Steps in the Research and Writing Processes


Step 1: Research Plan and Annotated Bibliography
Step 2: Research Essay Presentation
Step 3: Research Essay

Research Process: As you can see from the chart above, the stages of the research and writing processes have been
divided up into steps to prepare your for the final assignment of the course, which is the Research Essay.
These three assignments are related, as they are all based on the same research. You may refine your research question,
thesis statement, and general plan as you go through the steps, but you should generally stick with the same topic and
research. The research essay will require you to apply your critical thinking skills, as it will be argumentative, rather than
informative or expository.

Research Essay Presentation: You will share your research with the class through an interactive presentation.

Format: PowerPoint or Google Slides


 Use text appropriately on slides
 Include relevant images, graphs, and videos, music, etc.
 Feel free to make your presentation eye-catching, but professional

Length of Presentation: 5-8 minutes (including discussion)

Please include the following information in your presentation:


 An interesting “hook” to engage the class in your topic
 Working Essay Title
 Working Research Question
 Working Argumentative Thesis Statement
 Brief overview of your main claims/points and supporting evidence from research (with in-text references)
 References/Works cited list

Discussion Component:
 Pose 2 critical thinking discussion questions about your topic’s relevance and importance in the world
 Moderate the discussion
