1. Scope
This specification is for electrical materials, equipment and systems that are furnished as part of
mechanical equipment or a packaged mechanical system.

Reference is made in this specification to the following documents. The latest issues, amendments, and

3. Definitions
For the purpose of understanding this specification, the following definition applies.
Engineered Equipment Specification. The document that defines an item or system of mechanical
equipment and scope of ancillary equipment, including the specific motor(s) and electrical systems
required for that application.

4. General
4.1 See the engineered equipment specification and commercial documents to determine the scope of
electrical work for the specific inquiry and contract.

4.2 The design, fabrication, performance and testing of the electrical materials, equipment and systems
shall meet all requirements of this specification, SES E02-G01 and the other electrical specifications or
data sheets referenced in this specification, or listed in the specific inquiry and contract.
4.3 Documents shall be provided in units conforming to SES Z01-G04, and shall be written in English
language.
4.4 Any conflict(s) between this specification, SES and industry standards, engineering drawings, and
contract documents shall be resolved at the discretion of SABIC.

5. Environmental Requirements
5.1 Site Conditions
5.1.1 Indoor Conditions
a. Temperature range: air-conditioned, 0 to 40 °C
b. Relative humidity: 10 to 100 percent
5.1.2 Outdoor Conditions
a. Ambient temperature range: 1 to 50 °C
b. Metallic surface temperatures reaching 75 °C due to solar radiation
c. Corrosive desert atmosphere with blowing sand and dust
5.1.3 Storage / Transport Conditions
a. Ambient temperature: 2 to 70 °C
b. Relative humidity range: 1 to 95 percent, non-condensing
5.2 Service Conditions
5.2.1 The engineered equipment specification shall indicate which portions of the system will be installed
outdoors and which portions indoors. However in all cases, the electrical systems and equipment shall be
capable of operating continuously in a 50 °C ambient.
5.2.2 The engineered equipment specification shall provide complete electrical area classification
information (Class, Division, Group and T Code) for the plot location(s) where the equipment will be
installed. Electrical equipment and systems shall conform to NFPA 70, Articles 500 and 501 for all aspects
of the area classification.

6. Power Supply
6.1 Unless otherwise shown in the one line diagram, the available voltages shall be as listed below. The
voltage rating(s) for electrical equipment shall be selected in accordance with the guidelines in this section.
a. 120 V, single phase, 60 Hz, solidly grounded
b. 120/208 V, 3 phase, 60 Hz, solidly grounded
c. 480 V, 3 phase, 60 Hz, high-resistance grounded or solidly grounded
d. 4.16 kV, 3 phase, 60 Hz, low-resistance grounded
e. 13.8 kV, 3 phase, 60 Hz, low-resistance grounded
6.2 Motor voltage ratings shall be as follows:
a. Below 0.375 kW, 120 V, 1 phase. See 6.3.
b. 0.375 kW to 185 kW, 480 V, 3 phase
c. Above 185 kW to 3750 kW, 4.16 kV, 3 phase
d. Above 3750 kW 13.8 kV, 3 phase

6.3 All essential process drive motors shall be rated 460 V, 3 phase even if smaller than 0.375 kW.
6.4 Electric heating elements rated over 2 kW shall be rated for use on a 480 V supply system.
6.5 SABIC shall provide one feeder to a single point on the skid. The feeder shall be at the highest voltage
level required by the on-skid equipment, and shall be from those levels listed in 6.1. The vendor shall
provide all transformation, motor starters, contactors, circuit breakers and controllers required to distribute
and control the power to the loads.
6.6 Unless otherwise indicated in the purchase order equipment shall be suitable for use on systems
having the following short circuit capacity (rms symmetrical):
a. 120 V system 10 kA (1 phase)
b. 208 V system 18 kA (3 phase)
c. 480 V system 42 kA
d. 4.16 kV system 31.5 kA
e. 13.8 kV system 20 kA

