WEEK 7

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS &

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
OBJECTIVES

After this lesson, the students must be able to:

● demonstrate understanding and specificity and

feasibility of the problem posed;
● indicate scope and delimitation of the study
● identify people who will benefit from the problem
posed
INTRODUCTION

Let us now discuss the research’s scope and

limitations. In discussing these things, allow me to discuss
them through the integration of two of the greatest values that
I know and I practice in life: (1) prudence, and (2) humility.
INTRODUCTION
PRUDENCE
Merriam Webster Dictionary
has various definitions of prudence. It
states that this word refers to (1) the
ability to govern and discipline oneself
by the use of reason, (2) the sagacity
or shrewdness in the management of
affairs, (3) the skill and good judgment
in the use of resources, and (4) the
caution or circumspection as to
danger or risk.
INTRODUCTION

There are also some theological definitions of the

said word but I opted not to provide them here because of a
certain level of understanding which might confuse you
more than help you comprehend the same. In my personal
understanding and application of the word prudence, to me
it means knowing your place and knowing when to act and
when to stop.
INTRODUCTION
In research, scope refers to your place in the field of
academic inquiry. It is knowing what you have, how far you
can go, what are the variables under study, etc. Knowing
one’s scope or coverage in layman’s terms necessitates a
certain degree of prudence.
Being blind to one’s scope or place in the
academic field is a sign of lack of prudence which results
in poor judgment. Knowing your place is a sign of strength.
So, at this point of discussion, for scope, I would like you
to remember prudence.
INTRODUCTION
HUMILITY
Humility originated from the
Latin word “humus”, meaning “soil” or
“earth.” Humility therefore requires
from us that we should accept that we
came from dust, from the soil, and we
shall return in there. We have to
remember the need for us to be down-
to-earth as no person is perfect and
we have our own weaknesses - our
limitations.
INTRODUCTION

We are finite and temporal. Accepting the fact that

we have certain limitations can actually guide us in our life
and journey. The same is true in research. Knowing and
accepting that a research has certain limitations are the
foundations of a successful research endeavor. At this
point, I would like you to recall humility whenever we talk of
a research’s limitations.
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
● The delimitation of the study aims to narrow the scope of
the study.
● It is delimiting a study by geographic location, age, sex,
population traits, population size, or other similar
considerations.
● Delimitation is used to make study better and more feasible
and not just for the interest of the researcher.
● It also identifies the constraints or weaknesses of your study
which are not within the control of the researcher.
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Delimitations aim to narrow the scope of a study.

For example, the scope may focus on specific variables,
specific participants, specific sites, or narrowed to one type
of research design (e.g., ethnography or experimental
research). Limitations, however, aim to identify potential
weaknesses of the study (Creswell, 2012)
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Sample phrases that expressed the delimitation of the

study:

1. The study does not cover the……

2. The researcher limited this research to……

3. This study is limited to………

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study identifies the boundaries of

the study in term of subjects, objectives, facilities, area, time
frame, and the issues to which the research is focused.

A research’s scope gives the readers an idea of your

study’s scope or coverage, the variables included in the study,
the setting, locale, etc. On the other hand, the limitations tell
the readers of a study’s boundaries or the things which the
study or the researcher cannot and will not be able to do due
to some reasons.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Sample phrases that help express the scope of the study:

1. The coverage of this study....

2. The study consists of....

3. The study covers the ……….

4. This study is focus on……..

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
In summary, the scope and delimitation of the study
contains the following:

1. Extent of the study

2. The information included in the title of the study

3. Population responds
4. Variables or factors involved and lastly;

5. Period covered by the study.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
● The significance of the study is a part of the introduction
of a thesis.
● It should determine who benefits from the study and how
that specific audience will benefit from its findings.
● The significance of the study could be simply reflected
by the following two questions: Why should my study be
published? What significant scientific contribution is my
study making to my field of research? Importantly, the
significance of the study should also be written with a
non-expert in mind.
