Researchers found that slime mold growth algorithms, which involve the formation of
optimized networks to connect food sources, could be used to improve computer and
communication networks. The slime mold forms veins that connect its main body to food
sources using the shortest possible routes, adapting to changes in the environment.
Researchers observed that the slime mold formed an optimized network resembling the
Tokyo railway system when oat flakes were arranged in the same pattern as cities around
Tokyo.
The researchers suggest that the biological networks of slime mold have undergone
evolutionary selection, resulting in balanced cost, efficiency, and resilience. They also note
that slime mold networks develop without centralized control and could provide scalable
solutions for growing networks.
