Yoga, an ancient practice and meditation, has

become increasingly popular in today’s busy
society. For many people, yoga provides a
retreat from their chaotic and busy lives. There
are many types of yoga. Hatha (a combination of
many styles) is one of the most popular styles.

PROJECT HEALTHY MIND - PHASE I

YOGA FOR LIVES
ARTICLE WRITTEN BY LEO SANIDI ROVINYA
HEALTHY MIND - I
Hatha yoga focuses on Pranayamas (breath-controlled exercises). These are followed by
a series of Asanas (yoga postures), which end with Savasana. The goal during yoga
practice is to challenge yourself physically, but not to feel overwhelmed. At this “edge”,
the focus is on your breath while your mind is accepting and calm.

Yoga develops inner awareness. It focuses your attention on your body's abilities at
the present moment. It helps develop breath and strength of mind and body. It's
not about physical appearance.

ccording to other studies, practicing yoga can help reduce people’s stress, anxiety, and
depression, perhaps better than traditional medication if you practice daily for over a
month. Yoga has also been found to be an effective way to help people overcome
addictions. In light of these findings, it’s not surprising those regular practitioners of
yoga report being happier.

ALeo Club of Kolonnawa has organized a Sports and Recreation project. In its phase 1, We
organized a Yoga programme at Nandasri Hatha Yoga Centre, Nawala (near to
Uncommon Homes) on 17 th of September 2023. The Guru Nanda Siriwardena and his
daughter Mrs. Miulangi Siriwardhena has conducted this program to the Leos of
Kolonnawa. There were 7 outsiders apart from Leos to the program by seen our flyers on
Social Media.

This Program was basically organized for corporate sector employees to enhance their
posture when employing, their flexibility, enhancing the beauty and yoga exercises for
arms, abdomen and legs. There were 20 participants to the program. The Ceylon Soap Co
Limited has given free scented ayurvedic soaps for each participant free of charge at the
premises. The event terminated as a successful phase with some refreshments for
participants.

with a past club president, Leo Chanuki Menoli -
Interview conducted by Leo Tevin Wolff

MORNING
BREW
Q1. Can you share with us how you first got involved in the Leo Club and what motivated you
to join?

I first became involved with the Leo Club during my time in

school. Coincidentally, the club was
chartered in the same year that I joined, and I had the honor of
serving as its charter president.

I joined the Leo Club because I’ve always been passionate

about making a positive impact in my community. Seeing my
siblings involved in different organizations motivated me to
find a way to contribute. Joining the Leo Club allowed me to
follow my passion for community service and leadership.

Q2. What were your memories of your presidency in the Leo

Club of Kolonnawa?
My presidency at the Leo Club of Kolonnawa
was a truly unforgettable experience. It was a
year filled with growth, challenges, and
numerous rewarding moments. Specially
working with the fellow Leos of our club was a
truly exciting task.
One of the most memorable
aspects was the sense of
responsibility and leadership it
brought. Serving as president
meant overseeing various
projects, managing teams, and
making critical decisions.

VOLUME I - SEPTEMBER ISSUE 07

It was a steep learning curve, but it allowed me to
develop important leadership and organisational skills
that I still use today.

Another standout memory was the sense of

camaraderie and friendship within our Leo Club. We
worked together closely, supported one another
through challenges, and celebrated our successes as a
tight-knit Leo family. These bonds continue to endure
even beyond my presidency.

Q3. According to your perspective, what is Leoism?

Speaking from my experience Leoism, it is a powerful

movement that is focused on service, leadership, and
community. It’s about dedicating oneself to creating
positive change, promoting volunteerism, and fostering
compassion in society. Simultaneously, it provides
opportunities for personal growth, the development of
leadership skills, and becoming a more socially
responsible individual. Speaking from my experience

Simultaneously, it provides opportunities for

personal growth, the development of leadership
skills, and becoming a more socially responsible
individual. It’s an incredible journey of growth,
friendship, and service that I’m proud to be a part of.

Q4. Can you share some challenges and the ways

you overcame them during the Leo Journey?

Certainly! My Leo journey has been filled with

valuable challenges that have contributed to my
growth and development. One notable challenge
was managing time effectively. Balancing my Leo
commitments with academic and personal
responsibilities could be demanding.

To overcome this challenge, I learned to prioritize

tasks, set clear goals, and establish a well-structured
schedule. Delegation and teamwork were also key; I
relied on fellow Leo club members to share
responsibilities, which enhanced our sense of unity
and efficiency.

VOLUME I - SEPTEMBER ISSUE 08

Another challenge was fundraising for our community projects. Finding the necessary resources
to fund initiatives could be challenging. To address this, we diversified our fundraising methods,
organized events, and sought support from local businesses and individuals who shared our
vision.
Lastly, fostering community engagement was a challenge. Encouraging participation from the
community in our projects sometimes required creative strategies. We utilized social media,
collaborated with local organizations, and conducted awareness campaigns to overcome this
challenge.
Through these experiences, I not only overcame challenges but also gained valuable skills in time
management, fundraising, and community outreach. It reinforced my belief in the power of
teamwork and determination in achieving our Leo club’s mission.

