TITLE: SHIFT REGISTER
AIM: Design and Implement 4-bit Ring Counter/ Twisted ring Counter using shift registers
IC74LS95.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
 To learn about IC 7495 and its internal structure.
 To realize 4-bit Ring Counter/ Twisted ring Counter using shift registers IC74LS95.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED: IC7495, CDS, wires, Power supply.
IC PINOUT:
1) IC 7495:

THEORY:
Ring Counter:
The number of output states for a ring counter will always be equal to the number of flip
flops. So for a 4- bit ring counter the number of states is equal to 4. The working of ring counter
shows that the presetted ‘1’ shifts one bit per clock cycle and forms a ring. Hence the name is
ring counter. The operation of a four bit ring counter is summarized in given table.

Twisted Ring counter (Johnson’s counter)

There are eight distinct states of output. So the number of states of a Johnson’s counter is
twice the number of flip flop used. The operation of Johnson’s counter is summarized in given
table.

PROCEDURE:
1. Check all the components for their working.
2. Give biasing to the IC.
3. Make connections as shown in the diagram and observe output.

APPLICATIONS:
 Ring counters are used in those applications in which several operations are to be
sequentially controller. For example in resistance welding the operations called squeeze,
hold, weld and off are to be performed sequentially.
CONCLUSION:
Thus we have designed and implemented Ring Counter/ Twisted ring Counter using
universal shift register IC 74LS95.
