1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to provide an understanding of how to decide and assign a berth
position for a vessel and number of bollards to be used. By the end of this document user will be
able to understand the importance of choosing correctly a berth and its impact on Quay
Productivity, besides that user will have a clear idea assigning the correct bollards for mooring a
vessel.
2. SCOPE
Explaining important aspects to be considered for assigning berth position and bollards having in
mind important operation aspects in order to optimize Quay utilization and improve its productivity.

4. GENERAL CONDITIONS
4.1 Introduction
It is really important for a Container Terminal to optimize Quay utilization and keep a high
productivity in order to offer a good service to Shipping Lines, reducing costs of equipment &
workforce. It will also help vessels to arrive next port call on time.
Availability: first of all Berth Planner has to check if Vessel`s ETA is between windows
service schedule, in case it is not, Berth Planner has to revise berth conflicts prioritization in
order to offer an ETB to Shipping Line Agent.
Load cargo/Stacks` free space: in order to reduce the staying of the vessel and increase
Quay productivity the berth position (Berth1 or Berth2) to be assigned, has to be as closer
as possible from the Load cargo referenced for that vessel and also to have in mind that
stacks have enough free space for receiving the number of discharging boxes. It will help
that SHC spend less time taking boxes to QC`s. and QC`s will be able to accomplish the
KPI`s moves per hour.
Safety distance; when calculating bollards to be used and assigned for the Vessel, Berth
Planner must consider a safety distance of 25 meters between 2 vessels (this distance has
been established by Harbor Master/API. However APMT is negotiating to reduce it for
having more Quay site meters to be used).
Long/Spring Lines: a proper mooring offers the vessel a good stability, which also helps
avoiding incidents/damages when loading/discharging boxes on deck. That is why Berth
Planner also has to consider bollards for mooring long/spring lines always focusing on
Safety.
Aspects to consider:
18 meters away from FWD for mooring long lines.
18 meters Safety distance between 2 vessels.
Vessels LOA
1
Formula:
18m + Vessel`s LOA + 25m = Meters to be used
18m + 342m + 18m = 392m
