PHYS1111 General Physics I Mid-term Exam

Date: 26 Oct 2022 (Wed)
Time: 3:05 pm – 4:15 pm (1 hr 10 min)
§ Total scores: 90 marks
§ Answer ALL 5 questions
§ Take the free-fall acceleration near Earth’s surface, g = 9.8 m/s2
§ Show steps in calculations, and give numerical values correct to 3 significant figures, in SI units

1. Assume all surfaces to be frictionless; the pulley and the inextensible

cord are massless (See the figure on the right). Initially mass m1 was
held at rest so that it did not slide on mass M. Now a horizontal
force F is applied to M once m1 is released. Find this force F (in terms
m1, m2, M, and g) necessary to prevent any relative motion among
the three masses m1, m2, and M in the subsequent motion. [10 marks]

2. A construction worker stands in a 2.6-m-deep hole, 3.1 m from Edge

the edge of the hole (See the figure on the right). He tossed a
hammer (treated as a particle) to a companion outside the hole.
The hammer leaves his hand 1 m above the bottom of the hole
at an angle of 35°. (a) What’s the minimum initial speed it needs
to clear the edge of the hole? [10 marks] (b) Hence, find the
distance from the edge of the hole the hammer lands. [10 marks]

3. In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, an interplanetary ship is heading toward Jupiter. The living-
cum-working section of the ship is a large circular ring of radius 20 m that rotates in order to
simulate “one g”. How long does the section take to make one revolution? [10 marks]

4. A 15-kg block is attached to a very light horizontal spring

of force constant 500 N/m, and is resting on a frictionless
horizontal table (See the figure on the right). Suddenly it
is struck by a 3-kg stone travelling horizontally at 8 m/s
to the right, and consequently the stone rebounds at 2 m/s horizontally to the left. Find the
maximum distance that the block will compress the spring after the collision. Ignore the spring
force during the collision over a short time interval. [20 marks]

5. A 388-N wheel comes off a moving truck and rolls without

slipping along a highway. At the bottom of a straight hill it is
rotating at 23.4 rad/s (See the figure on the right). The radius of
the wheel is 0.567 m, and its moment of inertia about its rotation h
axis is 0.8 MR2. Friction does work on the wheel as it rolls up the
hill to a stop, a height h above the bottom of the hill; this work
has an absolute value of 3526 J. Calculate h. [30 marks]
