Duas for Studies

Duas for Studies

Exams are like a monster that knocks our doors in the nights. People have trouble
studying because they feel nervous, which makes them unable to concentrate or
memorize.
Allah gives us a great key that can solve any problem; yes, you guessed right, it's Dua.
We ask our creator to help us by speaking to him in a beautiful way called Dua.
Some great ways to memorization and studying are to organize our tasks and to have a
timetable for it; also, we shouldn't forget that hard work makes every impossible target
achievable.
Here is a list of Duas:

Increase me in knowledge
"My Lord! Increase me in knowledge."
[Qur'an, 20:114]

Ease for me my task

Supplication of Musa alaihi salaam after he was commanded by Allah to go to Firaun
and give da'wah to him.
"My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance] And ease for me my task and untie
the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech."
[Qur'an, 20:25-28]

I ask You for beneficial knowledge

"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds."
[ibn Majah]
We have no knowledge except what You have taught us
After Allah taught Adam the names of things, He asked the angels to name them. The
angels said:
"Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is
You who is the Knowing, the Wise." [Qur'an, 2:32]

Make me comprehend the Religion

"O Allah, make me comprehend the Religion." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

O Allah, make things easy

"O Allah, there is no ease except in that which You have made easy, and You make the
difficulty, if You wish, easy."
[Sahih]

I seek refuge
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that is not humble, a soul that is not satisfied,
knowledge that is of no benefit and a supplication that is not answered."
[Sunan an-Nasa'i]

Duas for Depression, Anxiety & Sorrow

Depression and anxiety are serious conditions and may lead to severe health problems
and even death from suicide. Every day we want to wake up to a happy and joyful day,
but life can pose several challenges and can put us in some unbearable situations
which can lead to depression, sadness, and anxiety. Islam makes the solution to this
problem easy. As Muslims, we know that Dua is the key to everything. Allah always
wants us to ask Him for what we want; He loves it when we call Him, beg Him, and ask
Him; He is near to us and responds to our call.

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah),
Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and
will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not." [Abu Dawud].

taught anyone of Your creation or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen

the Magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heaven and the earth,
and the Lord of the Edifying Throne." [Al-Bukhari]

Dua #9

Narrated by Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬
said, "If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials."
Great reward is associated with trials and calamities. With every problem and difficulty,
there comes an opportunity for great reward if borne with patience.

Supplications for the Oppressed

In honor of the global qiyam (night prayer and supplication) being held tonight in many
Muslims communities in the United States and worldwide for the people of Syria, I
thought to share some of the following supplications. These are prayers for the
oppressed that can be used tonight and at all times for our brothers and sisters in the
deepest of oppression and difficulty the world over. May Allah help them and relieve
them of their suffering, Ameen.

'Allahumma aslih ummata Muhammad. Allahumma farrij `an ummati Muhammad.
Allahumma Rham ummata Muhammad [salla Allahu `alayhi wa sallam.]

O Allah, improve the state of the ummah (community) of Muhammad. O Allah, grant
ease to the ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, have mercy on the ummah of Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him.)
Allahumma farrij hamm al-mahmumeen min al-muslimeen.
O Allah, grant relief and ease to the distressed from the Muslims. Ameen.

Allahumma, farrij 'an Suriya.

O Allah, grant relief and ease to Syria. Ameen.
O Lord, by holding on to Your most gracious rope,
We bind it to our faith, and knot it to our hope.

So stand for us today, don't counter what we try,

Forsake us not, O Lord, the blinking of an eye.

We're powerless to stop this onslaught of their force,

Or strategize to benefit our country's course.

We seek no good except what flows from Your wide door

And yearn for grace that comes from Your unending more.
From The Prayer of the Oppressed by Imam Muhammad al-Dar'i

May Allah accept your and our supplications and prayers, Ameen.

Duas for Calamities and in Times of

Distress
Dua is a simple yet extremely powerful tool that Muslims have. It is an essential act of
worship that can be done at any time, as Allah (SubhanahuwaTa'ala) loves His slave
who asks Him. Dua is the most potent weapon of a believer. Dua should be the first
thing that comes to our minds when calamity strikes, but unfortunately, we think about
all the medicines and people that can help us before turning to Allah. In addition to
making Dua, reading Quran has a calming effect on our hearts, mind, and bodies. Doing
Istighfar 70-100 times a day can help us ward off difficulties and calamities.
In addition to our daily Duas, listed below is a list of Duas that one can make at the time
of distress and calamity:

What Does the Quran Say About Other Religions?

