Topic- “Economics of the IPL in India”


Introduction
The Indian Premier League (IPL), also officially known as TATA
IPL, is a professional men's T20 cricket league, contested by ten
teams based out of seven Indian cities and three Indian states.
The league was founded by the BCCI in 2007. It is usually held
between March and May of every year and gives us a glimpse
into the hidden talent of upcoming players.
The IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world and in
2014 was ranked sixth by average attendance among all sports
leagues. Not only this, in 2010, the IPL became the first sporting
event in the world to be broadcast live on YouTube.
The brand value of the IPL in 2019 was ₹47,500. According to
BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed ₹1,150 crore (US$140
million) to the GDP of the Indian economy.
How does the BCCI Earn Money??
The major source of income of BCCI is through sponsorship and
broadcasting rights.
Some Examples include -
 The global media rights for IPL is awarded to Star India for Rs.
16,300 Crores for the period 2018 to 2022.
 PayTm was awarded title sponsorship rights for International
and Domestic matches for Rs. 326 Crores from 2019 to 2023.
PayTm will pay Rs. 3.80 Crores per match to BCCI.
 Official Kit sponsorship rights are awarded to Nike for Rs. 370
Crores from 2016 to 2020.
 BYJU is the official Indian Cricket Team sponsor for Rs. 1,079
Crores.
 Hyundai Motors Company, Dream 11 and Ambuja Cement are
the official sponsors from 2019 to 2023. Together the three
companies will contribute Rs. 2.59 Crore per match to BCCI.

Impact of IPL on Indian Economy
1. Significant rise in GDP:
IPL has been contributing massive profits to the GDP of
India. Huge scale branding, crazy fan support, and
tremendous fan following worldwide have led to a
constant rise in the GDP.
2. Boosts Tourism:
Apart from 32 international players, there is a massive
boost in the revenue generated from international
tourism. The IPL led to a whopping 30% increase in
travel revenue. People from all over the world travel to
different states and cities of India during the season.
3. Generates New Jobs:
The IPL generates job employment at a large scale and
effectively leads to India’s economic development. The
employment is generated from companies, their
stakeholders, sports personalities, emerging athletes,
etc.
4. Media Exposure and Viewership:
As per the data collection of economic times of India,
the T20 contest in 2019 broke all its previous records in
the viewership department, and TV viewing made a
record of 462 million clocks and a watch time of 338
billion minutes.
5. Hotel & Restaurant Business:
During the IPL season, there’s a surge in travel business
and accommodation business, and eating ventures.