7. Design Requirements
7.1 Electrical Area Classification
7.1.1 Wiring methods shall conform to NFPA 70 for the stated electrical area classification. All equipment,
material and installation shall conform to SES E02-E02.
7.1.2 As an alternative, in hazardous areas, air purged panels may be provided in accordance with
NFPA 496 and SES X02-E05, subject to SABIC’s approval. Where air purging is used, SABIC will supply
instrument air. Vendor shall furnish all devices necessary to control the air, and a pressure switch with
contacts for alarm or shutdown, or both, on air failure.
7.2 Motors
7.2.1 Motors less than 150 kW shall comply with SES E06-S01.
7.2.2 Induction motors 185 kW and larger shall comply with SES E06-S02.
7.2.3 Synchronous motors shall comply with SES E06-S03.
7.2.4 DC motors shall comply with SES E06-S04.
7.2.5 Explosion proof motors shall be used in Division 1 areas and for fractional horsepower single-phase
motors installed in Division 1 or 2 areas. It shall be ensured that the surface temperature of
general-purpose motors used in Division 2 areas does not exceed the auto ignition temperature (AIT) of
vapors that might be present.
7.3 Control
7.3.1 Vendor shall provide a complete stand alone control system for the mechanical equipment package,
or shall provide input/output devices only, and interface with control system furnished by SABIC. The
packaged equipment specification and purchase order shall define the vendor’s scope of work.
7.3.2 If used, local control panels shall conform to SES X01-S02. All instrumentation shall conform to
SES X01-S03. Low voltage motor starters shall conform to SES E09-S01 and medium voltage motor
starters shall meet the requirements of SES E09-S02.
7.3.3 Unless otherwise indicated, vendor shall furnish controllers for all motors, control stations with
start-stop pushbuttons or selector switches, pressure switches, limit switches, temperature switches and
all other input and output devices required for a complete and functional system.
7.3.4 Control logic shall be in accordance with flow and logic diagrams furnished by SABIC, or in
accordance with logic diagrams developed by vendor and approved by SABIC.

7.3.5 In general, control and alarm circuits should be designed to be fail-safe. Failure of the control system
shall trip the motor(s), rendering the equipment inoperative.
7.3.6 The minimum interface shall be:
a. Start signal - contact closure to close or allow closing of SABIC furnished starter or circuit breaker
b. Trip signal - one contact, open to stop for starter. One contact close to trip for breaker.
c. Alarm signal - one contact, open to alarm for abnormal condition detected by package control
system
7.4 Receptacles
7.4.1 Receptacles, when required, shall be in accordance with NEMA WD 6, NEMA PR 4, or UL 1010.
Unless otherwise specified or required because of the electrical area classification, 120 Vac receptacles
shall be NEMA type 5-20 R.
7.4.2 Receptacles shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70, Article 410 for wet locations, and receptacles
for 120 Vac shall be protected with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) circuit breaker.
7.4.3 All receptacles shall be standardized, to ensure that only one type of plug with the type and model
used at SABIC’s plant is required, and can be used with all receptacles installed within the plant. If
information as to type of receptacle is not provided by SABIC with the purchase order, vendor shall request
the information from SABIC.
7.5 Lighting
The engineered equipment specification or purchase order shall indicate if area lighting is required as a
part of the package. If lighting is required, it shall conform to SES E20-E01, E20-E02 and E20-E03.
7.6 Grounding and Bonding
7.6.1 A ground bus shall be installed on the skid. It shall have mechanical connectors suitable for 70 mm2
copper ground wires at each of two diagonal corners. All non-current carrying metal parts of electrical
equipment, for example motor frames, on the skid shall be connected to the ground bus by minimum
25 mm2 stranded insulated green copper wire.
7.6.2 Each conduit shall contain one equipment-grounding conductor, sized in accordance with NFPA 70,
Table 250-95. Conduit and fittings shall not be used as the equipment grounding means.
7.6.3 Package grounding shall conform to SES E11-S03.
7.7 Wiring Interface
7.7.1 SABIC will extend one power feeder to a junction box on the skid for all other loads in accordance
with 6.4.
7.7.2 All vendor’s wiring for remote (off skid) connection shall be connected to terminal blocks in junction
boxes for termination of SABIC’s wiring. SABIC’s wiring shall in no case terminate directly on the terminal
of, for example, control devices and sensors.
7.7.3 Wires that run to motor controllers shall be grouped at one set of terminal blocks to allow SABIC to
run a minimum number of conduits for the required wires. Each wire connected to a terminal block shall be
labeled at the terminal by means of heat shrink type labels.
7.7.4 Separate conduit systems and junction boxes shall be furnished for the following systems:
a. DC alarms
b. 4-20 mA signal
c. Thermocouples
d. 120 Vac control and power