Islam & COVID-19

Wise Words from Imam Shafi'i

No sadness lasts forever, nor any felicity

Nor any state of poverty or one of luxury.

If you are the owner of a heart that is content

Then you and one who owns the whole world are equal.

— Imam Al-Shafi‘i

Note: The Arabic quote above is written in Maghribi style script, which actually writes
the Qaf (‫ )ق‬with one dot on top and the Fa (‫ )ف‬with a dot on the bottom! This was a
relatively common practice with this older style script, and can even be found in the
Quranic calligraphy on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

Here is another example of this type of script, vs. the standardized Arabic script we are
more familiar with in modern times using a passage from Surat al-Baqarah. Can you
read both styles?
The Blessings of Friday
Friday is a special day for Muslims and there are many blessings associated to it. We have
gathered here a few ahadeeth (prophetic narrations) and ayaat (verses) from the Quran that
highlight some of the many blessings of Friday in Islam.

1. Friday is the best of days. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him said,

"Friday is the best of days. It was on this day that Prophet Adam was created, it was on
this day that he was granted entry into Paradise, it was on this day that he was
removed from Paradise (which became the cause for man's existence in this universe,
and which is a great blessing)" (Sahih Muslim)

2. On Friday is a blessed hour in which supplications are sure to be accepted. The

Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
"There is such an hour on Friday that if any Muslim prays, and then asks Allah for some
good in it, his supplication will surely be accepted." (Al-Bukhari)

3. It is a smaller 'Eid' (day of celebration) as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon
him) said,
"Indeed this day is an Eid that Allah made for the Muslims; so whoever among you
comes upon Friday should wash themselves (perform ghusl)...." (Ibn Majah)

4. It is a virtuous day on which to die; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

"No Muslim passes away on the day or night of Jumu'ah except Allah protects them
from the punishment of the grave" (Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi)

5. There is a whole Surah in the Quran named "Al-Jumu'ah", which is the Arabic word
for Friday. In this Surah, Allah SWT says,
"O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of
Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is
better for you, if you only knew. (9) And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse
within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you
may succeed." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, 62:9-10 - Translation: Saheeh International)

Jumu'ah Mubarakah - Happy & Blessed Friday! :)

5 Ways to Pray 5 Times a Day

When we think about pillars, we think of the structure that supports a building or a
monument. Our understanding and our approach to the pillars of Islam should be no
different. Each pillar comes together to provide a structure that holds up our imaan, and
shoulders our struggles of this life in many ways.
Of the five pillars the one that we engage with most regularly is prayer. How we manage
it is therefore essential to our daily (and subsequently weekly, monthly, yearly) imaan
levels. Here are 5 ways we can build a consistent and quality prayer habit.

1. Plan your day around prayer, not

prayer around your day
In today's day and age, where everything is so fast paced, it is extremely easy to get
caught up in a web of activities and lose track of time. Thankfully, we have a good idea
of exactly what time the five calls to prayer are each day, and once we can figure out a
way to schedule our day's tasks around our prayers, then you are setting yourself up for
success. No missed prayers, and a guaranteed reset and refocusing period is built in to
your day. Whether it's a meeting, appointments kids activities, house chores, most of
these tasks can be scheduled with prayer in mind. Put Allah first.

2. Pick a spot or two in the home for

consistency
When you have a dedicated corner or area of the house that you pray in, it can aid in
maintaining the consistency. You aren't trying to find a spot to pray, you know where it
is, and when it's time that's where you go. It also lets everyone else in the house take it
as such and can often aid you in praying together (which is #3).
3. Pray together when you can
Pray with family members when you can. Not only does it mean greater reward for your
prayer, but it is a great act for the family to do together. As the saying goes, "the family
that prays together, stays together". We often get so caught up in our day-to-day, that
we don't spend quality time to connect with those we share a roof with. Those moments
in prayer together and those that follow can be truly blessed for all in re-centering as a
family. It is also great time to share reminders and cultivate that habit in children, as
they see parents and elders doing it together.

4. Make an effort to pray as early as

possible
Praying as early as possible is highly encouraged act.1Building this into your daily plan.
Praying as early as possible eliminates the possibility of missed or rushed prayers. It
gives you a window to work in for the days when things may not go according to plan,
plus you get the reward for a consistent effort and the intention to maintain one
(whenever possible).

