CERTIFICATE
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT Amitesh Patil,
STUDENT OF CLASS XII HAS SUCCESSFULLY
COMPLETED THE RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE
TOPIC "Preparation of MOHR'S SALT " UNDER
THE GUIDANCE OF MRS. Reena Harry
(Chemistry TEACHER). THIS PROJECT IS
ABSOLUTELY GENUINE .0AND DOES NOT
INDULGE IN PLAGIARISM OF ANY KIND. THE
REFERENCES TAKEN IN MAKING THIS PROJECT
HAVE BEEN DECLARED AT THE END OF THIS
PROJECT.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I feel proud to present my Investigatory project of
Chemistry on the topic “Preparation of Mohr's Salt By
Crystallization” which aims at Studying Mohr's Salt.
This project wouldn't be possible without the proper
guidance of Chemistry teacher Mrs. Reena Harry who
guided me throughout this project in every possible
manner and gave time to explain it. An investigatory
project involves various difficult lab experiments which
have to be carried out by the student to obtain the
observations and conclude the report on a meaningful
note. These experiments are very critical and in the
case of fallure, may result in disastrous consequences.
Thereby, I would like to thank both Mrs. Reena and Lab
Asst. Mr. Randhir Victor Sir for guiding me on a step by
step basis and ensuring that I completed all my
experiments with ease. Rigorous hard work has been
put in this project to ensure that it proves to be the
best on It's point. I hope that this project will prove to
be a breeding ground for the next generation of
students and will guide them in every possible manner.
A special thanks to all who helped me throughout this
project.

INTRODUCTION
Mohr's salt or ammonium ferrous sulphate
is the inorganic compound with the
formula (NH₄)₂Fe(SO₄)₂.6H₂O containing
two different cations Fe2+ and NH4+. It is
classified as a double salt of ferrous
sulphate and ammonium sulphate.
Theory And History
How Was Mohr Salt Discovered:
In the mid-1800s, Karl Friedrich Mohr was investigating the
use of iron as an indicator in redox titrations. During his
experiments, he sought a stable and soluble iron compound
that could serve as an effective indicator. Through a
meticulous process of combining ferrous sulphate (FeSO₄)
and ammonium sulphate (NH₄)₂SO₄), Mohr successfully
created a double salt that exhibited the desired properties.
It is a common laboratory reagent. Like the other ferrous
sulphate salts, ferrous ammonium sulphate dissolves in water
to give the aqua complex which has octahedral molecular
geometry. Mohr's salt has a molar mass of 392.21 g/mol.

Properties Of Mohr’s Salt:

Solubility: Mohr's salt is highly soluble in water, which makes
it convenient for preparing solutions for analytical and
laboratory purposes.
Crystal Structure: The compound crystallizes in the
monoclinic crystal system. The crystals often form pale green
colour.
Colour: Mohr's salt crystals are typically light green, and the
compound as a whole may appear pale green. The colour is
associated with the presence of ferrous ions.
Experiment
To Prepare Mohr’s Salt By Crystallization:
The formula for ferrous ammonium sulphate is
FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O. It is prepared by dissolving
equimolar mixture of hydrated ferrous sulphate
and ammonium sulphate in water containing a
little sulfuric acid. The solution is subjected to
crystallization, ferrous ammonium sulphate
separates out from the solution.

Materials Needed:
Conical flask, Tripod stand, Burner, Funnel, Watch
glass, Glass rod, Filter paper, Wire gauze, China
dish, Ferrous sulphate, Ammonium sulphate,
Dilute sulphuric acid

Procedure:
Take a clean 250 ML beaker, transfer 12 g FeSO4
and 6 g (NH₄)₂SO₄ crystals to it. Add 2-3 ml dilute
H₂S0₄ (to prevent hydrolysis)
in another beaker boil 50 ml H₂O for 5 minutes (to
expand air)
Add boiling hot H₂O to the content in small
quantities. Stir until salts have completely
dissolved.
On Filtering it with the help of a filter paper and
heat the filtrate in a china dish till it concentrate
to crystallization point
Place the china dish over the beaker full of cold
H₂O, cool it and collect the crystals.

Chemical Equation:
FeSO4 + (NH4)2SO4 + 6H2O → FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O

Observations:
Weight =
Colour = pale green
Precautions:
Allow slow cooling and do not disturb the
solution during cooling in order to get
good quality crystals.
During the process heating of the solution
should be done in a short time only.
Because prolonged heating forms ferric
ions along with ferrous ammonium
sulfate.
Suppose if the solution is yellow instead of
green the experiment should be repeated.
Applications Of Mohr Salt
 Ferrous ammonium sulphate, the most
common and usually the least expensive,
contains 21 percent iron. Ferrous sulphate
is the quickest-acting material; it improves
turf colour within a couple of days, but
the improvement does not last long.
 Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate is in the
manufacture of iron blue; in the metal
industry as an ingredient of brass
colouring baths and iron plating solutions;
and as a substitute for ferrous sulphate in
a number of fields.
Health Hazards
Inhalation
Causes irritation to the respiratory tract symptoms may
include coughing, shortness of breath

Ingestion
Low toxicity in small quantities but larger dosages may
cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and black stool. Pink
urine discoloration is a strong indicator of iron
poisoning, Liver damage, coma and death from iron
poisoning has been recorded.

Skin contact
Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness
itching and pain

Eye contact
Causes irritation, redness and pain
Conclusion
In analytical chemistry, this salt is preferred
over other salts of ferrous sulphate for
titration purposes as it is much less prove to
oxidation by air to ferric or iron (III). The
oxidations of solutions of ferrous iron(II) is
very much dependent accurring much more
readily at high temperature and pH. The
ammonium ions. make solutions of Mohr's
salt slightly acidic, which slows this oxidation
process. It is also used to print in print edition
coating in order to extend the life of the word
version. Also it had been used in medicine,
electroplating and so on
