Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Isabella Low

Date: 10/4/23
Teacher: Ms. Lacroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is Product
Proposed title for my project: Big Sis Podcast

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

What are positive impacts of having an older sister or a role model you admire?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

Choosing this inquiry question is a great area of focus because it will allow me to explore the
positive impact that guidance and mentorship can have on teenagers. This topic connects to
my passions and purpose as it can help me naviagate through life, and develop my own
values and goals. It is personally interesting to me because I believe in the power of role
models and the influence they can have on shaping our lives in a positive way.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

I have a younger sister who asks for my advice frequently. I have always been jelous of this
and seeked guidance from others. I have wanted a big sister to be there to guide me for as
long as I can rememeber. Therefore, creating this podcast will hopefully help those who are in
the same situation as me. Throughout highschool, I have been through many situations
reguarding friendship issues, social media bullying, and many common teenage issues. I feel I
can give realiable advice. This can help other younger girls naviagte the struggles which come
with being a young female.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

At this point in time, my career plan is to become a lawyer. This inquiry question connects to
my relationship with my younger sister. As an older sibling, I serve as a role model and
provide guidance, support, and valuable insights to my sister. I can offer advice on various
asooects of life, such as school, friendships, and personal development. Being a positive
influence and mentor to my younger sister helps her naviagte challenges and make informed

0
decisions. Aswell, exploring the benefits of having advice from a role model in todays society
can relate to the field of law. Role models and mentors play a crucial role in guiding aspiring
lawyers, providing valuable insights, and helping them navigate the legal profession.
Understanding the impact of mentorship and guidance can contribute to the development of
effective legal professionals.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Core Competency Reflection

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

Strengths:
1. I am personally responsible, self-motivated, and can advocate for myself.
During my first year playing for the Fraser Valley Selects soccer team, I struggled to get playing time
on the field. I persevered and advocated for myself. I spoke with my coach numerous times to learn
more about why she felt I didn’t deserve to play frequently. I learned my strengths and weaknesses as a
player. This gave me the opportunity to perfect my technique and focus on areas of improvement. I was
extremely motivated to prove myself to my coach and other players.

2. I am learning to take care of myself.

During the school year I tend to become stressed out with the workload. I usually drown myself in work
and it consumes my life. I am learning to focus on schoolwork while also having a social life and
making sure I am practicing self-care. So far this school I have been setting certain times to complete
assignments. Also, carving out time to spend with my friends and having fun being a senior student. I
am learning that it is okay to give myself time and complete assignments for the due date while still
practicing good habits for my mental health.

Area of Improvement:
1. I understand learning takes patience and time.
Occasionally, I become frustrated with myself because I don’t automatically understand what I am
learning. Last year, in my math class, I was having a tough time keeping up and understanding the
material. I have never been excellent at math, and it was confusing to me. I didn’t like that I couldn’t

1
understand and pick it up similar to the rest of my classmates. This made me impatient and made me
question myself. Although, I am working to learn patience and allow myself to have time to grasp
concepts that may be tricky.

2. I can express my needs and seek help when needed.

Often, I can be shy and nervous to ask questions when needed. I am a shy person and naturally find it
challenging to seek help. Asking for clarity when completing tasks is difficult for me because of my shy
character. I am working to break out of my shell and seek assistance when needed.

Social Responsibility
Strengths:
1. I can identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and use and evaluate strategies to
resolve problems.
In my genocide class last year, we completed group work. I exceled when listening to others express
their opinion. My friends each had different tasks to complete, and I appreciated their cooperation and
excellent creative ability. I can also hear others out when they express their feelings towards certain
scenarios. A few months ago, my friend and I got into an argument, we both got heated. Although, we
heard each other out and evaluated strategies to resolve the issue. Due to our problem-solving skills, we
talked things out and are closer than ever.

2. Contributing to the community and caring for the environment.

When I was in middle school, my class learned about climate change and how to care for the
environment. My friends and I presented a climate change PowerPoint to my classmates. My teacher
enjoyed the PowerPoint presentation so much that she signed us up to present it to the whole school.
My group and I presented it and got many students excited to help the environment. Along with this,
my friends and I spent numerous hours outside cleaning up garbage from the streets.

