Summary of “The Lottery”
“The Lottery” is a short story about a small village of 300 residents taking part in the
annual lottery. The main purpose of the lottery is to choose someone to sacrifice, so
that the village can have a successful harvest. One of the residents, the protagonist, was
a confident woman named Mrs. Hutchinson. After one person from each family drew a
piece of paper, they opened it, and Mr. Hutchinson got the black dot, which means his
family got chosen and one of them will be this year’s sacrifice. All of the sudden Mrs.
Hutchinson began panicking and claimed that the drawing wasn’t fair and they need to
start over. When Mrs. Hutchinson drew the black dot, she was killed by her friends and
family.