7.8 Wiring Methods


7.8.1 General
All wiring shall meet the requirements of SES E21-G01, E22-C01, E23-C01 and E23-S01. All cable shall
meet the requirements of SES E22-S01 and E22-S02.
7.8.2 Conduit System
a. Wiring shall be installed in rigid galvanized steel conduit, using the proper electrical conduit
fittings. Pipe fittings shall not be acceptable in the conduit system. Minimum conduit size shall be
3/ inch.

b. Flexible conduit connections shall be used to avoid transmission of vibration from vibrating
equipment to the conduit system. It shall also be used to terminate periodically removable
connections, for example to motors, instruments, and thermocouples. Maximum length of explosion
proof flexible conduit connections, for example Crouse Hinds type ECLK or equivalent, shall be
460 mm. A bonding jumper shall be installed with all flexible conduit, regardless of the requirements
of NFPA 70.
c. Exposed conduit shall be run vertically, horizontally, or parallel to the structure. Conduit bodies
and junction boxes shall be accessible from platforms, ladders, and stairways, and shall be supported
independent of the conduit system. Whenever practical, horizontal conduits shall be sloped for
drainage. Conduit shall not be installed behind the ladder rungs or at platform levels in such a manner
as may cause false and insecure step. Drain breathers shall be installed at low point of vertical
conduit runs.
d. Conduit connections to junction boxes shall be made using insulated, watertight threaded hubs,
or factory threaded hubs. Conduits shall enter box from the sides or bottom.
7.8.3 Wiring
a. With the exception of thermocouple extension wires, conductors shall be stranded copper.
b. Wiring for 120 V and 480 V services shall be cross linked polyethylene, rated 600 V. Minimum
conductor size shall be 4 mm 2.
c. Wiring for instrumentation shall be twisted, shielded pair, or triad. Minimum conductor size shall
be 1 mm2. The cables shall be UL approved and type TC or type ITC.
d. Wires shall be tagged at both ends with heat shrink type wire tags according to the electrical
connection drawings.
e. Wires of voltage level 120 V and above shall be crimped in a self-insulated compression spade
lug, and terminated on screw type terminal blocks.
f. Wires of voltage levels below 120 V may be terminated in tubular clamp type terminal blocks.
g. Wiring shall be continuous, without splices from terminal to terminal.
7.9 Enclosures
Enclosures in indoor, nonhazardous areas shall be NEMA 12. Outdoor equipment in nonhazardous
(Unclassified) areas shall be NEMA 4X, cast iron, aluminum, or stainless steel, with breather and drain. In
hazardous (Classified) areas indoors, enclosures shall be NEMA 7 with breather and drain. In hazardous
(Classified) areas outdoors, enclosures shall be NEMA 7 and NEMA 4X with breather and drain. Threaded
and flanged surfaces shall have a suitable coating of silicone grease (Dow Corning No. 4 or equivalent)
applied to prevent corrosion.
7.10 Materials
7.10.1 Vendor shall supply only those materials listed on the Acceptable Materials List if such list is
included in the commercial documents. Materials other than those listed may be used only with specific
approval by SABIC.