Area of Improvement:
1. I have positive peer and intragenerational relationships.
I have struggles building relationships with new people because of my shy nature. Teenage girls can be
mean and exclusive. There is negativity in high school, and this has caused me to be more gated. My
intergenerational relationships thrive when I spend quality time with my family. Although, I need to
work on making time for them. I spend most of my time playing sports, working, and going to school. I
need to work harder to further build my intergenerational relationships.

2. I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in all my
interactions, including online.
I feel I could do more to value diversity, I want to educate myself on other cultures and have the ability
to defend their human rights. I can advocate for others at a proficient level, although I wish to have the
courage to advocate for friends and family without a second thought. I become awkward in interactions

2
with people I don’t know well, I hope to learn to put myself out there and act more ethically.

Critical Thinking
Strengths:
1. I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.
I thrive when assessing myself and reviewing my personal work. My English teacher last year believed
in personal assessment which I really enjoyed. I felt this made my writing skills stronger and improved
my analytical thinking abilities. I enjoyed having the option to critique my own work and see growth
throughout my assignments.

2. I can ask good quality questions, gather relevant information, and come up with well-
developed conclusions.
When gathering relevant information, I utilize various sources. Last year I wrote a research paper which
I used sources such as books, articles, interviews, and online research. I asked good quality questions
when researching and dove deeper into the topic to help me gather valuable information. To come up
with well-developed conclusions, I analyzed the data I had gathered, identified patterns and trends, and
created logical inferences based on the evidence.

Area of Improvement:
1. I can explore and create new ways to represent my learning around a variety of problems,
events, issues, and needs.
When it comes to exploring and creating new ways to represent my learning, I need to focus on
thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries. I could experiment with different formats
such as visual aids like diagrams, charts, or infographics to represent my learning. Additionally,
incorporating different elements like videos or podcasts. Collaborating with others and gaining
different perspectives could also help me be more creative. By using these strategies, I could
explore and create new ways to represent my learning across a variety of problems, events, issues,
and needs.

2. I understand the purpose for my work and consider my audience.

I feel I need to improve my understanding of the purpose for my work and consider my audience.
To improve this, I could consider defining my goals and objective for my work. This will help me
understand the purpose behind it and what I want to achieve. Next, I could research and analyze my
target audience. I will consider their needs, interests, and preferences to tailor my message
effectively. I can also seek feedback from others to gain insights and perspectives.

Critical Thinking
Strengths:
1. I can create new and unique ideas that may provide new perspectives tat influence how people
think about topics.

3
When I was in middle school, there was a pumpkin launcher contest. My ability to create new and
unique ideas that provided different perspectives had a significant impact on the outcome of my
pumpkin launcher. By offering a unique viewpoint and introducing innovative concepts. I inspired my
group mates, and I was extremely proud. I embraced my creativity and used my critical thinking skills.
When exploring different options, I thought outside the box and created an extremely successful
pumpkin launcher. The pumpkin launcher went on to win first place!

2. I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.

When I was ten years old, I was trying to learn a new instrument, the guitar. At first, I struggled with
playing the chords correctly and strumming in rhythm. But instead of getting discouraged, I persevered
and kept practicing. I fixed my mistakes, adjusted my finger placement, and worked on my timing.
Over time, I began to see progress and improvement. My understanding of my failures and
determination to keep going lead to great results, and soon enough, I played my favourite song in
confidence!

Area of Improvement:
1. I can use the environment around me, including others, and my unconscious mind to generate
new ideas.
I was working on a group project in eighth grade, I was looking for new ideas. Mistakenly, I solely
relied on my own thoughts. Instead, I should’ve tried engaging with my group mates and hearing their
perspectives. We should’ve all encouraged open discussions and brainstorming sessions where
everyone could’ve contributed their ideas. Additionally, I underestimate the power of my unconscious
mind. Sometimes, I should take a break and allow my mind to wander to lead to unexpected and
creative ideas. To help my unconscious mind I want to start taking more walks in nature, engaging in
more activities I enjoy, and simply giving myself downtime. By utilizing the environment around me,
including others and my unconscious mind, I could’ve generated exciting and innovative ideas for my
project!

2. I can take my ideas, evaluate, develop, and refine them and make something productive out of
them.
At the beginning of this year, I had to create a ceramic project. I started by researching similar ideas,
this frustrated me because I knew it would be lots of work. I evaluated my options and how I would
make my idea come to life. I brainstormed ways to improve upon my initial idea, considering factors
like functionality, usability, and target audience. This was challenging for me because I just wanted to
complete my project quickly. When finally completing my pinch pot project, it fell apart. This is
because I did not take needed time to evaluate, develop, and refine thus project. I am not great at taking
my ideas through this process. I will be more careful while creating more ceramics projects.

