Q2 Lesson Plan Project

Lesson Goals or Learning Targets (Word these as measurable student outcomes.)

1st grade, Learning the concept of greater than, less than, and equal to.
Students will be able to identify the numbers and be able to evaluate which numbers are
bigger and smaller or equal. They will be able to compare the numbers and decide if they
should use the greater than, less than, or equal to symbol.

Lesson Objectives or Success Criteria (Word these as student actions, use verbs.)

Students will be able to understand when given two numbers. Which number is greater than
or less than or equal to the other number. I will teach them the alligator trick which shows
them that the alligator always wants to eat the biggest number.

CSTP Rationale (Describe the ways your lesson aligns with the six California Standards for the
Teaching Profession)

CSTP 1 Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning

Make sure students know how to easily count to 20.
Make sure students know which number is bigger.
Students will understand the concept of which groups of things have more than the other.

CSTP 2 Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning

Every student will be treated fairly and will not be made fun of if they get it wrong.
Every student will be given a fair chance to answer a question.

CSTP 3 Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

Students will learn that the alligator mouth always opens to the larger number because it
wants to eat the most.
For students with special needs, they can begiven less problems.

CSTP 4 Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students
The material can be adapted to a different level. There can be much simpler numbers for
students that are having a harder time or there can be much larger numbers for students who
are excelling at the curriculum.

CSTP 5 Assessing Students for Learning

Whiteboard work can be done to review problems.
A math worksheet will be given out to the students

CSTP 6 Developing as a Professional Educator

I will look at the students and be a good communicator while teaching the lesson. So, the
students can understand what they are learning.

Lesson Plan Content (Written narrative paragraph about the lesson content.)

1. Explain to the students that today they will learn about the less than, greater than, and
equal to symbols
2. Draw and name the symbols of the board
> greater than
< less than
= equal to
3. Tell the students that the word greater than means bigger or more
4. Tell the students that the word lesser than means smaller or fewer
5. Tell the students that the word equal to means the same amount
6. Go over the alligator trick. Explain that the alligator always wants his mouth open to
the bigger number.
7. Say some numbers between 1 and 10 and have the students say which number is
bigger
8. Give out a worksheet and have the students practice this concept.

Instructional Procedures

• Focusing Event (Describe how you will get students to focus attention on your teaching.)

The teaching will be interactive. I will use the white board from them do practice
problems. I will say numbers at loud that they have to say which number is bigger or
smaller. There will be a fun worksheet where they can practice ti concept.
• Instructional Strategies (Click into that link for help describing all instructional methods you will
employ during the lesson. Remember, instructional strategies fall into one or more of the following
broad categories: DIRECT, INDIRECT, EXPERIENTIAL, INTERACTIVE, INDEPENDENT
STUDY)

My main goal will use interactive instruction to get to do a cooperative learning and
each student will be able to say which number is greater than, less than or equal to.
They will be interacting with their peers and then say which number the alligator would
want to eat. Then after that, there will be some direct instruction where the students
will go back to their desk and work on a worksheet. They will take from what they just
learned and will have to write in the correct symbol to use.

• Student Participation (How will you engage students and get them on board to participate?)

I can get the students to participate by pulling the sticks to see which student has to
answer. I will make it a safe and fun environment where no one will feel embarrassed
to answer. I will want them to say which number the alligator will want to eat.

• Formative Check (How will you check that all students are involved and engaged in the lesson?

I will make sure that each student gets a turn answering a question and that each
student will get a chance to write on the whiteboard.

• Closure (How will you end the lesson purposefully, with intentionality?)

I will close the lesson purposely and intentionally by going over the concept of which
number is greater than, less than, or equal to. I will talk about how the alligator wants
to always eat the number with the bigger amount. That is like to eat a lot.
After the lesson, students will go back to their desk and do a worksheet where that
must put in the correct symbol (< > =) with the group numbers. I will have enough
printed worksheets for each student. If a student is having trouble with the concept, I
will help them personally.

• Assessment (How will you assess that students achieved the lesson goals or learning targets?)

After a few weeks, at lunch or a recess I will gather rocks or look at their lunch food
and they will have to tell me which pile of rocks or potato chops is greater than or less
than. We can use things outside to talk about which pile has more than the other. We
can look at trees and see which one has more leaves, etc.
