MGMT 2605: Working with Data

Capstone 2
Liam Pankratz

Question 1: Identify the relevant table to create a visualization of the changes in rent across
provinces and major cities in Canada. Prepare this data and visualize the 20 CMAs that have seen
the highest increase in rent for two-bedroom apartments between 2021 and 2022. Which province(s)
did the CMAs with the highest growth belong to? Does it make sense to describe Halifax as an
outlier?

I used the table from the data given to get the rent prices for two-bedroom apartment across major
cities in Canada. I showed the CMA with the prices from 2021 and 2022. From this I can conclude that
Ottawa Gatineau CMA had the largest increase in price. Mostly they are all in a pretty similar range so I
don’t think it makes sense for Halifax to be an outlier.

Question 2: Prepare your data and create a visualization that compares the 2022 average rent of
two bedrooms of Halifax CMA, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo CMA, Saskatoon CMA, Victoria
CMA, Toronto CMA and Montreal CMA. Of these cities, which has the highest rent? How does
Halifax compare to these other cities?

Well from what we can see Toronto has the highest rent coming in with whopping 1779. Halifax is in 4th
which isn’t bad for this list but compared to the rest of the country its quite expensive.

Question 3: Identify the table to compare rental prices of apartments for the various regions of
Halifax. Visualize the 2022 prices of 1 Bedroom, 2 Bedroom and 3 Bedroom + apartments for each of
the regions identified in the data set. Which region is the most expensive? Based on your personal
knowledge or what you can find about the geography of Halifax, why do you think this region is the
most expensive?

Visualizing the Halifax area, we can see that the most expensive area is peninsula south. I don’t have too
much geographical knowledge of Halifax area yet, but I can say peninsula south is the bees’ knees. I think
because of its views and being close to downtown, and privacy have a lot to do with its value.

Question 4: Using the CMHC data, create a new table that visualizes something of your interest.
Visualize the results. Explain your story, why it is interesting to you, and what the data suggests.

In think this is interesting because I now live in this area and would like to explore the east coast more.
While I know Halifax pretty well, I may want to live in other maritime provinces now and seeing how
much the prices compare to Halifax helps me discover if I can afford it. Living on the west coast I would
like to explore the Atlantic as much as possible making this help me see what I can afford.
