When you consume sugary or starchy foods, bacteria in the mouth break down these substances
and produce acids as byproducts. These acids can erode the enamel, leading to the formation of
cavities. Initially, tooth decay may start on the outer enamel layer, but if left untreated, it can
progress deeper into the tooth, affecting the dentin and, eventually, the pulp.
Regular dental hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, help remove plaque and bacteria
from the tooth surface, reducing the risk of tooth decay. Additionally, maintaining a balanced
diet and visiting the dentist for regular check-ups can contribute to overall oral health and
prevent the development of cavities.
