ACTIVE TRANSPORT

- the movement of dissolved molecules in/out of the cell

- from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration
- particles move AGAINST the concentration gradient
- uses energy during respiration

SODIUM AND POTASSIUM IONS

- higher concentration of potassium K+

- lower concentration of sodium Na+

If Na+ ions are outside, they will try to move into the cell based on:
- the concentration gradient
- the voltage
K+ is positive, the voltage will encourage its movement into the cell because:

- the concentration gradient will try to push it out of the cell

- final concentrations of K+ will be in balance on the 2 sides

CONCENTRATION GRADIENT + VOLTAGE = ELECTROCHEMICAL GRADIENT

Primary active transport

- uses a source of chemical energy ATP to move molecules across the membrane against their
gradient
