Torque Converter Stall - Test

The torque converter stall test is a test of the engine, torque converter, drive train, and brake system as a
unit. The converter output stalls with the engine at full throttle. This test will give you an indication if the
engine and transmission performance is acceptable under full load. An engine speed that is lower than the
normal or an engine speed that is higher than the normal indicate engine problems or transmission
problems. When the performance of the engine is correct, but the stall speed is not correct, the problem is in
the converter or the problem is in the transmission.

The drive wheels must not turn during the stall test. Put the machine in position against a solid object that will
not move. Engage the parking brake. When tests are made, the service brakes must be applied.

1. Install the 9U-7400 Multitach Tool Group on the engine. The 9U-7400 Multitach Tool Group can
measure engine rpm by the use of the photo pickup and the reflective tape.

2. Start the engine. Make sure that the transmission oil is at normal operating temperature. The normal
operating temperature of the transmission oil is 82° to 93°C (180° to 200°F) for the 924H, 924Hz,
928H, and IT28H. The normal operating temperature of the transmission oil is 75° to 85°C (167° to
185°F) for the 930H and the IT30H.

3. Release the parking brake.

4. Apply the service brakes.

Note: To make sure that the transmission oil does not get too hot, do not keep the torque converter
in a full stall condition for more than 30 seconds. After the torque converter stalls, put the control in
NEUTRAL. Run the engine at 1200 to 1500 rpm in order to cool the oil.

5. Ensure that the override for the transmission neutralizer is enabled. The override for the
transmission neutralizer is enabled when the transmission neutralizer override switch is illuminated.

6. Put the transmission control lever in fourth speed FORWARD. Push down the accelerator pedal
completely. Allow the engine rpm to stabilize and take a reading from the tachometer.

7. The correct stall speed for the 924H and 924Hz is 2225 ± 125 rpm.

A stall speed that is low indicates that the engine performance is not correct. Wait at least two minutes with
the transmission in NEUTRAL before repeating the test.

fan speed from the hot test computer via the Cat data link. If a signal of the fan speed is not received, ET will
default to a manual calibration procedure.

Transmission Neutralization Setpoint - Adjust

The transmission neutralization setpoint determines the service brake pressure that is required to neutralize
the transmission. The amount of pressure in the service brake system is determined by the travel of the
pedal for the service brake. When the service brake is applied, the brake system pressure will rise. When the
pressure for the brake system reaches the "Minimum Neutralization Brake Pressure Setting", the
transmission will disengage. When the service brakes are released, the brake system pressure will
decrease. The maximum brake pressure that was applied is recorded by the Transmission ECM. The
"Maximum Neutralization Brake Pressure Setting" sets the maximum pressure that will be recorded by the
transmission ECM. The transmission will engage when the pressure for the brake system becomes 300 kPa
(44 psi) less than this maximum pressure.

This is an example: The pressure on a service brake pedal rises to 1500 kPa (220 psi). The "Minimum
Neutralization Brake Pressure Setting" is set at 900 kPa (131 psi). When the service brake pressure reaches
900 kPa (131 psi), the transmission will neutralize. The service brake pressure is sustained at 1500 kPa (220
psi). When the service brakes are released and the service brake pressure decreases to 1200 kPa (175 psi),
the transmission will engage. If the transmission neutralization setpoint is set at 600 kPa (87 psi) and the
service brake pressure reaches 1500 kPa (220 psi), the transmission will neutralize at 600 kPa (87 psi) and
the transmission will still engage at 1200 kPa (175 psi). If the "Maximum Neutralization Brake Pressure
Setting" is set at 4000 kPa (580 psi) and the service brake pressure reaches 4500 kPa (650 psi), the
transmission will engage at 3700 kPa (540 psi) rather than 4200 kPa (610 psi).

The upper limit of the programmable range for the "Minimum Neutralization Brake Pressure Setting" will vary.
The limit is based on the "Maximum Neutralization Brake Pressure Setting". The programmable range is
given in Table 2.

Testing the Brake Accumulators

This test checks the following components: the cut-in pressure, the cutout pressure, nitrogen precharge and
the pressure switch that indicates low oil pressure.

1. Stop the engine. Engage the parking brake. Depress the brake pedal repeatedly until there is no
brake oil pressure. Pause for two seconds between each of the applications.

2. Connect the Communication Adapter Tool to a laptop computer that is equipped with Catipillar
Electronic Technician (ET). Connect the Communication Adapter Tool to the data link connector.

Note: The brake system pressure must be monitored with ET.

3. Observe the pressure. Before you start the engine, the oil pressure should be 0 kPa (0 psi).

4. Start the engine. The oil pressure will increase to a maximum. Record this pressure. This is the
cutout pressure of the charging system for the brake accumulators. The correct cutout pressure
should be 15600 ± 900 kPa (2262.624 ± 88 psi).

5. Apply the service brakes repeatedly while the engine is running. Verify that the pressure drops
consistently. Record the point, when the pressure begins to increase quickly. This is the cut-in
pressure. The cut-in pressure should be 9400 ± 600 kPa (1362 ± 88 psi).

6. Stop the engine. After waiting 40 seconds, turn the engine start key to the ON position but do not
start the engine. The warning indicator for the brake system should illuminate for 3 seconds while the
dash panel cluster performs a start-up test. If any of the warning lights do not illuminate, the dash
panel cluster may need to be replaced.

7. Depress the brake pedal until the pressure gauge decreases to approximately 6900 kPa (1000 psi).
The warning light on the dash for the low brake oil pressure should illuminate. The minimum number
of brake applications for single disc brakes is 6. The minimum number of brake applications for dual
disc brakes is 4. If warning light does not illuminate, replace the pressure sensor.

8. Continue depressing the brake pedals after the warning light for low brake pressure illuminates.
Watch for a rapid decrease in the brake pressure. Record the pressure, when the pressure
decreases rapidly. This is the approximate nitrogen precharge pressure in the brake accumulator.
The proper precharge pressure of the accumulators is 3450 kPa (500 psi). If the nitrogen precharge
pressure is not within the specification, then go to the "Charging of the Brake Accumulators".

9. Remove all of the test equipment.