7.10.2 All materials shall be new. Materials shall be UL listed and labeled, or if approved by SABIC, they
may be listed and labeled by another national testing organization.
7.10.3 Materials shall be used for their intended application, for example water pipe or pipe fittings shall
not be substituted for conduit and conduit fittings.

8. Nameplates
8.1 All electrical enclosures, equipment and devices, including operating handles, meters, control stations,
concealed limit switches, proximity switches, sensing elements and process control and alarm switches
shall be provided with nameplates.
8.2 Nameplates shall be machine-engraved, on laminated plastic (black letters on white background)
showing tag number, description and service. Letters shall be 4.8 mm high with a 3.2 mm line spacing. The
nameplates shall be attached with stainless steel self-tapping screws or rivets. All engravings shall be in
English.
8.3 Nameplates or labels warning of dangerous conditions, for example high voltage, shall be in English
and Arabic. Nameplate information shall be provided or approved by SABIC.

9. Test and Inspection


9.1 The electrical equipment shall be tested and inspected to verify compliance with this specification and
the standards referenced herein.
9.2 SABIC shall at all times have the right to inspect the work. Vendor shall keep SABIC informed of the
progress of the work. Vendor’s quality control records shall be kept complete and available for SABIC
review upon request.
9.3 A general inspection shall be conducted, to verify equipment dimensions, construction, materials,
connections, ratings and painting against final vendor drawings, SABIC specifications and data sheet(s).
9.4 Each circuit shall be given a continuity test to ensure that all meters, instruments and other devices are
correctly wired.
9.5 All of the equipment shall be given a full electrical test that determines circuit verification and sequence
of operation, to ensure satisfactory conditions.
9.6 An insulation resistance test shall be performed on all wiring, to measure insulation resistance by using
a test voltage of 1000 Vdc for 60 seconds on circuits rated 120 V and higher. A 500 Vdc megger shall be
used on low voltage circuits, except for instrument circuits.
9.7 A complete mechanical operational test shall be performed to verify satisfactory operation. The test
shall include checking operating mechanisms and interlock devices.
9.8 Vendor shall supply certified test reports for all tests.

10. Documentation
10.1 Drawings
10.1.1 Drawings and data shall be provided with the proposal and during the design and manufacturing
stage. SABIC will review and comment on all drawings and data submitted for design review until such time
as the final documents are reviewed without comment.
10.1.2 The following drawings and data shall be required for evaluation at the proposal stage:
a. Dimensional outline drawing showing the location of major electrical equipment, including
junction boxes, panel boards, and motors. Location and size of customer conduit connections to the
junction boxes shall be shown.
b. Elementary wiring diagrams for circuits
c. Detailed bill of material including name of manufacturer and catalog number of components

10.1.3 The following drawings and data shall be required for approval:
a. Re-submittal of all drawings and data listed in 10.1.2 above
b. Wiring and connection diagrams
10.1.4 The following documents shall be required:
a. Recommended spare parts list and pricing
b. Certified test reports
10.2 Operation and Maintenance Manual
10.2.1 Vendor shall produce an operation and maintenance manual, which shall become an integral part
of SABIC’s operation and maintenance manual for the project.
10.2.2 The manual shall include the following information:
a. Installation instructions including pre-operative inspections and functional check out, including all
protective functions
b. Operating instructions and troubleshooting charts with corrective recommendations

11. Preparation for Shipment


11.1 Whenever possible, electrical components shall be shipped mounted and wired on the skid. If the
overall skid is not provided weather proof packaging, any electrical items that might be damaged by
exposure to the elements shall be provided suitable protection.
11.2 Any items that have to be removed for shipment shall be suitably packed and crated to provide the
required protection during shipment and storage at the job site. The outside of packaging shall be clearly
and permanently marked to identify contents by SABIC equipment number, purchase order number, item
number and drawing reference.