Q5. Having years of excellence and experience in chairing or conducting projects, whether
within your club or outside, do you think that there need to be any changes or developments in
a final project outcome?

With years of experience in chairing and conducting Leo Club projects, I’ve gained valuable
insights into project management within our organization. However, I do believe that there is
always room for improvement, and we have to humbly be open for change for a better outcome.
With experience in chairing Leo Club projects, I’ve learned that we must continually seek ways to
maximize our projects’ impact. This involves innovation, strategic partnerships, and adaptability
to evolving community needs. Our goal is lasting impact, not just project completion.
Sustainability is crucial. We must consider how our initiatives create ongoing community benefits
and a positive legacy.
In conclusion, while our Leo Club projects have achieved success, I believe in continuous
improvement and openness to change for better outcomes.

Q6. Being one of the successful Leos, who won many awards and recognitions, could you tell
us how you balance your Leo life, career, and personal life?

Balancing my Leo life, career, and personal life is a rewarding but challenging journey. It demands
careful time management, setting clear boundaries, and a commitment to self-care.
Time management is my top priority, especially in my career. Setting boundaries is crucial to
ensure I allocate time for Leo Club commitments, work, and personal life. It's an ongoing
journey that requires planning, delegation, communication, and self-care. While not always easy,
the rewards of impacting the Leo Club, excelling in my career, and enjoying a fulfilling personal
life are truly worth the effort.

Q7. Can you recall a particular heartwarming or impactful moment you experienced while
serving the community at large?

There are so many heartwarming moments I have experienced while doing service projects. It is
difficult to mention only one.

VOLUME I - SEPTEMBER ISSUE 09

Kolonnawa Leo club has been doing an New Years
Project (Leo Aurudu) at one particular children’s
home for a few consecutive years. I had the
opportunity to chair that project while I was a
member and I have to say that project made an
impactful moment in my life. These children faced
numerous challenges and often lacked access to
simple joys that many of us take for granted.

As we distributed gifts, hosted games, and shared a festive meal, I had the privilege of
witnessing pure joy and gratitude in the eyes of these children. It was a powerful reminder of
the impact a small act of kindness can have on someone’s life. Moments like this made me fall
in love with what we do as a part of the Leo Club.

Q8. How has the Leo Movement provided you with networking opportunities and connections
with Like-minded individuals?

The Leo Movement has been instrumental in expanding my network and connecting me with a
diverse group of like-minded individuals who share a deep passion for service and community
betterment. Through my involvement, I’ve had the privilege of forging connections with fellow
Leos who hail from various backgrounds and walks of life but are united by a common
commitment to making a positive impact.
The Leo Movement has not only connected me with like-minded individuals but has also
expanded my horizons, encouraging collaboration, learning, and growth among a diverse and
inspiring community of individuals committed to service and leadership.

Q9. What is your final advice or suggestion to newly installed Leos or the prospects that
joined recently?

My final advice to my dear Leos is to embrace this journey while you are a part of this movement.
Personally, this movement has helped me to learn, grow in so many aspects and it is a remarkable
experience. Your contributions, no matter how small, can create ripples of positive change in
your community.

Above all, never lose sight of the difference you’re making. Your dedication to service is a
powerful force for good. Together, we can achieve remarkable things.

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY
DAY
ARTICLE WRITTEN BY LEO NIPUNI PEIRISYALAGE

International Literacy Day, celebrated every year on September 8th, serves as a global reminder
of the fundamental importance of literacy. Established by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1966, this day underscores the role of literacy in
promoting human rights, reducing poverty, and fostering sustainable development.

Literacy is not merely the ability to read and write; it is the key to unlocking doors of opportunity
and knowledge. It empowers individuals to access information, participate in society, and make
informed choices. Moreover, literacy is a crucial factor in achieving gender equality, as it often
plays a pivotal role in empowering women and girls.

Each year, International Literacy Day focuses on a specific theme, addressing pertinent issues
related to literacy and education. Themes have ranged from "Literacy for Life" to "Literacy in a
Digital World," reflecting the changing landscape of literacy in the 21st century.

This day encourages governments, organizations, and communities to take concerted actions to
improve literacy rates, expand access to education, and ensure equal learning opportunities for
all. International Literacy Day reminds us that literacy is a transformative force, capable of
enhancing lives, eradicating poverty, and nurturing a more inclusive and equitable world. By
prioritizing literacy, we can help individuals realize their full potential and build a brighter future
for all.

An interview with our very own RAGESH YOGESHWARAN - Multiple
District Vice President | And the interview conducted by the Club
President Leo Induwari Peirisyalage FLM

Q1. First off, as the Immediate Past District President of Leo District 306 B2 and Multiple
District Vice President Sri Lanka & Maldives, how have this new leostic year been for you?

I have been in Leo for 10 years. This is my 10th year of Leosim. In my 9th year, I was the District
President of Leo District B2. I faced a lot of challenges during that fiscal year. When I was in the
club, it was a small circle, but when I became the District President, it was a great exposure for
me. I had to interact with Leo multiple, Lion multiple, and Lion District members. I gained some
benefits at the end of the year. I did not take any breaks from Leo; I continuously held positions.
In the last three months of my term as District President, I considered becoming a Multiple
District Vice President. I had been in the Multiple Council, but it was different from being a
Multiple District Vice President. Despite all these challenges, I am committed to doing good
work. Each district has different cultures, and I will make an effort to learn about them and work
within the multiple to support all the Leos in Multiple 306.

