Course Overview:
Logistics and Supply chain management is unique in the sense that it is one of the oldest business activities.
Even though, no products can reach a customer without logistical support, yet the firms have started
focusing on logistics and supply chain management as a source of competitive advantage only in last few
decades. There is a growing realization that a company cannot effectively compete without an efficient
logistics system. Globalization of economy and e- business has heightened the strategic importance of
logistics management and created new opportunities for using it as a competitive tool. The function of
international logistics management is to design and manage the processes, assets, and flows of material and
information required to satisfy customers’ demands spread across the globe.
Logistics and distribution management poses a great challenge as well as a opportunity for most
companies. The logistics costs of any company having global operations are substantial. On the othwer
hand side, logistics has a direct impact on the global market penetration and customer service. With
continuous growth in international trade, the supply chain managers are increasingly facing the challenge
of making decisions regarding the optimal mode of transportation, payment methods, and management
of risks associated with global trade. Against this backdrop, the goal of this course is to understand the
logistical capabilities a firm requires to compete in a globalized economy and dynamic business environment.
The course provides an opportunity to the students to integrate the traditional as well as modern concepts
of business logistics in context of global scenario.

Objectives:
The Objective of this course is to gain the knowledge about optimization and management of operations
in Logistics and warehouses and the ability to apply them in the enterprise reality.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should
• Understand the emergence and evolution of logistics and warehousing along with Impact of
globalization, current trends, and challenges of logistics
• Describe various subfunctions of logistics like warehousing, packaging, modes of transportation,
and role of intermediaries.
• To be familiar with different types of international trade documentation, insurance, sales contracts
& payment modes and trade terms
• Understand and evaluate the issues of logistics trade, pricing of various modes, inhouse or
outsourcing the logistics, inventory-warehousing trade-off, transportation networks, and trade-
offs in transportation network design

Group Project Guidelines


Group projects will be allocated to the students by 2nd or 3rd lecture. Each group will comprise of 4-5
students.
• Each student will be evaluated on the basis of individual contribution and teamwork.
• Team performance will be judged on the basis of presentations, content, new ideas, time
management, impact of the subject presentation, queries handled.
