Calorimetry and Phase Changes (cont.)
• Heat of fusion (Lf) - the quantity of
heat necessary to change 1 g of a
solid to a liquid with no
temperature change.

• Heat of vaporization (Lv) - the
amount of heat needed to turn 1 g
of a liquid into a vapor, without a
rise in the temperature of the

2. Rods of copper, brass, and steel are welded together to form a Y-
shape figure. The cross-section area of each rod is 2.00 cm2. The free
end of the copper rod is maintained at 1000C, and the free end of brass
and steel rods are maintained at 00C. Assume that there is no heat loss
from the surfaces of the rods. The lengths of the rods are as follows:
copper, 18.0 cm; brass, 24.0 cm; steel, 13.0 cm. (a) What is the
temperature of the junction point? (b) What is the heat current in each
of the three rods?
