RESEARCH
& INNOVATION UPDATES

Aluminium-based batteries surpass lithium-ion

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology
use aluminium foil, presenting a more affordable
and eco-friendlier substitute for lithium-ion bat-
teries. The research highlights their potential to
incorporate high-performance materials, particularly
aluminium, known for its energy efficiency, afford-
ability, and production advantages in the anode,
where lithium resides. To combat rapid degradation
in pure aluminium foils, researchers integrated trace
amounts of diverse materials, forming foils with
unique ‘microstructures.’ Testing over 100 materials
yielded improved efficiency and durability compared
to standard lithium-ion batteries. The aluminium
anode’s superior lithium storage capacity results in
high energy density, potentially surpassing lithium-
ion batteries, paving the way for energy-efficient and
cost-effective battery cells. Ongoing work explores
aluminium behaviour at larger scales and alternative

Shaping the future of autonomous driving

In a stride forward in the realm of autonomous vehicle
technology, the NYU Tandon School of Engineering re-
cently revealed an algorithm named Neurosymbolic Meta-
Reinforcement Lookahead Learning (NUMERLA), crafted to
surmount the enduring issue of unpredictability and safety
in real-world scenarios. In the NUMERLA framework, a
self-driving car, when confronted with a dynamic envi-
ronment, refines its comprehension of the current condi-
tions based on gathered data. Consequently, it anticipates
its future performance within a predefined time frame,
establishing appropriate safety parameters and refreshing
its knowledge base. This approach relies on lookahead
optimisation combined with safety considerations, result-
ing in an empirically secure yet suboptimal online control
strategy. By employing this algorithm, the vehicle rapidly Autonomous driving (represental image)

“Sad, Mad, Glad!” Most of us probably know about these three words, or a phrase
if I may call it, as something teams use to identify opportunities to improve morale
and job satisfaction. However, this My Story is about a leader from India who
deployed the ‘Sad, Mad, Glad’ framework to establish one of the largest automotive
semiconductor design teams in India. Today, many individuals who were/are a part
of this team are not reporting to managers sitting outside India. Instead, engineers
working from countries like Germany and the United States on SoC and allied
domains are reporting to these individuals. Today, he is busy building an automotive
technology company in India, which he envisions to be the first global MNC
to represent India on the global automotive platform. This is

ESP32. Refer to Table 2 and Table 3,
and Fig. 2 and Fig. 3, for the connec-
tions.
For connecting PS2 keyboard, refer
to Fig. 3 and Table 3. A PS2 keyboard,
like a USB keyboard, needs only 4 pins
to connect to an MCU: 5V, ground, data
pin, and clock pin (or IRQ pin). Since
this is a pure data-in device, GPIO pins
34 and 35 can be connected to it. GPIO
pins 34 and 35 are data-in pins only;
they are not data-out pins. Never use
them for TFT, LEDs, relays, etc as they
require signal output, unlike keyboard
Fig. 5: Snippet of source code configuration of the Wi-Fi SSID and password pins that need data input. Of course,
you can connect a PS2 keyboard to
other GPIO pins as well.
Here, the ESP is used to connect
to the internet and ChatGPT using
the OpenAI API, and the TFT display
is used as terminal display for the
ChatGPT output. The query can be
entered using the PS2 keyboard.
You may wonder why an old
PS2 keyboard is being used in the
prototype instead of a USB keyboard.
I tried to connect a sleek, small USB
keyboard, but I could not get it to
work with the ESP32.
