1. What is the genre of the story?


It’s a short story that belongs to Nautical fiction, frequently also naval fiction, sea fiction, naval

adventure fiction or maritime fiction, is a genre of literature with a setting on or near the sea,

that focuses on the human relationship to the sea and sea voyages and highlights nautical

culture in these environments.

2. What are rogue waves? Rogues, called 'extreme storm waves' by scientists. They are

massive , deadly , & unpredictable waves.

Summary: “Rogue Wave” is a short story about a brother and sister trying to survive the sudden

strike of a rogue wave. One character is trapped inside the galley of the sailboat, unable to get

out. The other character is trapped outside clinging to the hull of the flipped over boat. In order

to survive, both characters have to overcome their own fears while not being able to

communicate. The characters’ actions demonstrate perseverance while facing many obstacles.

Main Characters: - Sully and Scoot are the main characters.


- Scoot is a 14-year-old girl who wants to learn to sail.

- Her brother, Sully, is an experienced sailor who is 19 years old.

Settings

Place: Sailing on the sailboat called Sea Dog, out in the ocean without any people around.

Time: No time is given for the setting.

The story also has two other settings; inside the galley in an upturned boat, and outside on the
Sea Dog’s upturned hull.
