VISUAL IDENTITY MANUAL

LOGO | COLOURS | TYPEFACES
INTRO

This guidebook has been produced to assist in the correct application of the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) Visual Identity.
It is essential that the ALMA identity is used correctly and consistently. The guidelines set in this manual should be used at all times.
All the necessary identity material will be available at: http://www.almaobservatory.org/images/ALMA_brand_files.zip
The ALMA Visual Identity should be used, among others, in the following applications:

■■ Corporate Stationery
■■ Brochures / Newsletters
■■ Annual Reports
■■ Websites
■■ Press Releases
■■ Posters
■■ Exhibition Stands
■■ Promotional Material

All changes in the ALMA logo and/or Visual Identity, that are not in this manual, must be approved by the Integrated ALMA EPO
Team (IEPOT).

THE ALMA TYPEFACE — LETTERING AND SLOGAN

The guidelines for the ALMA lettering, full name and slogan are very strict and must be used at all times.

THE ALMA TYPEFACE

For the ALMA Visual Identity the chosen typefaces are the “Handel Gothic” and the “Miryad Pro” families, each having specific usages.
Handel Gothic is used in the logo and the slogan. It also may be used in titles, while Muryad Pro should be used for texts.
The typefaces used in the ALMA lettering, full name and slogan are not replaceable and, to prevent any alteration, they should be
used as images.

THE ALMA SECONDARY TYPEFACES

In the case of the web, there are specific typefaces designed to replace the ones used in the ALMA Visual Identity. It is very important to understand
that the following typefaces are only to be used on the web.
The typefaces that can be used are Open Sans and Verdana:

THE ALMA LOGO — LETTERING ARTICULATION

The articulation between the elements that compose the ALMA brand (the logo, the full ALMA name “Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array”
and the slogan “In Search of our Cosmic Origins”) is free. This means that they can be placed anywhere in the applications.
Nevertheless, the full ALMA name and/or the slogan should not be placed directly beside, above or below the logo. Instead, these
elements should be used to balance the page, website or other application.

THE ALMA LOGO — LETTERING ARTICULATION

EXCEPTION TO THE LETTERING ARTICULATION

The example of this page is the only exception in the articulation between the ALMA logo and full name. It must be respected all times.
If for some reason the ALMA's full name (only the name, not the slogan) needs to appear next to the logo, it should be as represented in the example
below.
The distance between logo and full name should be one of the units described in page 9 and the height of the text alignment must never be bigger
than 70% of the logo's height and not smaller than 40% of the logo's height.

ALMA Cycle 5
The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) will start the next cycle of observing (Cycle 5) in 2017. A Call for Proposals with detailed information on Cycle 5 will be issued in March 2017, with a deadline
for proposal submission in April 2017. This pre-announcement highlights aspects of the Cycle 5 proposal call that are needed to plan proposals.

ALMA Cycle 5 will start in early October 2017 and span 12 months. It is anticipated that 4000 hours of 12-m Array time will be available for successful observations of approved projects, and
3000 hours will be available on the Atacama Compact Array (ACA), also known as the Morita Array.

PROPOSAL TYPES
Cycle 5 will offer the same proposal types as in Cycle 4. Up to 600 hours of 12-m Array time and 450 hours of ACA stand-alone time will be allocated
to Large Programs. Only standard observing modes are permitted for Large Programs.
Regular Proposals may request up to 50 hours of 12-m Array time or up to 150 hours
of ACA stand-alone time. Proposals will be accepted for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations
with ALMA in Bands 3 and 6 (wavelengths 3 mm and 1.3 mm) in the continuum only.
In previous cycles, the typical Regular Proposal requested approximately 5 hours of 12-m Array
time. With the increasing number of hours available for science in Cycle 5, ALMA encourages ALMA VLBI observations will be made in concert with an existing VLBI network: the Global
