations of all disconnectors and circuit breakers. No
other items of equipment will be included in the gas zone number. Where the designations
include a common bay reference this may be omitted from the designation of the second
device, i.e. a zone containing disconnectors 1 1 04B and 1 1 06B would be designated
1 1 04B/06BG1 .
At the junction of a busbar with a circuit, the compartment containing the busbar
disconnector shall be identified using the disconnector number, e.g. 1 04G1 , even if the zone
includes a section of busbar.
Voltage transformers shall be assigned a designation in the form NNNVTnG1 , where NNN
represents the switching device most closely associated with the VT, and n is a sequence
number.
A19.2.2 Gas zones which do not contain any identified equipment (other than an earthing switch)
The identification of these zones shall follow the form NNNGn (as directed above for voltage
transformers), comprising:
a) The most closely associated switching device. Compartments on the circuit breaker
side of a disconnector shall use the circuit breaker number. Compartments on the line
side of a disconnector shall use the disconnector number.
b) A gas zone identification sequence number, starting with G2. The sequence shall
start from:
(ii) The lower numbered section of busbar (for bus section bays).
A19.3 Labelling
Designs not directly covered within this procedure or new types of HV apparatus outside the
scope of the existing NGET numbering and nomenclature standard shall be named in
accordance with numbering and nomenclature rules agreed between NGET and NGESO.
A21 .1 Where equipment is used which can perform the duties of both circuit breaker and
disconnector, the device shall be designated as a Disconnecting Circuit Breaker.
A21.2 The numbering of disconnecting circuit breakers shall be the number of the respective circuit
breaker followed by DCB.
e.g. disconnecting circuit breaker associated with a 400kV transformer (HV side), X1 1 0DCB
A22 ABBREVIATIONS
To achieve a level of consistency the following abbreviations can be used for the various
plant items. Where the use of abbreviations could cause confusion e.g. safety related
documents, their use should be limited.
