SOP051 SPILL CONTAINMENT

Activity/Task: Cleaning up spills

Personal Protective Equipment Required:


Skin Protection: Apron
Eye or Face Protection: Safety glasses/face shield
Hand Protection: Gloves

Hazards/Risks: Exposure to hazardous chemicals

Procedure
• Erect signage or barricading around spill area. If not available, appoint a person to prevent
others from entering the hazard area.
• Collect equipment needed and put onto a clean surface.
• Put on any protective equipment needed as per the Safety Data Sheet. If necessary, wear
apron, face mask/eye shield and gloves. Respiratory protection, and protective boots may also
be required.
• Open a waste bag. Place in an upright, stable position.
• Spread absorbent material evenly over spill area. Allow 5 minutes for material to react with spill.
• Using the scraper and scoop pick up the substance and place into waste bag. Seal the bag
securely and place into a second waste bag. Do not touch the outside of the bag.
• Clean the spill area in accordance with the SDS, normally this includes rinsing with plenty of
water. Contain the spill by wiping from the outside towards the centre. Place the contaminated
cloth into the second waste bag.
• Using a second cloth clean the area with water. Then dispose of the cloth by placing it in the
second waste bag. Avoid cross contamination. Do not touch the outside of the bag.
• Wash gloves before removing other PPE. Remove PPE used and if disposable, place in the
second waste bag. If reusable, clean in accordance with the SDS or PPE manufacturer’s
instructions.
• Seal the bag securely then dispose of bag and wastewater in accordance with the SDS and
local government regulations.
