Hello!
My name is Bill Scott, and I will be teaching a fourth year business class at Simon Fraser
University. I have a unique opportunity that I hope will appeal to you and your organization.
As part of their course requirements, I have students work in teams with a social profit
organization such as yours. The purpose from the SFU perspective is for the students to work as
a team and write a paper on their experiences. To do so, I have chosen to have them work on a
research project that is of importance to an organization like yours.
This is an assignment that I have used on many occasions. The students’ feedback has been
extremely positive. For many, it is their first contact with the social profit sector, and it has given
them a perspective that is new to them as business students.
The organizations that have worked with my students over the years have virtually all given
positive reviews and applauded them for their creativity, ability to offer unique perspectives,
and make meaningful recommendations.
To give you an idea of the type of projects students have worked on, here is a small sampling of
work they have done in the past. Students have:
• offered suggestions for how to create better brand awareness;
• reviewed performance appraisal processes and suggested changes (many of the students
in this class are in the HR concentration);
• reviewed IT systems and made recommendations for streamlining security, allowing
access, and designing an Intranet; and
• completed an analysis of various special events going on in a community to recommend
timing for a fund raising event.
If you are interested, here’s what I require before January 15, 2024:
• a short description of the opportunity you have in mind (one paragraph will do);
• the name, email and phone number of a contact person. This contact person needs to be
available to students from late January through early April; and
• a link to a website that has information related to your organization’s history and
mandate.
As a class, the students will review the submissions and the teams will select one they
wish to work on. If your proposal is selected, the students will contact you. If not, I will
get in touch with you to let you know.
If you have any questions, please call me (604-574-1856) at your convenience.
Best regards,
Simon Fraser University BUS 272
