Gen Math Module 1
Gen Math Module 1
This module will allow you to explore the basic concepts of functions and look on
ways how to derive a function model for a real-life situation.
Through this module, you are expected to:
1. Define and illustrate relation and function.
2. Evaluate and solve functions using adopted word problems.
LET’S PREPARE!
At the end of this module, you are expected to represent and SOLVE A SET OF REAL-
LIFE SITUATIONS using functions. Be guided by the following information.

ACTIVITY 2. RELATION MATCHING
Complete each mapping diagram by drawing a line between corresponding
elements. From your viewpoint, determine the relation between the corresponding elements.
Write it inside the box. (See example below)

READING 1. RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
The set of first elements (x) in a relation is called Domain and the set of
second elements (y) is called Range.

NOTE: This relation is NOT a function since the first element “GERALD” is
paired to two or more elements.

Example 2:
If f(x) = x 2 − 5, evaluate f(−3).
Example 3:
Given the function f(x) = x 3 − 2x 2 + 6x − 8, evaluate f(3).
a. Substitute the value of x to the equation.
f(3) = x 3 − 2x 2 + 6x − 8
f(3) = (3)3 − 2(3)2 + 6(3) − 8
b. Perform the operations using GEMDAS
f(3) = 27 − 2(9) + 18 − 8
f(3) = 27 − 18 + 18 − 8
Therefore, f(3) = 19
Exercise 1. Based on examples above, evaluate the following function according to the
given condition. Show your complete solutions in the space provided on the next page.
1. Given f(x) = −4 − 5x, evaluate the following:
a. f(0)
b. f(−2)
2. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 − 1
a. f(1)
b. f(−3)
Example 2:
The function for the height of an object dropped from a 120-meter tall platform at x
seconds is approximated by f(x) = −5(x)2 + 120. What is the height of the object after 2
seconds?
a. The mathematical model or equation is given.
x = time in seconds
Exercise 1. Construct a mathematical model for the following real-life situations. Write
your answer inside the box below.
1. Jack started selling snacks in the nearby school. In a day, he spends ₱250.00 for rent
and ₱20.00 for each snack item he prepares. Express the situation as a function where
x represents the number of snacks and f(x) is his daily expenses.
2. An internet café has a flat rate of ₱12.00 for the first hour of surfing and playing. An
additional ₱5.00 is charged for every hour in excess afterwards. Express the situation as
function where x is the number of hours and 𝑓(𝑥) is the rental fee.
Exercise 2. Solve the following problems. Show your neat and complete solutions in the
box provided below.
1. Jack started selling snacks in the nearby school. In a day, he spends ₱250.00 for rent
and ₱20.00 for each snack item he prepares.
a. How much are his expenses if he prepares 50 snack items?
b. How much are his expenses if he prepares 200 snack items?
2. An internet café has a flat rate of ₱12.00 for the first hour of surfing and playing. An
additional ₱5.00 is charged for every hour in excess afterwards.
a. How much will you pay if you spent 7 hours in the internet café?
b. How much will you pay if you spend 1 hour each day for 7 days?
c. Which of the two (a or b) lets you spend less? Why?
a. Write a mathematical model from the given situation where x represents the
total distance traveled in kilometers,
b. How much will you pay when you reach your school which is 27 kilometers away
from your house?
