I. Learning Competency with Code

Illustrate polynomial functions (M10AL-IIa-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

As you go through this topic, you are expected to illustrate polynomial functions.

To give you a clearer understanding of what a polynomial function is, study the following
examples below.

Example 1: Write the function in standard form. State its degree, type and leading
coefficient.
𝑓(𝑥) = − x 2+ 5 x 3 + 8

Solution: Standard form: 𝑓(𝑥) = 5 x 3 − x 2+ 8

Cubic function because it has a degree of 3. The leading coefficient is 5.

Example 2: Write the function in standard form. State its degree, type and leading
coefficient.
3 6
𝑓(𝑥) = 4 x 2 + x + 2𝑥
5
2
3 6
Solution: Standard form: 𝑓(𝑥) = x +4 x + 2𝑥
5
3
Polynomial function because it has a degree of 6. The leading coefficient is .
5
Example 3: Write the function in standard form. State its degree, type and leading coefficient.
𝑓(𝑥) = x 5 − √ 3 x 3 + 7 – 𝑥

Solution: Standard form: 𝑓(𝑥) = x 5 − √ 3 x 3 – 𝑥 + 7

Quintic function because it has a degree of 5. The leading coefficient is 1.
