Heat is a form of energy. It

is thermal energy. It is
produced in the following
instances: (Students listen)
1. Doing physical
activities and body
exercise.
2. Rubbing two objects
together.

THE NATURE OF HEAT

Heat is being used
synonymously with
temperature. Heat and
ELABORATE
Temperature may be related
to one another, but they are
two different terms.
Temperature is a measure of
the degree of hotness or
coldness of an object. It can
be described by the units
Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin,
and Rankin. The instrument
used to measure temperature
is a thermometer. On the
other hand, Heat can be
defined as the thermal energy
that is being transferred from
one object to another because
of temperature difference.
Heat is expressed through the
unit calorie. The Calorie is the
amount of heat required to
raise the temperature of 1
gram of water by 1°C. A
kilocalorie is 1,000 calories
(the amount of heat needed to
change 1 kilogram of water by
1°C).
Heat always flows from
hotter objects to objects with
lower temperature. When an
object is heated, energy is
given to the object. It is
important to remember that an
object does not contain heat.
Once heat energy touches
another object, it is eventually
converted into internal
energy. When a substance
absorbs heat, its molecules
gain kinetic energy and move
at a greater speed. The faster
they move, the hotter the
substance becomes. The
substance is said to have
gained internal energy. Heat,
therefore, is a measure of the
change in the total internal
energy of a body.
Conversely, if the substance
gives off heat, its internal
energy decreases. Internal
energy is also proportional to
the temperature of a
substance. Hence, giving off
heat decreases the internal
energy and decreases the
temperature as well. It is
important to note that heat will
not necessarily flow from an
object with high internal
energy to an object of low
internal energy. Internal
energy is dependent on the
amount of a substance. The
greater the amount of the
substance, the higher the
internal energy. Imagine
yourself drinking a hot coffee.
As you drink, a tiny drop
accidentally lands on your
own hand. The temperature of
the drop of coffee is the same
as the one in the cup.
However, the effect is nothing
compared to the effect of the
entire cup of coffee poured
into your hand. Here, it can be
said that there is less internal
energy in a drop of coffee
than in a cup of hot coffee.