5. Build your Quran & Dua

Repository
One of the things we all face with prayer, is a lack of concentration. When you couple
that with the fact that it is such an oft-repeated act, it may be reduced to motions. In
order to sustain a higher level of focus and connection in your prayer, learn some new
duas that you can recite in various positions in prayer. Learn new surahs to make sure
you are working from a larger repository for your actual Quran recitation. Not reciting
the same surahs means you have to focus and lends to a sweeter prayer experience.
These are just some of several ways we can build and sustain a good prayer habit in
our days. What are some of the ways you do so? Share your ideas below!

beginning of its time" (Bukhari)

A Look at The Muslim’s Burial

As Muslims we pride ourselves in belonging to a belief system that speaks on all
aspects of our lives. From the etiquette of dealing with a newborn to the rulings on
different types of transactions. One part of this all-encompassing system is how to deal
with the body of a person who passes on from this life. Muslims are required to wash
the body of a deceased Muslim after their passing and this may be something most of
us are never exposed to, right up until one of our loved ones pass away. Therefore, it is
a good idea to familiarize one's self before it falls on our shoulders unexpectedly.
Additionally, washing the bodies of the deceased is a great service to your community
and a sobering activity for your own spiritual state. It is one of the few times one can see
death so up close and the Prophet s. encouraged us to remember death often. It helps
us to keep the end goal in mind, which is to leave this world in a state of submission to
Allah, pleasing to him and pleased with Him.
How to wash the body of a deceased Muslim:

Somethings To Note
1.Washing is a communal obligation and if someone is doing it, then no one is sinful for
it not being done
2.Who is allowed to wash?
~You are allowed to stipulate who should wash your body when you pass
~But generally 1-3 people from the same sex should wash the body of the deceased
3.When should it be done?
~As soon as is possible. Rules and regulations aside, it is best to wash and bury the
body of the deceased sooner rather than later.
4.One must be gentle and respectful with the body of the deceased
~Hadith of Aisha reported in Abu Dawood (3207): Breaking the bones of a dead
person is just like breaking his bones while he was alive

Before You Begin

1.Where is it done?
~There are Muslim funeral homes with the appropriate facilities, but generally
speaking it should be a small room where it would be acceptable
2.Special care should be taken to not expose the awrah of the deceased
~One or two people should hold a towel over the awrah of the deceased while the
remaining people undresses the deceased
~A disposable towel should always be placed over the area from the navel to the
knee.
3.Wear thick gloves or something appropriate to cover your hands
~First this is to avoid touching waste
~Second this is so you feel as little of the body as it would be strange
Handling the Body
1.A cloth or band should be used to 'tie' the mouth
~This is to hold the mouth closed and keep from anything getting inside
~It should be tied softly, so as not to leave a mark after untying
2.The joints should be loosened by rotating them gently a few times. Care should be
taken not to expose the awrah or apply excessive force.

The Washing
1. First, the body should be sat up and the stomach pressed gently a few times to force
any of the remaining waste from the stomach and intestines.
2.Then the private parts should be washed as thoroughly as possible without being
rough with the body of the deceased
~One person can hold the towel in place while the other uses the appropriate tools,
like a hand held bidet, to spray and wipe the privates thoroughly but gently.
3.Next, the wudhu should be performed on the deceased, like one would normally
perform the wudhu
~Each part can be washed once or 3 times. If there is something on the body that
requires more cleaning, it can be cleaned more than 3 times.
~Exception for performing the wudhu is to not rinse the nose or mouth like one would
normally do while performing wudhu
4.After the wudhu, the rest of the body should be washed with some sort of gentle soap,
starting with the right side.
~Again, it is preferable to wash the body an odd number of times.
~The last time the body is washed it can be scented, as per the sunnah.
~Camphor was used in the past because it would leave a nice scent and repel
insects from eating the body for some time, delaying the inevitable decay
~If some filth comes out of the deceased during the washing you may redo the
washing or just wash the area where it came from
~Recognize that the deceased body will not be as clean or purified of dirt and filth as
one would normally aim for while living.

