DIFFERENT BREATH SOUNDS

NORMAL BREATH SOUNDS:

BRONCHIAL – It may hear over the tracheal area and the sound have a high pitch and be loud

BRONCHOVESICULAR – Heard over the bronchi and the sound have a medium pitch

VESICULAR – Heard throughout peripheral lung fields and the sound is soft with a low pitch

ABNORMAL LUNG SOUNDS:

WHEEZES (WHISTLE) – High pitched “MUSICAL FLUTE”, Location: Entire Lung and its heard mainly on
EXHALATION

STRIDOR (SERIOUS SQUEAK) – Gasping sound with harsh sound quality it may be seen in children with
conditions such as croup or epiglottitis or anyone with an airway obstruction (It requires medical
treatment) High pitched harsh INSPIRATORY whistle, Location: Throat region (during inhalation)

CRACKLES (CRAZY FLUID) – Liquidly bubbling or crackling

Fine crackles – High Pitched, crackling sound and it similar to a fire crackling

Coarse crackles – Low pitched (Velcro pulled apart)

RHONCHI (RUMBLE) – Low pitched rattling or rumbling sound

PLEURAL FRICTION RUB (PEBBLES FRICTION)– Low pitched, harsh/grating sound or Dry rubbing (like 2
rocks grinding)
