• Pairedadrenal(suprarenal)glandslienearsuperior
polesofkidneys,embeddedinperirenaladiposetissue.
• Flattenedstructures,half-moon
shaped,4-6X1-2cm,X4-6mm 

insize,&about8gramwt.in 

adults(wt.&sizevarywithonceage).
• AdrenalglandsarecoveredbyadenseC.Tcapsule,
thatsendsthinsepta(trabeculae)totheinteriorofgland.
• Stromaconsistsmainlyofarichnetworkofreticular
fibers.

• Theglandconsistsoftwoconcentriclayers:
-Ayellowishperipherallayer,theadrenalcortex,&
yellowish peripheral -
Areddish-browncentrallayer,theadrenalmedulla.

• Thetwoorganswithdistinctorigins,functions&
morphologiccharacteristics,uniteduringembryonic
development.
• Cortex,mesodermal&medulladerivedfromneuralcrest
neuralcrest
cells,whichgiveorigintosympatheticganglioncellsas
cells, sympatheticganglioncells
well.
• Generalhistologicalappearanceofadrenalglandistypical

Severalarteriolesenter
aroundperipheryfrom
3groupsofarterioles:

1. Corticalarterioles, supplycapsule&form
capillaries&sinusoids,
thatirrigate,allcellsofcortex&joinmedullary
capillaries;
2. Medullaryarterioles,passdirectlythroughcortex&
formextensivecapillarynetworkinthemedulla.

3. Cellsofadrenalmedulla,
receiveboth:  -arterialbloodfrom
medullaryarteries& -venousblood
from  .corticalcapillaries.

• EndotheliumofCapillaries&
sinusoidsare,attenuated&
fenestrated.Capillariesof
cortex&medullaformcentral
medullaryveins,thatleaveasadrenalorsuprarenalvein.
Ultrastructureofcorticaladrenalocytes.

havefeaturestypicalof
steroid-secretingcells,i.e.,
steroid-secreting cells,

pyramidalcellswithincapillaries.

affectuptakeofNa+,K+,&waterbyepithelialcells.

 .*Mainproduct,aldosterone(majorregulatorofsalt
balance),actstostimulateNa+reabsorptionindistal
convolutedtubulesofkidneys.
 .*Aldosteronesecretioninzonaglomerulosais
stimulatedprimarilybyangiotensinII&alsobyan↑in
plasmaK+conc.,butonlyweaklybyACTH.

layerssurroundingmedulla.
• Adrenals,stainedwithH&E(Lt.)&
Mallorytrichrome(Rt.),
collagenappearsblue(a,b):
• Zonaglomerulosa,consistsof 
roundedclustersofcolumnarcells
principallysecretingmineralo-
corticoidaldosterone(c,d):
• Zonafasciculata,consistsoflong
large,spongy-lookingcellsmainly
secretingglucocorticoidssuchas
cortisol.(e,f):
• ZonaReticulosacellsaresmall,better
stained,arrangedinaclosenetwork&

 Zonafasciculata(middlezone)(65-80%ofcortex),
consistoflongcordsoflargepolyhedralcells,1-2cells
thick,separatedbyfenestratedsinusoidalcapillaries.
 .*Thecellsaremostdenselyfilledwithcytoplasmiclipid

droplets,duringtissuepreparation,oftenappear
vacuolatedorspongy.
 .*Cellsofthiszonesecreteglucocorticoids(cortisol),
whichprimarilyaffectcarbohydratemetabolismby
stimulatingproductionofglucosefromaminoacidsor
fattyacids(gluconeogenesis)inmanycells,&glucose

sterone(DHEA),thatisconvertedtotestosteronein
severalothertissues.*Secretionbythesecellsisalso
stimulatedbyACTH,&isunderfeedbackregulation
withthepituitary&hypothalamus.