Communication
Strengths:
1. I can work with other students to plan, inquire, and solve problems.
My classmates and I worked on a science project in grade nine. We planned, inquired, solved problems
effectively, by assigning specific roles based on each person's strengths. We came up with a shared

4
timeline and set goals for each stage of the project. During the inquiry phase, we conducted research
together, shared resources, and discussed different approaches. When faced with challenges, we
brainstormed solutions as a team, considering everyone's input. By working together, we not only
achieved better results but also developed valuable teamwork skills along the way!

2. I can listen, learn, and contribute meaningfully to discussion and debate, consider different
perspectives, and build consensus.

During genocide class last year, my classmates and I were discussing a controversial topic. To listen,
learn, and contribute meaningfully, I actively engaged in the discussion by asking thought-provoking
questions and sharing my own insights. I considered different perspectives by listening to my
classmates' viewpoints, even when they were different from my own. I attempt to build consensus by
focusing on shared values and seeking compromise.

Area of Improvement:

1. I can engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Despite my shyness, I attempt to take small steps to overcome my hesitation. I have been trying my best
to engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and audiences. I have started by
asking open-ended questions to encourage discussion and learning. I have tried to tailor my inquiries to
suit different audiences, considering their interests and knowledge levels. With time and practice, I
hope to gain confidence and become better at engaging in meaningful inquiries that resonate with
diverse audiences.

2. I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I have learned.
I recognize the importance of showcasing the process of learning and sharing what I have learned. I
understand this is important for identifying areas for improvement. I actively seek out opportunities to
engage in meaningful conversation. Although, I can be reserved and hesitant to share my thoughts.
Being open and exploring new ways to represent my learning makes me nervous. I try my best to
showcase my learning and consider my audience to ensure my learning is represented correctly.
Although, this is challenging for me. I hope to improve this habit.

Personal and Cultural Identity

Strengths:
1. I understand what is important to me.
I understand what is important to me. I have many passions, but one that holds a special place in my
heart. Soccer is incredibly important to me. Soccer has provided numerous benefits for me, such as
physical fitness, teamwork, and personal growth. It's a great way to stay active, build friendships, and

5
develop valuable skills both on and off the field. Soccer has helped me learn skills such as teamwork,
resilience, and discipline. It has provided a platform to showcase my skills, build lasting friendships,
and experience the thrill of competition.

2. I know my strengths and what makes me unique.

In terms of strengths, I have effective communication, problem-solving skills, adaptability, creativity,
and resilience. These strengths help me navigate challenges, work well with others, and achieve my
goals. As for unique aspects, I would consider the fact that I play high level soccer unique. Aswell, I am
Indigenous, I have different morals and values than others, and many unique interests. Some unique
interests include my music taste, where I grew up, and my athleticism.

Area of Improvement:
1. I can define myself in terms of my relationship to others and to the world.
Sometimes, I struggle to define myself. I am uncertain about how I will fit into the world. Although,
self-definition is a personal and growing process. I am taking my time to explore my interests, values,
and passions. Trying to understand where I fit in and how I connect with others has been challenging.
To help define myself I engage in activities that resonate with me, connect with new people, and seek
out meaningful friendships. I am learning to find my own unique identity. I hope I can stay on this path
of positive self-discovery.

2. I understand how to use my strengths and abilities to my advantage, and I can explain how I
use them to contribute to my community.
For me, it can be challenging to figure out how to use my strengths effectively. I need to start by
reflecting on my skills, interests, and passions, I will consider how these strengths can be applied to
help others or address community needs. Aswell, it may be helpful to seek guidance from mentors,
engage in volunteer work, or join community organizations to gain practical experience. This will be a
process of learning, but with time and effort, I will hopefully find meaningful ways to contribute my
strengths to the community.

realistic schedule will help me manage my time effectively. Technical difficulties are another
obstacle that may arise, such as recording glitches or software malfunctions. Although, there
are plenty of troubleshooting techniques and online communities that can assist me with these
potential problems. Content development can also be a challenge, but with proper planning,
research, and brainstorming, I'll be able to overcome it. Building an audience takes time and
effort, so I need to be prepared for the challenge of audience growth. Promoting my podcast
