COURSE DESCRIPTION

Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for various purposes. (CMO 20 s 2013). It is a three-unit
course that develops students' communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them
opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical
evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly.
The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and their future
careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audio-visual and/or web-based output for various purposes

COURSE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Class Policies (Residential Class)


1. Attendance in the class signifies readiness to participate in class discussions and activities.
2. A student is responsible for his/her absence; no make-up projects will be given.
3. A student will be automatically marked DP (Dropped) after ten (10) consecutive absences or more than 20% of the required number of hours without any valid reasons.
4. Requirements must be submitted within the designated date of submission.
5. Others (New Normal Scheme):
● Everyone must wear face mask and maintain social distancing of at least 1 meter at all times.
● No borrowing of ball pen, no sharing of papers and other learning materials.
● Bring own alcohol, soap and hand sanitizer.
● Stay-at-home must be practiced if there is any unfavorable health condition (fever, cough, etc.) for safety purposes.

Class Policies (Online Class)


1. Wear a decent casual dress during web conference.
2. No foul words during online discussions.
3. Observe punctuality and courtesy (group of 5 individuals per batch; usually group leaders).
4. Private conversations during web conferencing are not allowed.
5. Respect shall be always observed.
6. Cheating and plagiarism not tolerated.
7. On-time submission of requirements as agreed during class orientation.

A. ABSENCES AND TARDINESS


● Tardiness is not encouraged during residential class. Students should be inside the class before or exactly the time scheduled. However, there will be a 15-minute grace
period before the student will be marked absent.
● Ten (10) absences will be considered officially “dropped”.

● Missed quizzes, activities and exams are given consideration, provided that the student concerned presents a valid reason for absence in black and white. If no valid
reason is presented, the missed work will be equivalent to 5.0.

C. HOMEWORK POLICY
● Failure to submit home assigned tasks will be marked 5.0. Submission of work beyond the deadline will not be accepted.
● Cheating is highly prohibited in class. Anyone caught cheating will be given a grade of 5.0 in the exam or quiz currently undertaking.

D. ACADEMIC HONESTY
Plagiarism is a crime. Students who are proven to have plagiarized will be given 5.