The Grooming
1.If the nails are overgrown, they should be cut, gently. And for the male an overgrown
mustache should be trimmed or shaved, carefully.
~The skin of the deceased is less pliable than the living so shaving or handling
roughly can tear the skin. If the mustache or nails are not overgrown then they should
be left alone
2.The hair of the male can be left uncombed because the hair and skin of the scalp is
brittle. For the female, you gently tie or braid the hair
~Hadith of Umm Atiyyah in Sahih Bukhari (345): We braided Zaynab's hair in 3 braids
and made them fall at her back.
3.It is recommended to take a shower, ghusl, after washing the body of the deceased

The Shrouding
1.The man is shrouded with 3 pieces of plain cloth the woman is shrouded in 5 pieces of
plain cloth if the resources permit
~It is strongly recommended to use white cloth
~There is no need and it is generally discouraged to use fancy or extravagant cloth
2.Before beginning to wrap the shrouding, some cloth should be used to wrap the
private orifices of the deceased
~Imagine the wrapping of a sumo wrestler, but not as intricate
3.You should begin wrapping the shroud from the right and after the first cloth is
wrapped, the disposable towel covering the awrah of the deceased should be removed
~Recognize that the awrah might become exposed at times during the whole process,
but the utmost effort should be made to keep it covered to protect the privacy of the
deceased. And one should never tell others what they saw of the deceased body,
especially from the awrah
4.After all 3 or 5 layers are wrapped, twist the ends together at the top of the head and
the feet, and loosely tie a piece of cloth or rope around the middle to hold the shroud in
place.
I hope that this has been a clarifying look at what happens with the body of a deceased
Muslim. The whole process may seem so removed from the spiritual reality that the
deceased person's soul has moved on from this world and their reckoning has already
begun. This is the same sentiment when sometimes we see the earthly and somewhat
messy process of a burial at the cemetery. This is a fitting analogy of the nature of this
life. Whatever occurs in this 'world' will be tainted and weighed down by its imperfect
character. All good in this life will have some imperfection in it. The bad we may
experience in this life is not all encompassing. And all of it is temporary.
May Allah grant us a good ending in this life and raise us in the ranks of the righteous
on the Day of Accounting.

Why Do We Say Bismillah?
Basmalah' or 'Bismillah' is a phrase to mention God (Allah) before beginning any action
or speech. It is a powerful phrase that completes our actions and adds immense reward
and Barakah to everything that follows it.
By saying, 'Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem' ‫( الَّر ِحْي ِم الَّر ْح ٰم ِن ِهللا ِبْس ِم‬meaning, "In the Name of
Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful."), you are consciously asking Allah to be with you
during the task, speech or action that you are about to perform.
Imagine having a difficult task or exam ahead of you and you are unprepared or simply
nervous; who do you call or ask for help? None other than The Most Powerful, The Most
High, Allah. Imagine, the task gets easy and you get an immense reward and extreme
barakah.
There are numerous benefits of saying 'Bismillah.'

Wards Away Satan

Saying Bismillah wards away our worst enemy, Satan (Shaitan), who is constantly trying
to distract us from doing good deeds.

Before Reading Quran

The first words revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬were, "Read, in the
Name of Your Lord…." (Quran 96:1). This shows the ultimate importance of beginning
any major or minor task with Allah's name. All Quranic chapters, except one, begin with
Bismillah.

Barakah
Starting things with Bismillah improves productivity, wards away laziness, provides
blessings and is a source of Barakah in all acts.

Before Eating
Aishah [R] related that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "When one of you eats
food, then let him say: 'Bismillah.' If he forgets in the beginning, then let him say:
'Bismillah Fi Awwalihi Wa Akhirih (In the Name of Allah in its beginning and its end.)"
[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1858]
A simple act, such as eating becomes a source of blessing (by the permission of Allah)
and an act of worship.
Following the Sunnah
Duas for entering and leaving the house, dua for calamities, dua for safety and
protection and numerous others have been reported with having Bismillah at the
beginning or having Bismillah in them. Saying Bismillah completes an important Sunnah
of our beloved Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬.

Written on a grave:
Oh who is standing at my grave!
Don't be amazed by my situation!
Yesterday, I was like you!
And Tomorrow, you will be like me!

An Attitude of Gratitude
Allah promises us in this verse that if we express shukr - gratitude, appreciation and thanks for
what we have been given - He will most certainly increase us in blessings. Notice the use of lam
al-qasam here, as well as nun at-tawkeed - both linguistic methods of emphasizing the certainty
and absoluteness of the truth of a statement. Allah is assuring us that this increase will definitely
happen, if only we are grateful.

How can we show shukr? The scholars mention three ways:

1. Shukr of the heart, by understanding that one's blessings are from God alone and it is
to Him we must be thankful;
2. Shukr of the tongue, by celebrating the praises of Allah, and saying many words of
thanks and gratitude, such as "Alhamdulillah."
3. Shukr of the limbs, by using our external senses to do good with the blessings we
have been given, and to use our blessings in the right way.
May Allah bless us with an attitude of gratitude and be of those whom He increases!
Ameen.
