on a transformative journey. Our goal is to democratize gardening so that anyone,
regardless of skill level, can enjoy, stress-free, and thrive from thriving, lush
greenery.

With Smart Probes, engineers can now monitor their plant’s health in real time, get
caring advice, and receive rewards for providing effective plant care. This clever
system combines smart sensors with a gamified mobile app.

This merging of engineering and technology not only makes plant care easier, but it
also strengthens the bond between engineers and their green partners. It also
capitalizes on a growing market that is driven by the community’s need for
sustainable and interactive solutions for highway gardening.
iv
Introduction

1.1 Purpose

Plant Care Confidence: With Smart Probes, engineers in the computer and civil
fields, regardless of experience level, can handle plant care with assurance.
Even inexperienced landscape engineers can become skilled plant enthusiasts
with the availability of real-time data and professional advice.

1.2 Problems

1.2.1 Inconsistent plant care due to busy lifestyles and forgetfulness.

In the hustle and bustle of daily routines, individuals with hectic schedules
may find it challenging to adhere to a regular watering and maintenance routine for
highway plants. The demands of work, family responsibilities, and other
commitments can easily lead to neglect, causing fluctuations in the well-being of
flowering landscape median strip plants.

1.2.2 Expensive
Since 2000, there have been substantial changes in the price of smart
probes. Prices for smart probes have typically been rising due to growing
market demand, improved manufacturing efficiency, and technological
advancements. Smart probes were somewhat pricey in the early 2000s
because of the newness of the technology and the small production volume.

1.2.3 Governmental /Insurance Involvement

This skyrocketing cost has been caused by numerous factors, such as
inflation, product liability, and demand. But two factors stood out as the main
contributors. First, Medicare’s payment for prescription oxygen was lowered by
legislation. Second, not many insurance providers have plans that pay for long-term
oxygen prescriptions. As a result, you or your patients are responsible for covering
the extra costs.

2.0 Discussion

2.1 Implementation of Smart Probes

Implementing smart probes on flowering landscapes in highway median strips can

provide valuable data for monitoring and managing the irrigation and environmental
conditions of these landscapes. Smart probes can be used to measure soil moisture,
temperature, and other relevant parameters, allowing for more precise and efficient
irrigation practices.

By integrating smart probes with a central monitoring system, highway maintenance

personnel can remotely access real-time data on soil conditions and make informed
decisions about when and how much to water the flowering landscapes. This can
help conserve water, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure the health and vitality of
the plants.

Additionally, smart probes can also be used to monitor environmental factors such
as ambient temperature, humidity, and light levels, which can further inform
landscape management practices.

Overall, the implementation of smart probes on flowering landscapes in highway

median strips can contribute to more sustainable and effective landscape
management, benefiting both the environment and the community.

2.2 Technical Description

Figure 2. Actual Appearance of the Device

Moisture Sensor: To determine the volumetric water content of the soil, smart
probes employ capacitive or resistive moisture sensors. These sensors measure
changes in electrical conductivity or capacitance by inserting probes into the soil and
measuring the moisture content. After that, this data is sent to a central system for
evaluation and judgment.
Temperature Sensor: To measure the temperature of the soil, smart probes are
fitted with temperature sensors, such as thermistors or integrated circuit temperature
sensors. The precise measurements of soil temperature that these sensors offer are
essential for comprehending microbial activity, plant development, and general soil
health.
Sunlight Sensor: The amount of sunlight that reaches the soil's surface is measured
by sunlight sensors, which are typically photovoltaic cells or photodiodes. Plant
placement in the landscape can be optimized with the use of this data, which aids in
understanding the light conditions necessary for plant growth.
Nutrient Sensor: To measure the concentrations of important nutrients in the soil,
such as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, smart probes can also include ion-
selective electrodes or other chemical sensors. When determining the fertility of the
soil and directing the application of fertilizers, this information is invaluable.

2.3 Operating Instructions
Crop Growth Monitoring - To measure soil temperature, moisture content, and
nutrient levels in crop fields, place smart probes at key locations. Establish a system
for transmitting and collecting data so that you can compile and examine the
information that the smart probes have gathered. Keep a close eye on the data to
follow the crops' developmental stages and make well-informed choices about
fertilization, irrigation, and other agronomic techniques.
Humidity Monitoring - To keep an eye on the soil moisture content at various
depths in the crop root zone, use smart probes equipped with moisture sensors. Set
ideal soil moisture thresholds and get alerts when the moisture levels stray from the
intended range.
Temperature Monitoring - Use temperature-sensing smart probes to keep an eye
on the temperature of the surrounding air and the soil. Utilize the temperature data to
determine how temperature affects crop growth and to put the right controls in place
to lessen the stress that temperature has on the crops.
Soil Quality Monitoring - Measure the levels of important nutrients in the soil with
smart probes equipped with nutrient sensors to keep an eye on the quality of the soil.
Make educated decisions about soil amendments and fertilization techniques by
analyzing the nutrient data to determine the fertility of the soil.
Plant Disease Monitoring - To keep an eye out for symptoms of plant diseases,
combine smart probes with disease detection technologies like spectroscopy or
molecular sensors. Apply an early disease detection and intervention system based
on the information gathered by the smart probes.
Crop Production Monitoring - Use smart probes to keep an eye on soil parameters
and environmental factors, such as temperature, nutrient levels, and water
availability, that have an immediate impact on crop productivity. To improve crop
management techniques and increase production efficiency, analyze the data.
Pest Monitoring - To keep an eye on pest activity in the fields, combine smart
probes with pest detection technologies like acoustic sensors or pheromone traps.
To reduce crop damage, apply pest control strategies based on the information
gathered by the smart probes.
UAV-Based Surveillance - Integrate information from unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) and aerial imagery with the data gathered by smart probes to obtain a
thorough picture of crop and environmental conditions. Make wise choices regarding
resource allocation, crop management, and environmental stewardship by utilizing
the integrated data.