Q2. Why a person should be a Leo and what

inspired you to join leoism?

The reason for being in Leo after leaving school is

that students tend to focus on their studies, and they
may find it challenging to transition into a
professional lifestyle when they enter the workforce.
Therefore, Leos help students learn while they are
still in school, so they can excel in the work
environment after completing their degrees. I believe
that every student should continue with Leo after
school. This way, they can nurture their talents, learn
to handle challenges, and correct mistakes,
developing problem-solving skills and other valuable
attributes. The Leo movement builds leadership
qualities, and since Sri Lanka has many experienced
leaders, we also need youth to become great leaders.
Leos play a crucial role in this process, helping
students become well-rounded individuals who are
disciplined and capable of handling various
situations. I wasn't initially inspired to become a Leo,
but after learning about Leosim and being inspired by
leaders like Lion Rajitha Abeygunasekara, PMDP, PDP
B2, I decided to join and have fun with friends.

VOLUME I - SEPTEMBER ISSUE 19

“ The Leo movement builds leadership qualities,
and since Sri Lanka has many experienced
leaders, we also need youth to become great
leaders.

Q3. Having years of excellence and experience in conducting projects, guiding club members
and a whole District, do you think there is a need, to any changes or developments in final
project outcome?

Changes have occurred in Leosim. Among the many Leos, only a small percentage, around 10%,
are aware of Leosim and have some knowledge of the benefits it offers. Unfortunately, the
majority, approximately 90% of Leos, lack knowledge about Leo and its benefits. However, I am
determined to bring about change, and my goal is to ensure that all Leos are informed about
Leosim. I plan to achieve this by implementing changes within the multiple.

Q4. Being one of the successful Leos, who won many awards and recognitions, could you tell
us how you balance your Leo life, Lion life, career and personal life?

I did not expect all these awards and recognitions, but I have become a successful Leo. I
managed to learn about business through the contacts I made in Leosim. In my personal life, I
never expected to become a businessman, but it happened due to the connections and ideas I
gained from my experience in Leo. I didn't allocate specific time for Leo, personal life, or my
career, but I manage it as needed. Whenever I face a challenge in my life, I strive to learn from
my mistakes and use the opportunities to achieve success in both my personal life and in my
involvement with Leo.

Q5. What is your final advice or suggestion to newly installed Leos or the prospects joined

Q2. Why do you recycle? What are your motives?

Every year, around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. 500,000,000,000. That's a lot
of bags. So many that over one million bags are being used every minute and they're damaging
our environment. I thought canvas tote bags a better option for this issue. so i decided to make tote
bags from organic cotton fabric. There are some reusability benefits it offers over plastic bags.
Aside from the ability to wash and reuse canvas tote bag several times, can also use them for a
whole range of other purposes. For example, can use them to store your fresh veggies like
tomatoes or take them to home with ease.

Canvas tote bags are not only eco-friendly, but they are reusable and available in a wide range of
customizable designs. Many people opt for canvas tote bags as they make it easier to carry heavier
items, as you don’t need to bother about your bag tearing. The canvas tote bags are durable enough
to endure regular use, as they are made of highly heavy-duty and plain- woven fabric. You can find
them available in different materials, styles, and fabric weights, all designed to meet various
purposes.

Q3. What were the recycling challenges occurs to your company/business?

What is your biggest strength when it

It’s not only about the vocal conversations but also the ability to listen to other team members and

be very useful for the functioning of the team. Also, there can be some emerging conflicts specially
when working with youngsters. But strong communication can prevent the misunderstandings and
avoid any other issues among members. So, I believe that good communication is an immense strength
when incorporating with youth work.

SANIDI ROVINYA
Club Secretary - Leo club of Kolonnawa

I joined the Leo movement through my childhood friend Rehana, and it has profoundly shaped
my life. The Leo Club emphasizes Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity, providing a
platform for me to develop my graphic design skills, especially in creating flyers for our projects.
Beyond individual growth, the Leo Club teaches teamwork and community service. We learn
from each other and grow together, a unique experience missing in traditional workplaces.

Our annual installation ceremony, Ashra, is a significant event that celebrates our history and
contributions. As we mark our 25th anniversary, we reflect on the enduring spirit of Leo.

Amid this journey, my bond with my dog, Buddy, stands out. He's more than a companion; he's a
source of comfort and a loyal friend. Our relationship has taught me about compassion and
profound connections.

The connection between personal bonds with pets and broader community collaboration is a
reminder that our relationships are built on shared emotions.

For those passionate about community service and animal companionship, I advise embracing
both wholeheartedly. Lessons learned from caring for Buddy have enriched my perspective on
life and service, emphasizing compassion, patience, and love.

In the spirit of Leo, let's move forward with compassion, teamwork, and the knowledge that
together, we can make a lasting difference.
