Introduction
Militarism is the belief that a
country should have a strong
military capability and be
prepared to use it aggressively
to defend or promote its
interests.

Imperial countries in Europe

were strong proponents of
militarism.

NAVAL RACE
Throughout the 19th century, Great
Britain ruled the seas.

Only when German Emperor Kaiser

Wilhelm II came to power in 1888 did its
superiority come under threat.

Embarking on a policy of Weltpolitik,

Wilhelm II sought to amass a navy to
challenge Britain.

The naval race became one of the

primary causes of the First World War. The Anglo-German naval race was the most spectacular
strand of the general maritime arms before World War I.
Militarism
consequences
it caused a potent arms race and it also made the role of diplomacy
less effective for resolving disputes.

The accumulation of military power created an atmosphere of

distrust and suspicion, as countries viewed each other as potential
threats.

The belief in military strength played a role in escalating the conflict

once it began.

The German army suffered the highest number of military losses.
