Introduction to Globalization

OBJECTIVES
1. Define globalization;
2. Illustrate how changing international trade patterns, foreign direct investment
flows, and the rise of new multinational corporations are reshaping the world
economy; and
3. Show how the process of globalization is giving rise to numerous opportunities
and challenges.

INTRODUCTION
Much has changed since time immemorial. Human beings have encountered many
changes over the last century especially in their social relationships and social structures.
Of these changes, one can say that globalization is a very important change, if not, the
“most important”. The reality and omnipresence of globalization makes us see ourselves
as part of what we refer to as the “global age”. The internet, for examples, allows a
person from the Philippines to know what is happening to the rest of the world simply by
browsing Google. The mass media also allows for connections among people,
communities, and countries all over the globe.

PRESENTATION OF THE CONTENT

1.1 Defining Globalization:

• “Changing the face of human societies, shattering cultures and social systems in
much the same way the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of transformed
Europe and its colonies 250 years ago.” -Prof. Randolf S. David, 2001
• “The process of world shrinkage, of distance getting shorter, things moving
closer… the increasing ease with which someday on one side of the world can
interact, to mutual benefit with somebody on the other side of the word.” (Larsson,
2001)

Why Globalization?
• Globalization as an intellectual topic is developing.
• Global structures and processes influence our everyday lives.

-Ourselves -Our country
-Our experiences -Our culture
-Our communities

1.2 Metaphors of Globalization:

What metaphors are you going to use in order to improve your own definition of
globalization? Enumerate at least three.

✔ SOLID/SOLIDITY
- barriers that prevent or make difficult movement of things.

✔ LIQUID/LIQUIDITY
- increasing ease of movement of people, things, info., and places in the
contemporary World.

✔ FLOWS
- movement of people, things, places, and information brought by the growing of
global imitations.

1.3 Origins and History of Globalization:

• Hardwired – it can be traced history: trade, missionary work, adventures, and
conquest.
• Cycles – globalization will soon disappear and appear.
• Epoch – these are also called “waves” and each has its own origin.
• Events – explaining the origin of globalization.
• Broader, More Recent Changes –

1.4 Globalization Theories:

• Homogeneity – refers to the increasing sameness in the world as cultural inputs,
economic factors, and political orientations of societies expand to create common
practices, same economies, and similar forms of government.
• Heterogeneity – refers to the differences because of either lasting differences or
of the hybrids or combinations of cultures that can be produced through the
different trans planetary processes.
