CVE 313: Reinforced Concrete Design
Prof. SW Tabsh Homework No. 11

Problem 1:
A 2m square footing with 400 mm thickness is subjected to concentric gravity load
(Service = Ps and Factored = Pu) through an edge column with 0.3 m square cross-
section. The footing is reinforced at the bottom with No. 16 bars along two
perpendicular directions. The clear cover on reinforcement at the bottom is 75mm
and at the sides is 40 mm. The material properties are f’c = 25 MPa (normal
weight) and fy = 420 MPa. Unit weight of soil cover is 16 kN/m3.
a) Find the maximum service load Ps that can be applied on the column if the
allowable soil bearing capacity under the footing is 200 kPa.
b) Find the maximum factored load Pu that can be applied on the column based
on 2-way action (punching) shear.
c) If the factored load applied on the column is Pu = 1,000 kN, find how many
No. 16 bars in each direction are needed to resist flexure.
